most books are better than the movies.....except for lord of the rings......SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS!

Sin Harvest
I liked how some scenes in the movies were better in the books and vise versa. Like the Witch-King and Gandalf was better in the movie. I liked how the Rohirrim charged the Mumakil in the movies instead of avoiding them due to their horses.

Are you talking about their confrontation in the film? I really didnt like it. Too quick and not expalined very well!

On the whole, the books are much much much better, but the films bring it to lofe for everybody to see, and so, have good points and bad points! But the films are still amazing!

That's not only a sad-opinion, but it is also worded horribly....stick out tongue

Just kidding.

But I prefer Tolkien's word to Jackson's, most definitely. smile

How can you make a decision w/out having finished reading the books? sad

Icicle
I have read the books many many times, and I have seen the movies many many times! I love both!

So let me get this straight,
you are judgeing something you have only read half of? confused

Sin Harvest
I read the books at least once a year. I mean I just love Lord of the Rings. I do say I like the books better but somethings in the movies are better then the books. Like in the movies no Tom Bombadill at all. Yeah! You have to admit that was the slowest chapter in any novel.

lotrtres3414
i love the movies the most but the only book i thought was pretty good was the third one cus it was a lot more exciting and didnt have a lot of just random talking.

So you think you can read half a book and be qualified to have an opinoin on if its good or not? you have got to be kidding. There are movie fans. And there are book fans. There are book fans that liked the movies, and there are movie fans that liked the book. But deep down, you're one of the other, and really no one's qualified to decide which is better. Everyone can think what they like about it. But at least read soemthing before you judge it, eh?

Random talking?? Because clearly a plot line is now defined as "random talking" Did you even PAY ATTENTION to what they were saying. Because if you like..actually read stuff closely, the story is really complicated and beautiful, not just a bunch of action sequences slung together and put on a film to make money. And there couldn't have even been a third book without all the setting up of the first two books.

Don't leave. You actually said some things that I couldn't have said better myself. Unlike half the crap coming out now a days that focus on a simple story the Lord of the Rings went in depth and made a very unique story with rich characters and places. Tolkien just didn't have Helm's Deep and then Minas Tirith and then the Black Gate and call it a day.

He put us in Middle-Earth. It felt as though you were among the Fellowship in the mines of Moria. Tolkien paints a picture in your mind on what is happening. The book is pure art. That's all I can call it. Art. Tolkien made something that just didn't make stuff up as he went alone. He worked on Middle-Earth his entire life to make the Lord of the Rings a story worth telling over and over and over again.

Most people complain about the book mainly because their reading level isn't high enough to really understand what is being said. All of Tolkien's works are like this. I can't put the book down once I get going. It draws you into the characters; each different with unique aspects and abilities and strengths and weaknesses.

I for one see Tolkien as an idol to help me be inspired to write creative things and to think outside the box. It was said that putting the Battle of Isengard as a flashback would be a bad choice but Tolkien did it and he made it work. Tolkien is the greatest author who has ever lived. His mind was full of creative thoughts that allowed him to create a world, language, and even a religion.

J.R.R. Tolkien is someone who gave us these gifts of Middle-Earth. And it all started with a Hobbit named Bilbo Baggins.

I have to give the Lord of the Rings:
thumbup
Two thumbs up.

Personally I was gutted that Jackson didnt include the confrontation between Gandalf and Saruman. The one where Gandalf snaps Sarumans staff and Saruman fless to the top of the tower. I dont remember exactly how it went but it was my fav part of the book. And because Saruman is my favourite character he could have used some more screen time.

Sin Harvest
Saruman rules. No doubt about that. What I loved about him in the book is that he used Treebeard's weakness so that he can become free. Treebeard hates to keep things in cages and Saruman used that to get free. Shame they killed him at the beginning of Return of the King and then they don't have him in the threater version.

Saruman was wise, smart, and powerful but in the end it was his desire to take the One Wing which led to his downfall like to many others.

Fëanor
well...i've never read the books, nor seen the movie. so my opinion on it is moot. but i will say...Narnia was big let down.

thefallen544
I believe the part you refer to about Sarumans staff being shattered is this passage:

'Behold, I am not Gandalf the Grey, whom you betrayed. I am Gandalf the White, who has returned from death. You have no colour now, and I cast you from the order and from the Council'
He raised his hand, and spoke slowly in a clear cold voice. 'Saurman, your staff is broken.' There was a crack, and the staff split asunder in Saurman's hand, and the head of it fell down at Gandalf's feet.'Go!' said Gandalf. With a cry Saurman fell back and crawled away.

With such writing I find it impossible not to love the books before the films everytime.

OhILuvHP
alright elessea-NO NEED TO BE RUDE ABOUT IT! just cuz you think its some sappy beautiful story doesnt mean everyone else thinks that-maybe lotrtres3414 just liked the action scenes-so dont go sayin mean things about OUR OPINIONS-and the reason I was compairing them is cuz i think the movies are WAY BETTER! y would i try to read the books when i think they are boring. so MY OPINION is that the MOVIES ARE BETTER THAN THE BOOKS! and if you dont like being here, then dont come

You would think so wouldnt you!! But it was a few years ago since I read the books. I just remeber that part for some reason and was looking forward to it in the movies.

excuse me-how do i have bad typing skills? um...no need to freak out over nothing-seriously. i like the movies and you like the books. we are two (like....TOTALLY) different people.....JUST LIKE YOU SAID! so if you cant say anything nice....PLEASE dont say anything AT ALL! i dont want to hear your snobby comments. thankyou very much! ~im out~

I wasn't being rude, i was pointing out a fact. You've seen the movies, yes? So you are completely justified in saying they're awesome, your favortie movies, the best movies ever, whatever. But if you haven't read the books you can't say they're BETTER than the book, simply because you don't know. You've never read them. That's all I was saying. You can't rightfully compare two things unless you've experience them both.

(And please try not to use slang. Proper English is greatly appreciated.)

lol laughing Going to read the books this year? I am, gonna start with the Silmarillion this timebig grin

OhILuvHP
OH! and you know what? i HAVE read a lord of the rings book. i read the HOBBIT! so there! dont go sayin mean stuff....ok?

lotrtres3414
hahah i love the hobbit!!! now there is a really good book writen by tolkien!!!

Elessea
But again. You can't compare things unless you've experianced both. If you read fellowship of the ring and watched it...then you could say which you thought was better. But if you've only done one, you don't know.

...I don't know why I bother.

OhILuvHP
seriously-why are you getting so worked up about it? i've seen all of the movies. i DID read the fellowship, but i got half-way through the book and they hadn't even made the fellowship-so maybe i need to read books before i see movies-i dont know-but DONT BOTHER if you dont want to cause I DONT WANT YOU TO BOTHER! JUST LEAVE IF YOU WANA BE SO MEAN ABOUT IT!!!!!!!!! seriously....i dont know why im bothering with YOU!

OhILuvHP
and lotrtres HAS experienced both-so she CAN say something about it. and if she likes the fighting more than the BEAUTY (w/e), then she can and you have absolutely NO RIGHT to say anything against that. so you can just leave if you wana be mean. and if you hate being here, then WHY do you keep coming back?

lotrtres3414
hhahaah why thankyou OHiluvHP!!

Elessea
Hahaha. The intelligance levels of some people amuse me.

I'm here because at one time this forum was awesome, and we had intelligant conversation and cool people. But they're mostly gone now. And I love Lord of the Rings, and I wish people could disagree civilly and have a discussion rather than get mad at each other because their opinions differ.

Its a DISCUSSION forum. Therefore you can discuss, which is all we're doing. No one's being mean. I just wanted to know your reasoning behind your opinion. If you're going to make a statement, back it up.

I just you can't read either or else you would have seen "Just kidding" meaning I WAS JOKING.

Leggy_n_Merry
I know this isn't my place to say OhILuvHP.. but why were you asking Elessea why she was getting so worked up? You're the one that's having a hissy fit. You're the one using capital letters and going off on one. As she said we're here to discuss Lord of the Rings, we're not here to argue. She is justified in what she is saying and she wasn't being mean about it; as she said she was simply stating a fact.

OhILuvHP
First-Sin Harvest, you didn't post that....did you? Cause if you did sorry-i thought it was Elessea (and I got mad cause I was already fired up about her)

Second of all, i WAS here to have a discussion, but then she got mad at me because i said that i liked the movies more than the books, and that i shouldnt be saying anything if i have only read half of the book. The reason i didnt finish the book is because they movies have much more action. but that is MY OPINION. and she got mad at me for that! and the fact that lotr tres said she liked the action parts in the book. she got mad for that!

Elessea
I wasn't mad at anyone. I'm sorry if I came across as "mad" you stated your opinion, I stated mine, thats what a discussion is.

we are allowed to disagree.

BlaxicanTroller
Also I would liek to say that is perfectly feasable to like the movies more than the bookes even if you didn't read the book. BEcause as he/she said he read some of the book .And if he couldn't stand the book so much that he couldn't even read the whole thing than he has the right to say he liked the books more.

Anyhoo... I like both equaly. Some of the books had really slwo parts in em, whiel the movie sped up somethings to much, and didn't show some really good stuff that was in the books, such as the scouring of the Shire.

OhILuvHP
ok-thankyou BlaxicanTroller!!!

anyways...elessea-so we have both stated our opinions-can we just get over that now?

Draugwen
Never seen a thread with that much shouting stick out tongue Must have missed a lot while I was away^^ Anyhow, I can't say I prefer either. Both are awesome, though both have their little flaws... it's something you can't really compare IMO smile

It is Quenya and means literally 'I wish that you have joy' smile ('you' being either plural or polite form wink Yes, I'm a language geek stick out tongue) I use that as a sig in most places, because I like others being happy wink
(know it doesn't fit too well with my pic^^')
Congrats... you're the first to ask in half a year of using this sig laughing out loud

I did not like the following things in the movie
1)Haldir would never leave the realm of lorien and its totally wrong that elrond sent them because haldir is under the command of galadriel and not elrond.
2)Actually instead of elves the rangers will come in the book, and it would have been more awesome.
3)No glorfindel in the movie
4)The scene where gimli was exhausted by the long run, actually dwarves are very strong and never get exhausted and are stronger than orcs in running.
5)No tom bombadil in the movie.
All right,I accept these are little things,it would have been difficult to portray all.But I can say the movie is awesome except the above things especially the balrog scenes.
I will vote for the book because there were unwanted scenes and many important scenes were not there.
