Alien was good; Aliens was bad.

How? Why?

Bicnarok
Because it was dark thus you saw very little, the imagination was sent on a scary ride because of the eiry atmosphere, it was original, and believable. The best of the Aien films was #1 imo. No fancy effects, just fear.

Alien was a very scary imaginative thriller movie.

I mean the NEW version of Dune from year 2000 - the old one SUCKS. The new one is good, but still not even close to the book, which is fantastic.

Ya Krunk'd Floo
My top 10:

1) Blade Runner - one of the best movies of all time.
2) The Matrix - When I first saw it, the time flew by. It was just so 'WOW'.
3) 2001 - No matter what genre Kubrick attempted, his movies were incredible.
4) Alien - scared the shit out of me.
5) 12 Monkeys - Great movie with a great cast and director.
6) Donnie Darko - I liked it before it was cool to like it, so that makes me cool.
7) The Abyss - I love the spooky atmosphere that pervades through this movie.
8) Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - the thing in the ear = cool.
9) Empire Strikes Back - I guess there should be at least one Star Wars.
10) The Fifth Element - A little camp, but all good.

Only the top 3 are set in stone, the others can float around here and there. Although, they're all great movies.

Movies like Dr.Strangelove, A Clockwork Orange, and Back To The Future are undoubtedly great movies, but I don't really think of them as 'Sci-Fi', so I haven't included them in my list.

Great choices!

Mine are worlds, or universes, rather than individual movies, as you will see (not really in order, but more or less)

1. The Matrix trilogy - especially the first two - the first one because it was so revolutionary, and the second one because I liked the action, especially seeing Trinity on a Ducati with a Juno Reactor soundtrack!
2. Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick - love the atmosphere of Pitch Black, love Vin Diesel's voice, great action and humour in Chronicles.
3. Alien vs Predator, Alien 1 and 2, Predator - these were the kind of movies I imagined when I was growing up reading everything I could find concerning science fiction.
4. Terminator 1 and 2 - classic 80's scifi movie, with a very decent 90's follow-up.
5. Men in Black 1 and 2 - great cast, great comedy, great dialogue.
6. I, Robot - finally, FINALLY Asimov is starting to get the attention he always deserved.
7. Armageddon - like Men in Black: a great movie, with a great cast and dammit, I still have to do everything in my power not to cry like a baby at the end.
8. Star Wars - the original trilogy, not the plastic bubblegum they made to cash in on the original franchise.
9 and 10. Bladerunner, Day after Tomorrow, Planet of the Apes, E.T., - take your pick!

High Priest
1) Matrix 1,2,3
2)Dark City

Well, fictional history... custome fiction... whatever. Certainly not sci-fi.

MightyCelestial
10. Terminator 2 - One of those rare exceptions when a sequel is better than the original.
James Cameron, you are a god.
However, I've got a question: What is it that inspired the future sentient computer-technology that takes over the Earth, to put out a line of mean-looking humanoid hunter-killer robots, only to program the entire series with an English language that is weighed down with a heavy-@ss Austrian accent?

9. Matrix: Reloaded - After this movie came out, could you feel it? Could you feel the idea & use of special effects in the entire sci-fi genre take a major step forward? I know I did.

8. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home - Great story, fun energy & for my money, the best of the ST series. Also, the interaction between the the crew members in this film is the most integrated. You can really get a sense of family that this group of people ( whom we've come to know after so many years) have grown into.

7. 2001: A Space Odyssey - The very 1st. incredibly realistic portrayal of a sci-fi story. Great visuals back when this stuff was incredible difficult to create ( without the help of computers). Also, a suspense thriller plotline that is masterfully & almost quietly delivered.
Plus, if you're not on drugs whilst viewing this film, by the time you get to the ending, you will you feel as though you are.

6. Equilibrium - Holee f#ck! Are you kiddin' me? The action sequences in this damn thing......whoa, dude.
Quite stunning & stylish to look at also.

5. Abyss (Director's Cut) - Close Encounters Of The Under-Water Kind. Personally, I think this is James Cameron's masterpiece, after Titanic. It's actually two stories in one. The alien storyline crossed over with the tension that builds with the crew & the SEAL team. And both plots are very well executed. This movie suffered from the edited version that Cameron was pressured into releasing, which is sad, because the uncut version is what truly reveals just how great this movie really is. IMO, at least.

4. E.T., The Extra-Terrestrial - There's nothing that I can add that to this film that hasn't already been said. Lemme just say, after several years of this movie collecting dust on my video collection, I watched it with my 6 yr. old niece a couple of months ago, & I'll be honest with you: I don't know which one of us left sitting there with more childlike awe & wonder on our faces.

3. The Empire Strikes Back - For the movie itself, again, what can I say that hasn't blah blah blah.
Instead, I'll just relay my opinion on the experience of this film.
This was back when movies would stay in theatres, not for weeks at a time, but for months.
I think that, on the majority, audiences today have been so desensitized from so-so blockbusters being released every other week-end, that they will never get 2 experience the feeling a big movie-event like Star Wars. The year of Empire was one of my fave summers ever as a kid. It was really cool knowing that I could hop on the city bus at any point during the season & go watch TESB. And every time that I did, the other audience members were just as excited 2 be seeing this film at the end of the summer as they were at the beginning. Every year that one of the 3 original films was released, you could not only feel the power of the "Force" within the air, but also, you could feel it in the air all season long.

2. Aliens - This movie has everything that I look forward to in a sci-fi adventure. Suspenseful action, solid story, distinct characters (with great chemistry) , great visuals, kick-@ss aliens, a turning plot-twist ( we all thought for sure, that Bishop couldn't be trusted), & of course, a catch-phrase that made the entire theatre roar (" Get away from her, you b#tch!"wink.

Mannnn....I wish I had acid for blood.

1. Close Encounters Of The 3rd. Kind - For me, the most realistic handling of a story of aliens ( inspiring films like Contact & Signs which tried admirably to emulate), that it made it almost believable for me that extra-terrestrials do exist. Also, it was done with such a sense of awe-inspiring hope & elegant beauty, that it almost made me wish that they did indeed exist( & maybe aliens do, but that's an entirely different website, altogether).

Mannnn....I wish a UFO would come down & fly me away into the limitless potential of space.
Sans anal-probes, of course.

lannfear
Top ten ...not in any order.....Star wars, Terminator,Alien, the day the Earth stood still, ForbiddenPlanet,Close encounters ,Pitch Black, the Omega man,Blade Runner, and mad max
cheers

9. Minority report (great film-making doesn't totally translate into a great film, but it's too technically prolific to ignore.
10. E.t. the extraterrestrial (classic spielberg)

I adore Pitch Black, and Casshern, love the films.

jaden101
yeah pitch black is superb but gets a bad rep because of the chronicles of riddick...shame really...Riddick is a great character and even the animated version is good

i love the style of Casshern...it's unashamedly an anti war film and gets a little bit existential at the end (which reminds me...eXistenZ was an awesome film) but i love it....oh...and the main bad guy looks like Dante from devil may cry laughing out loud

SnakeEyes
I can't seem to get a hold of Casshern anywhere. I guess I could order it online wink

Been wanting to see it for some time though.

MildPossession
It is not out in American then? I've got two editions, a gorgeous region 3, and then it was released in a steelbook edition here in the UK on two discs, so had to get it. The menu section is quite rubbish though for the steelbook.

My eyes watered at the end montage of the film first time I saw it. Don't mind the anti war stance or the existentialism at all.
