i know a lot of females who are into the qraphic novel. However most of them are more of the coffee shop type, not the internet forum type. I have an adendum for the topic; is it me or are qirls becominq frequently more attracted to nerd, qeek, non jock/frat type quy. I have noticed this to be popular occurence here at university. Is this just an isolated incidentl or unique to hiqher education, or is this a qlobal fad on the rise. I wanna hear from our females on this one.

imho, comic companies target the market that they know they will get the best results from, and typically that has been the adolescent boy catagory. Since the stories are written to attract the male in, it might just be viewed as a boy thing when girls are young and then it just falls out of their realm of experience.

Any experiance I have had introducing girls to comics has been fairly positive, my girlfriend enjoys them now smile

I'm just not sure a lot of books are written with the interests of girls in mind. This doesnt mean that they can't enjoy them, it just means that the Marvel's and DC's of the world know where their cake comes from. There are just some elements of the conflict, the body images and small things like that which have been specifically designed to attract males for profit.

It'd be nice to see girls get into books, but then, I'd also love to see comics break into a more diverse art. meh

Just be prepared when you suddenly become the goddess to the geek-community at whatever school you're at.

Back in the day, any girl who was apart from the "mainstream" (i.e. read comics, could talk about battlestar galactica, could beat us in video games or sports, etc.) was idolized by us fellow geeks.

...

Not that I was a complete dork in high school (I did play a fair amount of sports too) but I was always more at home amongst the hardcore dorks. wink

...

P.S. Comics are as valid an art-form as any other. Taken seriously, you should be able to slowly work past the embarassment and just enjoy it. I still get made fun of occasionally by friends for knowing who would win in a fight between, say, Thor and Quasar...but I have fun and that's the important part.

Hmm...

We have four comic shops in Dublin (the capital city), and the recent posts have surprised me, because I'd go in on a thursday morning (when we get our comics in ireland), and there'd be plenty of girls in any of the shops, and the majority would be there for themselves...

I don't see the problem with girls liking comics, hell, i'd love to hear their opinions on some of the comics i read...

Dynamic One
because i qo to school where there are two comic shops i see a nice spectrum of people. One closer to campus there are a couple more qirls that qo there, but that store sells qaminq equipment too. The other store has more townies an not many more qirls. But like if im outside chillin an readin my new issue a lot of qirls will come up to see what im readinq ask question or ask to read one. The whole thinq is weird cuz i know many a qirl who would read but there is the whole stiqma about comic books mostly with quys. I found out this one qirl was into comics on the last day of our poetry class she wrote a poem about a manqa character, i was surprised we had a whole conversation about it. she was so cute an such a nerd she went to anime conventions an played ddr. Buti susect there are a lot more qirls who like this stuff but wouldnt tell anyone.

Hi. Another lady's opinion.

First I'll tell you why I am into comics. I have an brother who is about 3 years older than me. Back when we were young I thought he was the coolest guy in the world and he loved comics. So if me and my sister wanted to hang out with him we would have to listen to him talk about comics, follow him to go buy comics, and read comics. Eventually after he grew his hair long and got really angsty we had started to like the comics more. We even snuck into his room (which he forbid us to do) to read the latest issues.

All this alternative's literature(plus nightly doses of Star Trek:TNG) turned me from doll and pony loving little girl to a Sci-Fi,Fantasy,anime,manga,cartoon, and comic book loving woman.

So why do I think so few females are into comics? Because they simply are not exposed to it when they are young.

So if any of you have little sisters or nieces or daughters do them and comic books a favor taking them down to your local comic shop and letting them pick out a comic like marvel age or Archie. Or just let them read yours.

Comic books are aw some and the love must be spread by those already infected. evil face

You know, that really is a great question. Why aren't more girls into comics? I guess really, when you think about it, it's the same reason that guys aren't into the OC, or Lugana Beach, or The Hills, or any of that other crap on TV. But seriously, I think it's awesome that you're really into comics. More power to you. I think more girls should be into comics! My girlfriend isn't into them, which is like her one major flaw (haha), but I'm planning on fixing that little issue, or at least trying to show her the good in comics.

I think this just all goes back to the G.I. Joe vs. Barbie debate. Girls like Barbie (not saying you did, but you get my point) and boys like G.I. Joe.

What I think can help a lot to get more girls interested in comics to show them just how romantic and love-triangle-esque even the most hardcore comic can be. I mean, look at X-Men. You've got the Emma/Scott/Jean/Wolverine thing going on there. If that doesn't scream drama, I don't know what does.

So, this is my idea, my friends. Show your girl-type-friends just how much drama and romance can be apart of comics, and just maybe we'll snag a few more girls into the lifestyle that all love so very very much.

We don't have comic books stores in The Bahamas, what we have are pharmacies and the occasional bookstore where they sell a few comics. Usually when I'm there I notice that comics are bought but I never see who buys them. I was at school (college campus) last semester and I had just come from the mall and had New Avengers 8 I think. I was surprised by the amountof girls of actually were interested in what I was reading. Next week I went in to pick up a Batman and lo and behold I recognized a girl who I had let see my comic. She was there picking up something for himself. Apparently since I didn't fit the mold of the traditional comic booker reader ('cept for my glass) she decided to pick up some books.

One a related note my best friend (who is also into comic books) and I were to the gym. We were working out and while I was benching while he was spotting me. I started to tire and then he mentioned that I gotta go on if I want a chest like Hawkman's. I replied that I just wanna work on my Nightwing physique (ok, I'm embelishing a tad here but its my story) when a guy next to use asked if we read comics. We told him yes and he was really surprised.

Seems like there are a lot of stigmas attached to reading comics for some reason and that could a be a reason why so many persons, especially girls just refuse to get involved. Once they realize that not only the stereotypical version of a geek reads comics they can get into it. My friend and I have introduced a variety of readers, alot of which are girls, into reading comics and I'm glad to see those past stigmas eliminated.

BTW, reading comics is the only really "nerdy" thing I do.

Nataku8188
Comics aren't just for the fat or frail. Look at C-Man, he's frickin' ripped like woah. Most comic readers are just your average joe, some are pathetic sacks of meat, like Digi, and some are conference champion wreslters.

I would have ot say that there is a bit of a stigma about comics and comic book readers, but it's not a pervasive one, it's one that is very easily overcome, at least in my experience.

In and amongst my group of friends I gained the reputation of being wildly knowledgable about comics, to the point where I've met friends of friends of friends who knew me as "that comics guy," and generally thought it was pretty cool. I gave an extensive speech about them in one of my classes which was very well recieved, in fact I ran out of time during the question and answer period. Because of the movies and pop culture these days, people do get genuinly interested in comic books when they're brought up, it seems.

As to girls reading comics, I've encountered only a few, but then again, the comic shop I frequent isn't the most universally friendly one there is, it's kind of dark and, while clean, has a goth/emo vibe to it that I have to constantly ignore if I want my weekly fix. However, I did my sister the favor of getting her into comics while she's young. She enjoys the Teen Titans and Justice League shows, so I got her some of the comics and she loves them. I wanted to get her some Marvel stuff, but she's a bit too intelligent for Marvel Age titles. At first I thought Young Avengers would work, but because of the Hulkling's and Wiccan's relationship, for now, I think it best she not read it. I don't have anything against it, I even wrote a letter, that I believe was published, to Young Avengers. I think their relationship is a good idea, but, and not to shelter her any, but at 9 years old, I don't think her first exposure to gay people and that part of our society should come from a comic book.

Those characters aren't gay though, having a percentage of homosexual characters means that comics are representing larger portions of the public.... i don't see any reason for not having gay characters

um, I highly doubt that'll happen in anything except a farce....and a tasteless farce at that. Most comics handle it well...the Authority is a great example. But if you're that worried about it, they probably aren't for you anyway.

I honestly don't think any nine year old should be reading comics with sexual references or graphic violence... imagine a nine year old reading, say for example, identity crisis...

"What is doctor light doing to sue dibny?"

I know its not the same as content referring to sexual preference of a character, its just an example...

i'd rather any nine year old reading comics does it to see their favourite hero beating the bad guys, not to see logan skewer spiderman, sexual assault or a character mulling over their sexuality...

I think its best to wait till they at least hit their teens...

Right...I agree. But that's more about what parents should allow their kids to read. It has nothing to do with what is acceptable for comics. Most comics shouldn't be read until kids are teens. Others, like the Authority for example (for both more violence than usual and sexual references) probably even a little later.

But it's the parents responsibility to monitor this stuff, not the comic companies' responsibility to neuter their comics so that its acceptable for everyone.

That's why we still have Archie out there and back issues.

My wife reads comic books but before she started dating me she never even considered them.

Then she met Nightwing. It's been a downhill slide for her since then. At first it was a task to get her to name every member of the FF but now she only gets confused when I start talking about Tombstone, Ulik, the Vanisher and any other fairly elusive villain. Pretty soon she'll be on par with my brother and I.

Oh! And my wife is hot. wink

Well you dunderhead! Have you ever heard those stories about guys in the West? YOu know. They go around claiming they're the fastest guns in the West and everyone wants to take a shot at them. You are a self proclaimed bully. If you go around saying you can take people on then someone is going to come shooting at you.

Me? I didn't hit a bully unless I had solid evidence against them. Then I let them know why I was going to hurt them, or humiliate them. Whatever works. Something tells me that you aren't really that bad a bully though. Even though you do rep Thanos.

I was only using the fastest gun illustration as a metaphor. You don't go around saying your the fastest gun in the West and you don't go around saying that you can beat up people on this forum (that I've noticed) but if you carry yourself or say that you can beat the people up at your school, grade or whatever then it's just the same as saying, "I'm the fastest gun in town." It's just that your town happens to be a school, grade....whatever.

The point is that you make yourself a target. That's why they hit you. They don't need a reason. You supply it by trying to belittle those around you.

Incidentally, how tall are you?

Any comics I buy for her I read first to determine if they're appropriate. As far as violence goes for most of it, you can find worse stuff on TV in shows aimed at kids and most of the stuff is no more violent or gory than the stuff in Harry Potter that she's read. People have died in that, Harry's nemesis is genuinly a not nice guy, etc.

And I didn't meant to turn this into a debate about sexuality in comics. Sexuality in all its forms should be present somewhere in comics as they strive to be representative of the world. I don't want her to be exposed to gay couples via Young Avengers. On the other hand, I didn't give her the issues of Teen Titans where Wonder Girl and Superboy had sex. Nor did I give her the recent issues with the bizarre Monsier Mallah and the Brain love fest.

Certainly, I could give her some older issues of Spider-Man except...whoa, they're not too kid friendly either. At her age, I was reading my father's old collection where Harry Osborne overdoses, Norman kills Gwen, etc. That's not really kid friendly either. I turned out okay, but could the same be said for every kid? If sometime later in life I have a son or daughter, I don't want them reading about drugs, murder, sex, etc. At some point they'll have to learn, because unfortunately, that's just life, but childhood is precious, and sometimes that stuff can make one grow up too fast.

It's a fine line to walk, I'm not saying my approach is the correct one, but I do the best I can, and given the material, sometime's that's difficult.

Wow. I really respect that and I know just where your coming from. I am really close with my mom's boss kids (we grew together). I'm older than them and they think of me as a big bro and I see them as my lil bro and sis. I look out for them the same way that you do for your little sister. Skinny, short, huge glasses, pokemon everything. Grade 9 though I got taller and more confident and spent most of that year kicking the ass of all the bullies that used to pick on me (I thank Monday night RAW for all those grapples and holds I used). Then grade 10-12 was just smooth sailing for me. I got taller, ditched the oversized glasses and developed a real smart ass personality. First year of college I started hitting the gym, second year I started boxing and now I'm pretty ripped (though I've been away from the gym for a few months).

When you really look at I've progressed like Spider-man. Sweet. Now all I need is a hot red-headed actress wife. I wonder what Lindsey Lohan is doing Friday big grin

I would have no problem with them knowing about it, it's just life, like I said above. However, I don't think a comic book is the correct place to first learn about such things. Kind of like parents that let their television be the baby sitter, they have no idea what their kids are seeing and learning about. I wouldn't completely censor a child, like I said there's a fine line, and it's tough to know exactly what to do.

For some reason this kind of reminds me of the Patton Oswalt bit about his favorite movie: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. His wife can't stand it because it's violent, but whenever he comes home she's watching CSI and Court TV specials about autopsies and gruesome crime scenes and he comments how that stuff is wildly more violent and disturbing than any Eastwood film. So who's right in that situation and what is worse? People getting shot, or seeing the aftermath?

You advocate education, a laudable cause, but education isn't tossing some kid a comic book, or a movie, or whatever it be, and hoping they don't turn out like "Cirt cobaine" . There should ever be a mentor and a pupil who both put in as much effort as the other. For my own children, I truly have no idea how I'll approach it, but for my sister, for now, this is how I'm doing it when I'm buying her some comics. As to sexuality, morals, ethics, life and death, and all things that life is composed of, well I'm leaving that to our parents for now. They did well enough for me.

O...M...G... Marry me!

Few things I must say first off...

I don't watch any of those shows...

To get your girl into it just joke around with it... ask questions like "Do you think I'd look beter in Supermans costume or Captin Americas?" or find out her favorite character and read outload from a comic when you're together... (Trust me if I had a boyfriend and he did that... I'd make love to him on the spot.)

I never liked Barbie. Her clothes yeah, but not the dolls them selves... My brother gave me two of his old GI Joes... still have em too. smile

laughing out loud Yeah love with violent powers. They should make a soap opra of that... Not that I'd watch it but hey...

I agree. If girls aren't into comics I only see two reasons why not...
a) they have no siblings/ older brothers
b)They're just a little slow on the rebound of realizing what is so great about comics. cause if they ask what is so great about spiderman? There's only one answer supplyed by Mary-Jane at the end of vol.13 of USM "Everything"

Last notes: (that last line really made me feel like a comic nerd. YES!)
For more on this PM me. I have a million and one ways to gfet your chic freinds into the glorious world of comics. smile

You should feel around downstairs to make sure your boys are alright, then lay off the estrogen pills.

Omg. Where'd they go?! Oh there they are, just a wee bit shrunken. Lol, seriously. I find that I like a few shows like that. I used to watch some Dawson's Creek and love me some OC and One Tree Hill.

I'm sorry. I think we have a misunderstanding.

Incidentally, how tall are you? im 5,9 to 5,10.

bigbran
youd be surprised to see me pushing around the people i do, and out punching the people i do.
but its not like im mean, just love to fight, in my school id be a bully, but lets say in LA or something, id just be an average kid. like a dont threaten people with there life, i dont beat somone up every day, or steal money.
our city is pretty calm, so you wouldnt see a bank robbery(ever), or someone getting killed. im just tougher than most, if not all the people in my grade.
