Which part of London is the dodgy part?
Like south, west, east, north?? ermm

Punkyhermy
hm...I'm not a Brit but I did encounter a gang of sorts just a block or so away from where Harrods in located. Freaked me out so much.

TOH

Where's Harrods? embarrasment

Lana
I would guess there's more than one, as London's damn big.

I've only really been in central London myself, so I don't know.

silver_tears
Lotta help you are stick out tongue

Lana
What can I say stick out tongue only other parts of London I was in I was just passing through on a train.

However, I did manage to successfully navigate the Underground through London by myself while running off of no sleep at all (and being severely jetlagged) big grin

silver_tears
Did you see graffitti and or old women being mugged? detective
I'd assume those were the dodgy bits....

Lana
Uhh, being as the Underground mainly runs underground....no, can't say I really did stick out tongue

However. If you're claustrophobic, don't go on a train about 4-5pm....

The one I'm refering to is at the heart of London...the name of the street escapes me at the moment.

Lana
I just realized that I don't think I know a single street name in London.

I know where stuff is by what tube station it's near.

AH I thought you meant regular train.

Same thing in Paris it's almost always packed.

Packed was an understatement.

I'm really claustrophobic and when I was in London this time, we were leaving early because it was so hot and sunny out that I got heatsick. I was on the verge of passing out before we even made it to the tube station, and then it was so crowded that once you were on, you couldn't move at all. If not for the fact that we only had to be on it for 2 stops I probably would have had a panic attack and fainted.

silver_tears
I hate when it's like that. And it's like that every morning down here during university days. Part of my decision to leave the city was that.

Case and point; I'm from England and I thought the worst part of London was East London, Hackney being the worst area by far. Poor performing schools, underfunded transport system, appaling pollution record, rife with crime, burglary figures almost 3 times the national average, robbery levels 8 times higher, there's even a street known locally as 'Murder Mile'.

I'm getting my info from other sources, these aren't facts I'm already aware of, but I had heard Hackney was terrible and in researching only a little I seem to have been proved right confused

Also, the 10 worst areas for unemployment in Britain are;

Hackney

Newham

Dundee City

Haringey

Middlesbrough

Southwark

South Tyneside

Tower Hamlets

Liverpool

Newcastle upon Tyne

Hackney comes out on top with 16.4 percent (14,000). Wow.

How did I know? As soon as I saw the thread title I knew it would have something to do with an "upmarket" store.

For the record: Harrods is overrated, but does have the occassional nice thing in it. I say this because I get stuff from there for free, due to contacts and due to being the man.

My area is the worst, statistically; South-East London. However, I can count on one finger the amount of times I've personally had any trouble.

-AC

silver_tears
Whoa a mixture of both icon5

And actually it had nothing to do with the store, it was in response to someone's post that said she's only ever been to Harrods and I was curious where it was located.

Alpha Centauri
Ironically, the parts where Harrods is located can be seen as quite an aesthetically displeasing place, but I go there all the time (West End).

It's where all the good stores are -- music, literature -- as well as general art and anything in between. You just have to know where those are, though.

-AC

Bloigen

silver_tears
Is there only one in London?

Bloigen
Only one Harrods store? Yes.

Alpha Centauri
Yeah, one main store. There may be other buildings that are part of the business, but there's one store.

-AC

silver_tears
So it's like a department store?

It sounds like the Galeries Lafayette in Paris, but there's several of those throughout the boroughs.

Alpha Centauri
Yeah, it's a department store.

Pharmacy/Chemist.

I know, I don't know either.

-AC

Bloigen
Boots is just a Pharmacy. There are loads around Britain.

silver_tears
Ah brilliant, thank you all big grin

Alpha Centauri
No, it's what I said. Hence their previous slogan of "Boots the Chemist".

-AC

silver_tears
What does a chemist do per se? hmm

Alpha Centauri
It's honestly more or less the same thing. The store itself sells various goods such as over-the-counter medicines and shit, soaps, bathroom stuff. There's also a pharmacy in every store, so you can get doctor's prescriptions there.

-AC

Bloigen

I usually just group Chemists as Pharmacies. But yes, it's a Chemist not a Pharmacy.

silver_tears
That is so cool eek!
I will one day have to visit this Boots...........and take a picture of the sign or slogan.

Alpha Centauri
What? Why? Haha.

Randomest thing I've ever heard. "Look, everyone. I saw this store in Britain.", "...".

-AC

silver_tears
Because it's called a chemist's duh.
We only have pharmacies and drug stores on our side of the pond *disgust*

Alpha Centauri
There's one minutes away from me, I'll take a pic next time I pass it if you so desire.
