too bad when you're 14 you don't know what you want. You can't be commited from 14 till the end of your life, especially when you live the states or in the UK. Thats like saying, "I love you so much" to the first boyfriend you ever had, when you never really loved them. You thought you did, but you don't even know what love is. I'm 14, and I'm definetly not getting married until I'm at least 24. Any earlier is ridiculous. Not every one pulls of a dumb Romeo and Juliet scenario.

silver_tears
Bullshit, I've read a story of this couple who have just celebrated their 80th anniversary, she was 14 when they married, he was 18.

Yea, and it's more like 38 percent, and going down, since fewer people are getting married nowadays. Nice try though.

That's nice and all, but that's still really rare.

haha, well from where I'm from its 50%. Plus, my parents are divorced. Are yours? It hurts. But you probably wouldn't care anyways.

Well, I've heard stories where people who are in their 30's married little 14 year olds. I'm not going to ask them how its going. I can understand if your religion entitles getting married at an early age, but for modern society, its not necessary. I'm not going to get married at such a young age, its ridiculous. Maybe first I'll learn what the real world is like, and take if from there. I recommend that for RaeRox.

In the US the divorce rate is about 50%, and you're much more likely to end up getting one if you're under 18 when you get married as opposed to if you're older.

I don't know anyone who got married at 14, but I can tell you a story of someone who got married at 19 and ended up getting a divorce.

I can somewhat agree. Who doesn't want to get married?

I've been wanting to have a baby lately, but I'm not going to just go out there and get pregnant. There's many responsibilities, just like how marriage would be. Everyone wants to be with someone around the end......but you're 14.....you have soooo much life to go through

thats ridiculous. I did a report on infidelity and divorces last year for my oral comm. class. I spent nearly everday for a month, because this was our final report, looking up information on divorce and infidelity statistics, and none of them gave out 0.38% for divorces. Thats ridiculous. That's the percentage of the population getting divorced in any one year, not the total percentage of marriages that end in divorce, which is right now about 50%

"3. PROJECTION/PREDICTION. This is the Census Bureau's often-cited "50%" rate, the proportion of marriages taking place right now that will eventually divorce, which has since been revised downward to roughly 43% by the National Center for Health Statistics but was moved back up to around 50% by the Census Bureau in 2002, with even more ifs ands and buts than usual. Most recently, according to the New York Times, it has been revised downward to just over 40%."

Just because they can't see eachother does not mean they won't be committed. It's the same as an online relationship. You can be committed to someone without them being in your presence daily.

I agree with Irene here, because even if you don't KNOW what love is, you can still FEEL love. And no matter how old, young, responsible, or mature you might be, you should still be able to recognize REAL love.

wait, whaaaat? online relationships.....where'd that come into play anyways?

I'd only see a reason for an online relationship if a couple was separated for a short period of time. Otherwise, just forget it.

14 thats INSANE in todays world that's begging for a divorce....................

I'm not saying anything about that.

But love doesn't always last...and if you're in love, why rush it and get married?

You claimed that you have to see eachother alot to be committed which I said is not true and brought up online relationships for an example.....

Precisely, and if you're willing to give it a try and you're willing to wait to get married after being engaged, then why hold back.

And I said that trying to have true committment while not able to be together is a good way to try and destroy your relationship...

The same could be said for men and women who go to war and leave their love ones behind.

Because as beautiful and grand as love is it normally doesn't run your entire life. It's a part of it certainly however it normally doesn't encompass ALL of it.

ah, well I'm done talking about marriage. I'm definetly not getting married at 14, or till I'm mature enough to take care of myself. I'm outta here, Rae needs to think about this long and hard.

Xirius
Whie I do think that fourteen is too young to be engaged, I think the topic is becomming confused.
How high the divorce rates may be doesn't affect how one marriage in particular will end.
No amount of statistics can ever be used to say what will happen in any particular case, only what already has happened in generalities.
For those who have been affected by divorce, Im sorry, but that really doesnt really have anything to do with this particular couple and it can't really be used to say "This happened to my parents, and they were older than you when they got married, so it has to happen to you"

Fourteen may be too young to get married, but I hope it isn't, I hope it works out for the best, and as I don't have any knowledge of the couple, I can't honestly predict what will happen. I advise caution before rushing in, but other than that, I do wish you all the best.

Hun, she didn't say she was getting married at 14, she's engaged at 14...She's most likely going to be smart about it and wait until she's out of school, like me!

Yeah. erm

There are many religions in which someone by her age is betrothed.

Soleran
Being engaged at 14 does what for you again? Most people at 14 haven't even established who they are. They are still being groomed by their parents (significantly.)

Being engaged at fourteen sets up some pretty serious roadblocks for normal teen (and adult) development, in my opinion.

Plus as I said, they can't until she's 16 anyway.

Which I highly doubt they would, if they had any sense.

ILoveMyDaniel
Alright, what I see here, is a mere confusion between engagement and marriage.
