Aside from probable changes in geneology, how else would European and world history be affected if the Mongols had completely conquered all of Europe? And does anyone think that the Europeans could stand up to the Mongols if they had the right guys in command, EG if England had King Richard and the other countries were commanded by the best guys they'd had in the Dark Ages before the time of the Mongol conquests (but nobody from ancient Rome or whatever). Or if Norway was still full of ferocious pagan Vikings (as tough as they ever were, like maybe like they were in the 9th century or so or whenever the height of the Viking Age was) and was led by whoever their toughest pre-Christian king was. Plus, also if that was the case and Europe was unified against the Mongols. Then could the Europeans have won?

Doubt it, the mongols wouldn't have conquered the whole of europe. However they proved capable of dealing with far superior armies than their own. Plus their tactics where so different from normal european medieval tactics

Mithlond
Yes, their strengths were in their horsemen, born from the Russian/Mongolian Steppes. I doubt they would have been as effective in the forests of Europe.

Fire
Good Point, hadden't looked at it like that.

Eh. If anything, Western Europe's mounted, Heavy armor wearing Knights would be the one at a disadvantage if they are going to fight the Mongols in a wooded terrain.

Besides, the Mongols have Subutai. He's all the Mongols neeed to win.

Mithlond
The actual number of mounted armoured knights in the armies of Europe were comparatively small.

What I meant by forests posing a problem for the Mongols was not that they would actually fight in forests; more that the numerous woods, hedgerows, etc, of Europe would prevent the Mongols having the wide open areas they were accustomed to, and under these restricted circumstances they would not be as effective.

Templares
Well the forests of Russia and Poland certainly wasnt a detriment to the Mongols.

Also, keep in mind that the mongols drank the blood of horses when food ran out, at least thats what most people believe.

Neither were the quality of their armed forces... When the Mongols came up against the first decent European army - the Austrians - they were defeated.

Don't forget the Mongols DID try and conquer Europe, and placed Vienna(?) under siege.

They didn't succeed.

I think the Mongols got greedy and overstretched.

penelope if you were alive during the time of the mongols, it would have been a high possibility that you would have been raped by them

Very true, and the fact Russia didn't have the forests of Germany or France.

Austria was invited to fight but did not join the hostilities. The Mongols primary target under Subutai was Hungary and Poland. It is in Austria's best interest to stay out of the fight, in fact the Duke of Austria imprisoned the King of Hungary after his forces was soundly beaten by the OUTNUMBERED Mongols and sold him for ransom.

The Mongols DID have plans to conquer Western Europe but after the death of Ogadai, it was abandoned.

IIRC, it was the Ottoman Turks who put Vienna to seige and failed.

I honestly think the Mongolians would take them.
