Just read it. I'm liking it so far.

I meant to pick this up but the dude in front of me got the last f*cking issue.

Very much looking forward to this mini series. Haven't picked up a copy yet but I will on the weekend.

Does Shazam have any weaknesses, Hes always been my favorite character from DC. I have always thought he would beat down Superman.

If thats what wiki says, it wont be long b4 its changed. It looks as though it was Edited by a rampant Fanboy. Plus Hercules braced the Earth, he hdidn't actually lift it. I've taken that from a quote from Dianna.

I wasn't gonna get this, but i may pick it up just for Porter's art. It's looking great.

Doesn't hurt that it's a decent first issue either.

Aside from the Pale White Skin and hair, I like the new Shazam outfit.

yes his power come from the egyptian panteon while the others come from the olmpians...shazam gave them a fraction of his power but adam got his from another source altogether..the same way adam gave power to Isis, who doesnt have anything to do with shazam even tho the talisman that contained the power was housed at the rock of eternity

Black Adam is never shown as stronger. Every direct confrontation has been a stalemate with at best a slight edge to either of them.

I don't know how long this will last, but it seems Billy's finally following the path Thor had to take several years ago; being the ruler/ taking charge, with all the power upgrade that comes with it, plus responsibility.

Shazam the Wizard bestowed his Champion, Captain Marvel with the portion of the powers of the gods themselves. He bartered with the Greek Pantheon and asked them to bestow some of their abilities upon his champion as his master did to him.

The Greek Gods gave via Zeus's Divine Lightening automaticially give a portion of their powers to Cap. Marvel when he states the word SHAZAM.

They clearly wouldn't give ALL their powers or they would be powerless.

Proof in case with Champion aka. Hercules when he was trying to seduce Diana. He would have bouts of weakness every so often. He later confessed the "Batson child" was taking some of his strength when he became Captain Marvel.

She's at he top disregarding cosmics like the New Gods or Green Lantern Corps .

In terms of raw strength and power, she's at the level of Superman, Orion and Despero.

She's frequently been described by other superheroes and Superman himself as "second to Superman".

That's pretty damn at the top.

Captain Marvel is at the top too. But WW's and CM's conflicting history makes it confusing.

In fact the whole, War of the Gods storyline was to clear up that mess. Which they didn't......

But they do have a few things right.....WW would be pawned by T'Challa in his vibranium suit with prep.
Thing is stronger than her(betterlooking too), and her entire existence is wasted as is.

Her whole point of existence, is being second to no man.
But in the ranks of DC, she will always be second fiddle to Superman.
She needs her own separate universe to thrive in.

And since Cap Marvel is always portrayed as the equal to Superman, she's now behind two men.
Add in Cap Marvels classic foil of Black Adam, and now she's behind three.

SHCers actually tend to think WW is well above The Thing in strength, and probably stronger than Wonder Man or J'onn. Positions I can't agree with, comparing fights against top tiers.

Mind you, I disagree with a LOT of what I see on this site's vs. board as well. But there are a few good posters at both places.

BTW, most of what a certain number of people there say about me and my arguments are either strawmans or out of context quotes. For instance, I never said Doomsday feared Darkseid because of "eyeknobs" and I've always maintained that the CM/Kalibak fight was even (with a slight CM edge at the end) Just FYI, before you start bringing that stuff up. They are pretty insane when it comes to finding ways to discredit Darkseid (or several other DC villains, in fact)


Back to the topic, sort of ... My stance on WW is that she's a high-end second tier, like Barda, Namor, Wonder Man, Iron Man, etc. She can hang with the top tiers, but is generally the underdog ... Despite her "second to" statements (and really, J'onn himself has some "equal to Superman" statements -- Captain Atom has even been called DC's #1 before)

The fact that WW tends to utilize her skill rather than slug it out with the top tiers, along with how Superman's dominated her physically (ditto a White Martian, ditto weakened CM in Underworld Unleashed, ditto Etrigan during War of The Gods) confirms IMO that her strength is probably slightly above The Thing, but below J'onn. Maybe equal to Namor, Barda, Powergirl, Captain Atom, or Wonder Man.

Read it and really enjoyed it! Great artwork and glad Zatana was in the first issue.

Agreed. He couldn't possibly match Superman with just a portion of their power. I always thought they gave him a magical duplicate of their power, so to speak. Like when Odin created a duplicate of mjolnir in stormbreaker, for Beta Ray Bill to possess. I don't think the Gods are without power while Billy is using theirs.
The only other explanation is the the Gods are even more freakingly powerful, and giving a portion is enough.

Yeah and i want to see how they actually pull that one off. We all know how the wonderful Greek/Roman difference was threated way back at DC.

It's been clearly stated in WOTG that Billy gets a portion of the power of the Gods. I think it's the fact that he can combined them (like Atlas and Hercules' strength combined) or amp them with "the power of Zeus" that allows for him to equal Superman.

Still haven't been to the comic shop recently, so I can't comment on this story.

King Marvel is the name Freddy used in Kingdom Come.

Just like I suspected! Billy was going to take over the Wizard's spot and made Freddy the future Captain Marvel. For all those skeptics out there that belittle Captain Marvel. This issue proves that Billy can handle yield such powerful magical forces. Great issue! I can't wait for #3.

Am I the only person that likes this series so far? I checked out the DC message board and a lot of people over there don't seem to like it. I was just curious what everyone else though.

I like it.

i think the majority of old Cap marvel fans don't like the direction the series is going in.. just not golden age enough.


that and they don't like Judd Winicks writing have had bad experiences with his previous work and won't give the new book a try no matter how good it may be.....

I like it too, actually thats my first buy for Capt. Marvel title, missed the 1st issue dough.. So far only 2 issues out right?

I'm liking it too, and it's also the first Captain Marvel book I've bought. Issue number 3 comes out this week.

I like it, Freddo's Badass and well it was only an amount of time before the Cap Marvel title went to someone else, hes the obvious and best choice IMO. I like the art aswell.

but i not sure whether this means that billy is going to have to sit out on fights i want him to be scouring earth rescuing people alosngide the justice league with his new improved powers rather than just sitting on the rock

i like it three, i hope it isnt all slow and droll like the rest of these magical tales are, but i also hope they dont rush him into saving the realm from some all powerful demon straight off the bat.. i wanna see him do something meaningful, but get a chance to explore his new powers b4 some ancient entity comes-a-calling..cuz after all you just know that he's gonna pass those tests

While waiting for the next issue....I was reading Jeff Smith's newest work on Captain Marvel. I like it! If you guys want to check it out is call Monster Society of Evil. Feels like a Year One miniseries.

I was thinking about picking that up but I wasn't sure.

I was never much into Smith's work. But after reading the issue...I admit..I'm now more curious about Bone.

Ive been liking the Trials. Wish they had made Solomon's trial longer, but I like it. The art is really growing on me as well.

I am also over 35, and remember the series vividly. Though I would probably look at it now as cheesy & cheap, it helped me really love the character to this day.

I once had a dream i was getting surrounded by creatures and i was stuck on top of a car and it looked like hundreds were surrounding me,when i screamed SHAZAM i turned into Captain Marvel and then i kicked butt before i woke up

Definetly cheesey and cheap,but it did make me have a love for the character also,at certain ages alot of stuff looks awesome

He mentioned the power boost in 52 to Black Adam. He said that with Shazams power his powers are amped by a 100 fold.

The story is great and the art is even better. I've read the comics at least 2 times each.

This gets better and better. This is some of the best story telling I've seen in awhile. Marvel is falling into disgrace, but DC is rising and getting better than they've been in awhile. Shazam, bitches.

I haven't been paying very good attention to this. And my dial-up makes me checking the scans a monstrous hassle. Could anyone give me a generalization of what's going on.

Worst example to try to use to prove DC>Marvel.

Go to Superman, or Batman under Dini, or Blue Beetle, or JSA.

TOS is stupid, mainly because they sidelined Billy, and Winick is adding angst where their previously was none needed.

Not to mention they just made the godly patronage more complicated, and yet more generic at the same time.

The Trials of Shazam is a great comic IMO but I am ready for Freddy to get his powers and find out in Countdown what's going to happen to Mary. I'm also ready to see Billy battle someone big like a full powered Darkseid.
