Um, not to crush your momentum, but some of these people have their own threads, and Surfer has a large one.

Try to keep it to one person...I'll leave this for a while to see how it'll do, but if you have enough for seperate threads, I'd suggest doing that or it will become needlessly vague and complex.

Very nice. I would like to contribute to this thread but I don't have a scanner. Perhaps someone could scan these in. I had two particular feats in mind, both of them coming from the Infinity War, respectively.

1. The Magus, using the power granted to him by using 5 cosmic cubes operating in unison, destroys Dr. Strange, Silver Surfer, Nova, Galactus' vessel, and Galactus himself with a touch of a button. The power is enough to destroy a star system, per the Magus. Galactus, however, reincorporates himself, his vessel, and everyone else. He essentially brought everyone back to life after being killed by the power of 5 cosmic cubes.

2. Later in the series, Magus and Adam Warlock are causing disruption in the reality flow in their combat for control of the Infinity Gauntlet. In their battle Warlock and Magus have lost control of reality because neither is in full control of the Gauntlet. As the Infinity Gauntlet proceeds to rend reality, Galactus, and Galactus alone, is able to act by summoning his vessel and extracating everyone from the immediate vicinity of the battle.

No, cows and pigs are not sentient. The only sentient beings currently known to science are humans (also various extinct species of protohumans like Cro - Magnons and Neanderthals).

Yes, the sentience debate is missing the point--one may or may not believe in a "soul", but everyone must believe in consciousness (experiential, cognitive, self-actualization... not that Marxist stuff). Almost all human beings experience consciousness in the same way. Most of us agree upon the terms of time that we have constructed. Seconds. Minutes. Hours. Days. Some might say that there are cultures that do not record time, which this true, but I think we can all agree that a minute in New York is just as long as a minute in a jungle in Sumatra.

Now then, animals, of course, such as cows, pigs, reptlies etc experience time much differently. Still however, they are sentient beings. For an animal like a snake, the temporal spectrum is much more compressed. In essence, their rate of experience is faster than ours--so fast there is little opportunity for a culture to grow. If the present is always a moving train and we're all passengers, then for a cobra, that train is traveling much faster, and there's not enough time for it to sit down in the dining car and think about its situation. Too many other concerns.

But while a cobra might not be self-aware in the same way I am, we are both capable of making decisions in our lives (sentience); I just have the privilege (or course) of having more things to decide on. When the decisions aren't so easy, that's when I start thinking... and typing panegyrics like this. I have the time to reflect, a prairie dog does not.

I know that I exist, some primates display self-actualizing behaviors as well, and we usually think of "animals" as sentient--but do you remember when you were in utero? I doubt it. It wasn't that you didn't have the ability to remember--that ability just wasn't developed yet. You were in a different level of awareness, and you were sentient though. You weren't conscious of it to your current degree, you were just a seed that had not sprouted. Dare I say, if your "life" ended then, it wouldn't concern you now. To go further off into it, spiritually some agree that when we die, we transcend this 'human consciousness experience' we are currently having now--as a culture, as human- we would still be 'evolving' our actualization in heaven or our afterlife. Much like the progression of going from the womb to adulthood. Research is going on to ensure not merely the advancement of science, but the furtherance of knowledge of human experience as well.

That, and such research could prove fruitful in developing penile extension devices so I can walk around like a horse, even if I can't experience the world like one.

Sentience is the ability to sense. It is separate from, and not dependent on aspects of consciousness. Whether your processes are instinctive or not, you're still sentient.

Sapience would be the better term that you're talking about. As in making judgments and all that. Humans are Sapient, bacteria isn't. look up Metacognition.

To topple Galactus is a great feat yes but his magical attack was only focused on topple him and nothing els, and he had to use all his powers to do so, later in that same issue Strange is very scared by Galactus saying that he would have found it amusing to see how long strange would have persisted Galactus wish to help him. So do you really think that Galactus couldn't if he wanted to have stopped ore just remain standing if he wished it to be so?

Maybe I should point out that Galactus attack previously triggered a point 4,7 on the richtar scale possibly the smallest amount of energy that he wished to use.
