Rogue Jedi
I think they are terrible gift ideas. it says to me "I didnt have time to shop, so here you go." mad

In Fate's Hands
well its a good idea if u dont know wut to get the person or if they dont know wut they want

Rogue Jedi
well, what if the purchaser knows the recipient well and knows everything they like?

then i dunno lol

Pssh, I love them. Rather then buying the person something that they want, give them a crappy/corny card with five bucks in it and at the bottom write, 'GET IT YERSELF!', and then go out and get what you know they wanted for yourself.

BackFire
They're wonderful gifts, they're practical and conveniant. I love when people get me gift cards.

tabby999
yeah, i think they're fine, i'd much rather an aunt or uncle get me a gift certificate than just guess and buy something. Would you rather get a voucher to HMV or a crappy cd by someone you dont like? Sure i know what i'd rather

ZOMG_Srsly
They are great!

Rogue Jedi
i just think they are impersonal, thats all.

ZOMG_Srsly
I can see where you are coming from, but they also allow someone to really get exactly what they want, too.

Rogue Jedi
thats a point i can concede to.

tabby999
and if its a card to a specialist shop it shows they pay some attention to what you like. It can be impersonal when they get you something like a Myer card, because its valid to so many shops that its a sure fire present, but if you go to the right place, its quite a nice present.

Piggle Humsy
I really love getting gift vouchers, as long as they are for a shop I use.
I like them because I can never spend money on myself buying dvd's, music, books etc as I usually feel like the money is better spent somewhere else and so it lets me buy stuff like that guilt free yes

I give Gift Vouchers> thumb up

big grin

Bicnarok
Nope, utter crap. Rather get a bottle of wine than a card

Good for everyone excepts best friends and girlfriends.

I think there a handy gift if your really struggling to get something for someone... ..

pr1983
I think the right card can be a great gift... anyone who's spent god knows how long trying to pick one out, finally finding the right one and seeing the reaction it gets knows how good they can be...

and i dont think they're impersonal at all, in fact they can be quite the opposite...

Strangelove
Gift cards are great from people who don't really know you, or don't know what to get you, but gift cards are inappropriate from close family (excluding siblings).

Lana
I love gift cards. My family usually gets me gift cards for Christmas/birthdays because when it comes to stuff like video games, CDs, and books, no one knows what I've got because I've got so many. It certainly beats getting something you've gotten already and having to return it.

I agree with that - if it's someone you know everything about then you'll be able to find something perfect for them, and even if you get it wrong they should be able to see the funny side because you're so close.

I love giftcards too, they're practical and as someone's already said, if you pay enough attention to the person (which you should if you know them well enough to be spending money on them) you'll be aware of where they like to shop.

I'm so fussy about clothes and things that I know it's easier for a lot of my friends to get me giftcards or give me money, I don't see it as impersonal and I'd rather they did that. It's easier on them and I'm more satisfied. A bottle of Bailey's always goes down a treat too big grin

Gift cards rule, easy to buy quick and always effective love getting them...

Far better to get money or whatever then to get a present you just want to throw in the trash...

Well they are called gift cards...

I like money. Gift Certificates are almost like money just with less options and no advantages....don't see the point.

Gift Cards are an inexpensive way to advertise. When you open the present at X-mas, Halloween, your B-day, or whatever the hell you want to celebrate, you got about 20 people seeing you spout out an infomercial for their business. When the recipient says, "I'm going to buy a blender from Wal-Mart!", now Wal-Mart has just provided a commercial for their blenders to a group of 20. Multiply that by everybody in the country opening up gift cards (tens of thousands), and you've got some serious face time off the clock.

But I like having gift cards for HMV because then I know I have to spend money there rather than on something else, so I know I'm definitely getting a DVD rather than wasting it on food or something.

As for gift cards rather than gifts.. I agree that if you don't know what to buy the person if you don't know them that well then they're perfect (although money is better really, unless they feel the same about what I said up there). But if you know the person well I suppose it is a bit impersonal, although I never know what to buy my friends so they usually give me a list of possible things to buy, rather than me buying them a gift card.

If anyone's up for getting me a gift card to the ABC Store this holiday season, I won't complain.

I don't know, I am one of those persons with free will, so in case I should prefer a DVD over food (and man I dig food..it like totally keeps me living) I'll buy one....if I have a gift certificate for a DVD Shop and really, really want a Burger I'm screwed.
