Just watched TESB tonight and something came into my head which I'd never thought about before - After Vader informed him of his parentage did Luke try to commit suicide by falling? Or did he know about the vents that would have saved him?

Rampant ox
Dunno. But if you watch the part when Luke was falling in slow motion you can see that he still has two arms. There is another piece of useless info for you. wink

lord_radar1
I think he was taking the lesser of two evils in his mind.
1. Whatever lay at the bottom of the pit.
or
2. Vader and his Emperor.

Well it was made by the best. big grin

Quinlan_Vos
I believe he was committing suicide instead of falling to the Dark Side and betraying the light.

coolmovies
No i think he new what was down there thats why he jumped .

I'll never join u !!

JaehSkywalker
he didn't jump... he released his hold on purpose! eek!

well, i think he knew what was down there so he jumped trying to escape the truth about vader... or to escape the dark side for the time being.... that kind of stuff...

coolmovies
If he joined that whould have been the end of the story

This is exactly right

Darth Subjekt
he knew because he was looking down in what i thought, was an attempt to see what was down there. If wanting to commit suicide, why hang on to the bars at the bottom? Ox, he didnt cut off his arm, just his hand.

Tangible God
Just how, pray tell was Luke able to study the schematics of Cloud City during his fight with Vader?

JaehSkywalker
Force?

Council#13
Well, he was sweating pretty badly. Maybe he 'slipped' shifty

or
2. Vader and his Emperor. Agreed.

allofyousuckkk
didnt he use the force to fall into the vents?(thats what wikipedia says)

so he must have known he wouldnt die

queeq
He didn't... he preferred to die.

allofyousuckkk
oh, ok

Alliance
The problem of course being that there are no bottomless pits in enclosed structures.

queeq
But you can hit your head rather painfully upon landing.

coolmovies
Before he jumped he had a good look down . If he didnt use the force then he must be a very lucky boy

General G
Too lucky I would say.

Tangible God
He expected to die, which to him was the preferable option rather than joining Vader. Either luck or the Force allowed him to live.

queeq
Or both.

Darth243
Maybe Vader used the force to keep him from smacking in the floor....

Tangible God
Sure.......

queeq
Nah...

coolmovies
He chopped his hand off

queeq
Exactly.

coolmovies
The vents are very big so it was easy lolz

queeq
True, and maybe they had some strong suction at the bottom as well..

Tangible God
I doubt Luke knew that.

queeq
He didn't.

Sesse
Nah.

Obi Wan fell some good 30 meters in Episode 1 landing on his shoulder.
Anakin fell some >1000 meters landing on a speeder in Episode 2.
Yoda fell from the senate pod to the "middle pod" landing on his back.
From there he fell down to ground falling on his head and doing some sommersaults.

So I dont really think it would have mattered what was down there. Star Wars universe works with physics of the original Doom, You just cant die from falling.

Tangible God
Those laws of physics mellowed by the time of the OT, since they relied on the Light Side to work.

queeq
Physics??? This is SW peeps...

What 30 meters was that in EpI?

Sesse

More like 10 meters on a second thought but not a bit less leathal.

queeq
It is less lethal for a Jedi.
