This wont go down well but we have 4 Bollywood screens in my local multiplex..this means Indie movies and Horror flicks such as SLITHER or THE NOTORIOUS BETTIE PAGE (which was a critics fave getting no less than 4 stars in any review) not being screened and this pisses me off.
This aint racism but on the whole your avarage non indian cinema viewer ...me for example...aint going to see a Bollywood pic as from what ive seen they are not exactly on a par with Scorcese and revolve around a lot of singing and dancing and not much else
Whereas your indian and pakastani dudes can watch either.
So i lose out...whilst you get the best of both worlds.
Kind of a pisser aint it

So what's the latest bollywood movie you've seen?

vintageSW77
i wouldnt watch one
they arent my cup of tea
ive caught bits, seen movie show reports and read about them but they just seem like a lot of dated singing and dancing.

vintageSW77
Well i watched one last night on tv to see what all the fuss was about Prabhodh
it was a film called DHOOM and it was preposterous
it was cliched and everything about it was just WRONG
it was an action movie and it made your average Jean Claud Van Damme movie look like sophisticated entertainment.

Yer i saw that one, its a rip off of a hollywood movie called torque. erm

vintageSW77
well i tried dude

insomniak

vintageSW77
Ok well
i guess i lied about just seeing the one
i have often catched bits of (enough)Bollywood flicks over the years on late night Channel 4
im still not convinced

I still think that bollywood movies should be kept away from the multiplex near where i live
im not being racist here
they are pretty much only of interest to asians whereas cinema choice should be for all.
they..much like say an award winning Polish movie or a north Korean horror flick should be in a specialist cinema like the Cornerhouse where i finally got to see THE NOTORIOUS BP
but its all about dosh.....
And i know exactly Bollywood ticket sales are on the up whilst a lot of other ticket sales are down but i aint got time for that today...ill type it up tommorow.

I often wonder why empire,Total Film stay away from reviewing Bollywood flicks if they are so "popular"

vintageSW77
watched bits of another Bollywood flick on Channel4 last night
was worse than the other i saw
it was DIRE

bogen
someone appreciates indian movies ermm

vintageSW77

Your watching shit i've never heard of, any movie industry has bad movies, try one of the movies' that insomniak recommended.

vintageSW77
If Channel 4 are screening them i guess they are good representations of bollywood flicks
and on FILM 2006 they had a trailer to DHOOM 2 and i nearly died laughing at how bad it was
totally NAFF

First of all i dont know what the feck channel four is and you guessed wrong, if you wanna get to know a movie industry take advice from people who allready know it, but you've come to a conclusion that all bollywood movies are crap stop posting in this thread.

vintageSW77
im entitled to my opinion
they suck

and again a film that i want see - PANS LABYRINTH has been given the miss for 3 screenings of DHOOM2 and two other song and dance with added naffness wastes of celluloid at my local multiplex.
Its time that a seperate Bollywood cinema was built in my area as ive had enough of 5 star films missing out for crap like DHOOM

I recommend a favourite of mine called Anjeli, I think that's the right spelling, seem to get it wrong a lot. But anyway, it's a beautiful story and think it was one of the first Bollywood films to deal with mental illness.

I have no favorite, in fact, I was just wondering where to begin. I'll check out those that everyone's mentioned.

Imaginary
All the ones Prabhodh mentioned are well worth watching yes and I'm definitely not what you'd call a fan of Hindi movies, I only watch them if I have 3 hours to kill and got nothing better to do.

You're better off checking out movies from the late 90's/early 00's because the others are just stupid idiot people trying too hard to be white. Also, Lagaan is a good movie.

Its spelt 'anjali' and its an awesome movie. The original was made in Tamil (a Indian language), it was dubbed into telugu (another Indian language), but i'm not too sure if its been dubbed/remade into hindi (yes, another damn Indian language).

Ah cool, those movies are pretty good.

I agree, thats why i like Telugu movies more, they tend to be a bit more.... Indian.

Prabhodh
I just saw Janneman starring Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar, good movie. yes

I actually liked Salman's acting ermm

MildPossession
Why is a kiss in the movie Dhoom II coursing a lot of bother in India? haven't they kissed before in other Bollywood films... it's fine to dance around in short skirts and tops, showing of their bodies, but when it's a simple kiss... oh dear.

Anyway got Zinda, the Bollywood 'remake' of Oldboy, to watch tomorrow.

Imaginary
Prabhodh: Holy crap, amazing! I personally think Salman is a waste of space but eh... whatever floats your boat.

MildPossession: I'm guessing because Dhoom 2 has A-list actors in it... actually scratch that, that's happened plenty. I honestly have no idea messed

I watched Film 2006 the other night and a couple of Bollywood types were getting all smug about how Bollywood movies are making more money than Uk and American pics
Well im not surprised seeing as Pans Labrynth has disapeared after 1 week at my local arthouse cinema and Dhoom 2 is still showing on 3 screens at my multiplex.......that Dhoom looks like a big turd and this latest Amitab whatever blokes new movie looks equally woeful.

Imaginary
3 cinemas is a bit much, I agree, especially for stupid Dhoom... but really you aren't in much of a position to judge Bollywood as a whole until you've seen more than 2 or 3 movies.

vintageSW77
dude at the moment id say ive seen about 20 or so over the years
admittedly not all the way thru but ive had them on from time to time
our tv channel 4 in the uk always has seasons of bollywood
theres one running at the mo

Nope. This season of "bollywood firsts" on C4 was a selection of films from one production house (Yash Raj Films) as a tribute to Yash Chopra because of some honorary BAFTA membership he was awarded earlier this year.

Well, really it was the BBC that was "gloating". Bachchan was quite open about the fact that, on the international scale, Bollywood has a long way to go. He even said they had "failed miserably" when attempting Western cinema.

If "art" is what you want, I suggest you go out on a limb, keep an open mind, and check out some Rituparno Ghosh (Bengali), Maniratnam (Tamil/Hindi) or heck, even some Ram Gopal Varma gangster flicks. But I think I'm wasting my times, as well as yours, so yeah, why are you in this topic?

--~~~~--

I looooved Jaan-e-Mann and I generally can't stand the lead actors. I really wish it had done better and given Don more competition. It was such a sweet, funny film with so many hilarious self-referential jokes.

The cynical side of me says its a publicity stunt by YRF. Otherwise yeah, clearly the prosecutor hasn't seen an Emraan Hashmi film!

Yer i have the same feelings for Salman but Janneman was different and Akshay Kumar probably made it seem a little better.

Whats happened to Hrithik Roshan?.... haven't seen a movie of his for a while.

He made Krrish and Dhoom 2 this year which were huge hits. He's currently shooting for Ashutosh Gowarikor's "Jodha-Akbar" in Jaipur along with Aishwarya Rai; it'll probably release next Diwali.

Ahhh good ole Preity smile I remember we had to choreograph a dance to Jiya Jale in a week and we could only manage half the song because it was so damn long laughing out loud But Manisha Koirala is beautiful in that movie.

Hmmm, I'm glad some good movies have been mentioned here.

Black ( while not original) is brilliant..... its great to see an indian movie without all the singing and stupid dancing all the time. The theme is gorgeous though.

Veer Zaara- yeah its an almost typical indian movie with singing, dancing. But Shah Ruhk Khan gave a great performance. ITs a touching movie, with music that stays in your mind and for the non-cynics , in your heart. ( the girl who played the lawyer in this movie, is also the deaf/blind girl in Black)

Water- an amazing movie about the plight of widows in India. GReat acting, great ideas. The director has two other movies ( Fire and Earth), can't wait to my hands on them.

Lagaan - is a great movie. Simple, powerful, beautiful. The scene where the village women pray for victory gives me goosepimples everytime i see it. The Bhajan( hindu prayer, in a melodious tune) can bring a tear to some eyes.

my faves
Khabie Kushie Kabhi Gham- kind of a typical indian movie. With three stupid songs that I just bypass all the time. A very touching movie, that never ceases to bring tears to my eye.
1942- A love story- an older movie, different story line. Simply the best songs ever . The main song tears me up since i reminds me of an uncle I lost some years ago. He and his wife used to love to sing it all the time. GREAT movie. A love story of a man and a woman and people and a country. In my opinion has one of the most romantic scenes in alll the movies I've ever seen.

BTW all those new movies like Dhoom 2 etc belong in a toilet.

Prabhodh
Hey all, haven't posted here for a while.... been busy with school and stuff.

I recently saw "Bheja fry" and "Traffic Signal", both excellent movies.

Bheja Fry is one of the funniest Indian movies I've seen in a long time. Vinay pathak acting was awesome.

Traffic signal is about the lives and travails of people living around a traffic signal in Mumbai. Its like the shortest Indian movie I've ever seen... lasts less than a hour and a half.

MildPossession
I watched Dhoom 2 last night... awful.

Yeah i didn't like it much either.

I saw "Shiva" last night, it was directed by Ram Gopal Varma and its about an honest police officer who takes on the Mumbai underworld.

Mohit Ahlamwat's (Shiva) acting was excellent.

They all ****ing suck and should stick to showing in your god damn country.
