You do realize that if they made income tax voluntary, absolutely no one would opt to pay income tax? Then the government would go bankrupt and the nation itself would collapse.

Yes income tax was only to be a tempory thing during WWII, I think it was.

Not true. The income tax was first instated in the 1890s but at the time only the very wealthiest individuals were taxed. At the time taxes were paid once a year. During WWII the government needed the money quicker so taxes were paid every quarter and it was the start of withholding that continues to this day.

Recent court decisions affirm the government does indeed have the right to impose personal income taxes.
