With Democrats now in control of the House of Representatives, Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi is in charge of naming Congressmen to chairmanships of the committees.
She promised to name them almost exclusively on seniority. However, she has made clear that for the Intelligence Committee, she would not name Jane Harman (D-CA), the ranking Democrat, to the committee.
But, the next most senior is Alcee Hastings, a black Congressman from Florida. Hastings was once a Federal District Judge until he was tried and impeached for bribery. Common sense says that she would move down once more to Silvestre Reyes (D-TX), a Hispanic. However, the Congressional Black Caucus is calling foul, saying they "will not tolerate his rejection."
It's just another example of blacks not caring about the fact that the person in question is corrupt, but more about the fact that he's black. Alcee Hastings is corrupt and should never have been elected to Congress in the first place.
