The most affecting scene of a dying characters last moment/words.

FistOfThe North
I say it that soldier in Saving Private Ryan that was shot on the steep hill while bleeding uncontrollably screaming for his mother as the other soldiers held tightly onto him and his wound and just just waited for him to just die.

The other soldiers just knelt and stood around by him while the doomed soldier was motionlessly hyperventilated staring at the sky for about 10 secs then he started to breath slowly and just stop. The scene was quiet and just focused on that part for a while. It was definitely the most dramatic scene of a character dying. It captured the essence of actual death in combat.

Good job, Spielberg.

dirkdirden
I like in American History X when he makes the guy bite the curb and you can hear his teeth on the curb then he stomps on his head, and when the other dude gets shot in the urinal.

Solo
When Cruise's father dies in Magnolia.

systemshock2
The Qui-gon death scene still gets me. It's very simple and yet still very impactful at the same time.

Also it's a very brief intercut in the Hulk movie, but after the Gamma bomb explodes on the Hulk and the Absorbing Man and the movie shows Bruce Banner floating in the lake, that quick flashback of the father and son saying goodnight really got to me too.

office jesus
I know I'm probably going to get railed for this, but Borimer's ( Spelling? ) death in The Fellowship of the Ring. That REALLY fckin' got to me. And I kinda' shed a tear over the T-800s 'death' in T2.

S-Ranger
Barnes death scene in platoon.

Erm Alexander when you think he think's he's dying in battle.

and Sam Bycke in The Assination of Richard Nixon after his death it's all over the new's and it shows how no one cares and how alone we all are.

when Katsumoto is dying in The Last Samurai and he takes one last look at the cherry blossoms and just manages to say "Perfect..."

Sadly, i still get affected by Mufasa's death scene

In The Abyss, when Bud and Lindsey are trapped in the Rover that is slowly filling up with water and they have to decide who is going to wear the scuba gear, and who is going to die. When Lindsey is drowning underwater in Bud's arms, and he can't do anything but watch his love die in front of him............ I get misty eyed just typing about it.

Haha it's true.

Ya Krunk'd Floo
Rutger Hauer's replicant's (Roy Batty) last words in Blade Runner are absolutely stunning. It's after a pursuit between him and Deckard that ends up on the roof of an old apartment building with the city's skyline in the background as the rain pours down. I honestly don't think there's a better 'last moment' example than this one:

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c-beams ... glitter in the dark near Tanhauser Gate. All those ... moments will be lost ... in time, like tears ... in rain. Time ... to die."

Great last moment from an amazing scene from a brilliant movie.

I'll say Boromir's death scene in Fellowship of the Ring also.

Impediment
Another for me would have to be Edward Norton and Edward Furlong in the final scene of American History X. Very emotional and grueling.

Lady Fianna
Not the most affecting perhaps but I can't think of any others right now. Totally unintentional that I'm picking two Russel Crowe movies here but Gladiator and the death of the young shipman at the end of Master and Commander.

Plus Mufasa of course stick out tongue

Quiero Mota
When Luke is holding a dying Vader in his arms in Return of the Jedi. When ever I see that scene, it's as powerful as when I first saw it in the movie theater in '83.

When that British guy got out-smarted by the raptors in Jurassic Park. "Clever girl" was a good last line for a doomed character.

Ultraman Baltan
"Peter, don't tell Harry."

Next time, read what I typed in context with what I replied to.

FistOfThe North
"The Chinese Connection" s/ Bruce Lee.

Towards the end, just after finally avenging his teacher, Bruce lets police arrest him and while he walks out of the building, with officers about him, he stops right outside front door of the school and stares emotionlessly at an infantry aiming rifles at him. He then yells out the top of him lungs and dashes toward the militia men and goes out in a blaze of glory.

He jumps into the air and the film pauses while he's mid-air and all you hear is a barrage of bullets with the honorable sounding score. Then the flick fades out.

Stealth Agent
The Boss in metal gear soldi 3 ey it just said scenes not movies. It was sad, it got to me, how she died for the country that betrayed her.

Mufasa!!! and the worst part was when simba was trying to get him to wakeup and lifted up his dead wait paw.

Gladiator he finnally got closure and his family.

Armegeddons pretty good, Carlitos way is decent, Mannys death from Scarface was sad, Katsumutos death in last samurai is poetic.

And ultimatley my own death will be the best.

i always liked the sacrifice to save others kind of deaths in movies
having said that i cant believe people rate Willis death in ARMAGEDDON though...everyone was laughing at the cinema i watched it at

that scene in troopers was, if possible, even more laughable. it affected my funny bone.

though it's not character death per se, the closing montage of annie hall always gets me teary eyed.

Ive forgotten the movie, but Steven Seagal died in about 10 minutes into the movie (Fell out of a plane) I was quite suprised seeing as his name was also i the stars list on the cover.

i agree 100% It's definitely gotta be one of the most emotional moments in the trilogy.

Nothing was more moving than that part. Where Obi Wan was just exhausted almost hyperventilating besides how awful and scared and disappointed he must've felt inside, during the duel with Anakin.

That scene was the only moment in the movie where my eyes welled up a bit a moment after hearing Obi Wan say it. It was like he was definitely sure he had failed Anakin, as if there was no doubt about it. Nodding his head assuredly while saying it, on top of saying it twice in a row. It was just like jeez. It was definitely a downer. They had the most profound friendship I've ever seen on film (over Samwise and Frodo, imo) only for it to turn into one of the most deadliest rivalries.

speaking of most affecting scene. anyone seen About Schmidt with Jack Nicholson? ...the part where he loses his wfie is quite sad..BUT the moment that brings tears to my eyes every time i watch that move is the ending where he sees the picture Ndugu has drawn for him and cries.Utterly touching stuff.A great movie.

It was quite boring actually. They both tried too hard. And I STILL can't believe you placed that over Frodo and Sam. You sir, have no judgment in character.

Oh and for me the green mile although there are others as well.

BackFire
The final scene in Requiem for a Dream. While the characters aren't technically dead, they've been systematically destroyed by the common foe of the film: addiction. The imaginary embrace between Harry and his mother, where they tell eachother they love eachother is among the most heart breaking, haunting and tragic moments I've ever experienced in a film.

Röland
William Wallace at the end of Braveheart.

FistOfThe North

I'm not sure about the last lines yet. BUt you guys should check out the death theme in the new film Elvis and Anabelle. The premis is a teenage mortician falls in love with a beauty queen who comes back to life. Sounds hokey, but the cinematography actually looks pretty cool and Max Minghella is playing Elvis (art school confidential was awesome!) Check out the website: elvisandanabelle .com

Coolhalvo
I was bored and went to the elvis and anabelle site. I was just going to check it out but I ended up spending alot of time there. I really like how we have an effect on the trailer. I really liked the death one. I kind of got an Edward Scissorhands feel and the acting talent seems just as spot on. If you have not checked it out, I would encourage it.

Also, Theoden's demise.

28 Days Later- The father of Hanna. He was so cool and I was actually suprised they killed him off.

The scene in Hidalgo where hes about to kill Hidalgo then they win the race.

The end of Gladiator.

The end of Star Wars Ep. 1- I LOVED MAUL DAMNIT.

The end of the Last Samurai.

Heath Ledger in the Patriot and also when one of the militiamen kills himself when seeing his son and wife killed by the Brits.

I like the concept of this thread, but then again it's going to spoil anything if anyone was wanting to see a movie listed in this thread. roll eyes (sarcastic)

Anyways, mine is for Ladder 49. I don't know his exact words, but Jack, the firefighter and main character was caught in the burning building and they couldn't get to him and he was just telling Mike Kennedy over the walkie-talkie to tell Linda that he loved her and to take care of the kids and stuff. I cried so hard.

And the other one was from Lord of the Rings, which I won't put spoilers around it because most everyone has read the books or seen the films. It's when Frodo is ready to sail into Valinor and he is going around to Sam, Merry, and Pippin and giving his goodbyes. That was really sad.

"City of Angels" The ending in that just pisses me off.
"What's eating Gilbert Grape" Terrific cast.
"Mask" You know what's going to happen, but it's sad nonetheless.

And last but definitley not least.

"Donnie Darko" The death scene brings the movie together, but still leaves you going WTF each time you watch it. Put this in my top 5 .

Many people are going to call me a pansy for this but The Goblet of Fire, when Cedric dies and his dad runs out like "THAT'S MY SON!!! THAT'S MY BOY!!!" Very moving. Any scene with a son or father dying and the son or father seeing affects me deeply.

Lester Burnham in American Beauty. Here's the quote from him, speaking sort of beyond the grave.

''I had always heard your entire life flashes in front of your eyes the second before you die. First of all, that one second isn't a second at all, it stretches on forever, like an ocean of time... For me, it was lying on my back at Boy Scout camp, watching falling stars... And yellow leaves, from the maple trees, that lined my street... Or my grandmother's hands, and the way her skin seemed like paper... And the first time I saw my cousin Tony's brand new Firebird... And Janie... And Janie... And... Carolyn. I guess I could be pretty pissed off about what happened to me... but it's hard to stay mad, when there's so much beauty in the world. Sometimes I feel like I'm seeing it all at once, and it's too much, my heart fills up like a balloon that's about to burst... And then I remember to relax, and stop trying to hold on to it, and then it flows through me like rain and I can't feel anything but gratitude for every single moment of my stupid little life... You have no idea what I'm talking about, I'm sure. But don't worry... you will someday.''
