So in biology class the other day, we were being lectured on the evolution of living species on this lovely world of ours. Fact of the matter is, the very first living things, bacteria for instance, did not adhere to the concept of death as we know it today They lived and produced more of themselves without experiencing the pleasures of sex if you will.

As time progressed and life took up complex and larger forms, the phenomenon of death had to introduce itself. Organisms that take up a lot of earths recources to survive had to die off to make room for their offsprings.

So essentially, when sexual reproduction started to become the dominant form of producing offsprings, it gave rise to the variety in species which in turn made earning a living on this planet a struggle.Which ushered in death that wiped out one generation to make room for the next.

Taking it all in, i ask of you is this: if you could choose between a life of potential immortality that lacks the existence of the concept of sex and the life cycle that we're now trapped in, one that flourishes on the basis of the act of sex but which is cut short due to natural progression, which one would you pick?

sex vs. immortality?

confused

MR.Grum

JaehSkywalker
have to take sex...

what fun is life without it?

ninja you guys are teaching me this

Eclipso
I'd take immortality, although we might not develop sex as an act of procreation I would assume that somewhere along the way we'd figure out how to do it for the sheer ripping joy of it all.

Reminded me of what Achilles said in Troy:

But I'd choose Immortality.

i love that theme of troy. but that applies because we are stuck in this life cycle. had we been asexual beings we may have had a different view of things.

That's true, the passions have always been at the center of many great accomplishments throughout mankind's history. However one could only speculate what might have changed had we not evolved into the creatures that we are. Granted, we'd probably still be great advocates of peace and justice (roll eyes (sarcastic) ), but it would be interested to wonder what life would be life as asexual dominant creature hmm

Lana
I'd think that immortality would eventually get boring; after a while it'd just be "been there, done that, bored now" and you'd get sick of living.

Plus sex is a hell of a lot of fun.

Vinny Valentine
Immortality would suck once the Sun was gone.

Röland
Immortality would be a drag.

Imagine living through century after century seeing all the same things, and having to watch your loved ones die off, that would be horrible. You would just replace the ones you lost and the cycle would start over again. I think that would take a massive toll on a person.

I choose sex.

SpadeKing
lets see hmm

immortality- I'd have to deal with a girl all day
sex- I could just bang her and go

I choose sex eek!

don't knock it before you tried it. wink

i don't think we are in any state to discuss the potential cons of immortality without ever truely being able to imagine it even.

Symmetric Chaos
Immortatliy as long as it come with eternal youth attatched because being trillions of years old and having a totally decrepid body would suck.

yes they do and then die really fast (I wonder if I could make an imortal bacterium)

Any fool who would choose immortality obviously hasn't had really good sex yet.

Penelope
I would choose the life cycle that we're now trapped in. For the simple fact that i just recently gave my virginity to my boyfriend, and we have been having sex regularly now, and i have discovered that sex is a very beautiful experiance between 2 people, its not just "mating". So to never be able to experiance such a beautiful thing. in my opinion, would be a loss.

Mr. Bacon
i would also choose sex and our current lifestyle, finding one person you truly care about with all youre heart and being with them. the limits of life cause us to act certain ways. Immortality almost seems cruel to have to face everything the world has to throw at us and it never ends.

i was reminded of lotr when i saw this thread

"i would rather have one lifetime with you than face all the ages of this world alone"

Penelope
If we were immortal, could you even imagine the amount of people who would want to commite sucide? It would be crazy.

how do we know what immortal life would be without ever tasting it?!

Penelope
Punky, thats a very good question, good point.

Röland

It would be horrible, in my opinion, I fear death but ultimately I know it's a part of life. If you're immortal you would have to come to like death because you would see so much of it. You would live through all the future wars and conflicts, you would have to watch your loved ones die, all the while knowing you had to face another lifetime of death. To me immortality is everlasting death.

Penelope
Roland, i thinks she also means that EVERYONE was immortal, so that would also mean that your relatives would still be living.

Now I feel like a dumbass. laughing out loud

I thought Punky only meant I was immortal. erm

Penelope
I bet overcrowding would be a *****.

manorastroman
anyone who finds the idea of immortality stimulating is either glib or remarkably easy to entertain.

bogen
Sex, everytime no expression

Vathu
Immortality.

Cause if we found out how to sex later.

We wouldn't die from AIDs.

Heh. I'm a genius.

Jack of Light
Err... immortality as in we can't die from natural causes? I'd probably take that, so I could live as long as I need to.

(Plus what Vathu said)

Vathu
Then there wouldn't be a pandemic.

And people would probably have fun jumping off of buildings and things..

Then Jackass would be SOO MUCH FUNNIER TO WATCH! =D

Jack of Light
Hold on... So people can't die AT ALL, or they just can't die from old age etc.?
