I always filed mine when I grew mine long, though I used to do them into points... Clipping was too inaccurate, and my nails grew so tough they didn't really work anymore. I broke the clipper.

Keeping thin at a certain length is okay. I'm not saying get an emery board and do them all the time just when needed
