rockycairns
out of these 10 films by Scorsese which do you think is the best

Röland
They are all excellent, but if I had to choose one, I would choose The Departed.

rockycairns
no The Departed wasnt as good as Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas and Casino it was a very good film definately his best since Casino but it didnt live up to his older efforts

Quiero Mota
Goodfellas.

manorastroman
taxi driver, goodfellas, raging bull, or the departed.

casino is very overrated.

ToMacco
Goodfellas

Solo
"The Departed" by a mile. Haven't seen "After Hours", though. "Goodfellas" is ridiculously overrated.

manorastroman
what's wrong with goodfellas?

The Core
"Goodfellas". It's very authentic. "Taxi Driver" can kiss my ass.

EPIIIBITES
I gurantee he's gonna win this year for the Departed. Pigs have flown!

Think Goodfellas might be the best, most complete film of the bunch though.

Ya Krunk'd Floo
Anyone who says The Departed is his best film is an idiot. Fact.

The answer is Goodfellas by a long way.

oddi
The Departed is pretty cool movie!

Kram3r
Raging Bull with Goodfellas coming in at a very close second.

bakerboy
A tie between taxi driver, ranging bull and goodfellas.

bakerboy
Where is the age of innocence? great film too.

MildPossession
Oh I hope he doesn't win for remake The Departed, good film but no.

Goodfellas for me, absolutely wonderful.

jgiant
Taxi driver, my favorite movie of all time.

BackFire
Taxi Driver.

Impediment
Goodfellas by a light year.

A very close second would be Raging Bull.

Dusty
Taxi Driver

sithsaber408
I voted Goodfellas, but I'm a little miffed that The Aviator wasn't included.

It comes in 2nd I think, an awesome bio-pic of Howard Hughes, directed in a way that made that period come alive.

Of course, I've yet to see The Departed, and my anticipation for it is very high!

Lord Coal
Taxi Driver's my all-time favourite, but it's still a tough choice when he's done so many other brilliant movies. Casino, GoodFellas and Raging Bull are all classics. Mean Streets could've been if it'd had a better ending.

I found Gangs of New York to be immensely overrated. The storyline was week, Di Caprio's an arse (Though he was excellent in Catch Me If You Can) and I thought Cameron Diaz was slightly miscast in that role.

Daniel Day Lewis was brilliant in it, though.

Myth
Tough choice. Its close between The Departed, Goodfellas, and Casino, but I chose Casino.

PVS
imho no contest: goodfellas

taxi driver in second
then casino and gangs of new york

vintageSW77
Goodfellas
Taxi driver
Mean Streets

Dusty
Just saw 'The Departed'.

New favorite Scorsese.

rockycairns
how come no one is sayin Casino that along with Goodfellas and Raging Bull is his best film

The Departed was ok but i guess i was expecting a bit too much with all the ghosts of these great films hanging over it it was good but didnt live up

The departed and goodfellas are my favs

The Core
I watched "The Departed" last night, and my comments'll be up in the thread soon.

sithsaber408
So did I.

Enjoyed the hell out of it.

After Goodfellas, it's my second fave Scorsese film.

The Core
In retrospect, I don't even feel as if a lot of these movies should even be included as "his" best movies ever. He didn't write most of his biggest successes, including "The Departed", "Taxi Driver", and "Raging Bull". He DID write "Goodfellas", and it's still my favorite. It just seems like he feels as if he needs to keep making gang movies until he gets it right, when he already did almost 20 years ago.,

rockycairns
he did strike gold with Raging Bull, Goodfellas and Casino

The Departed was good but i was expecting a bit too much

exanda kane
After seeing the Departed, I must say, Mark Wahlberg got the best part in that movie.

The Core
Classic overacting isn't Oscar worthy work.

manorastroman
tell it to pacino.

roughrider
Of the list - RAGING BULL.

Not on the list - THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST.

ragesRemorse
the departed was one of the most biggest let downs in my life. I love marty, but the departed was redundant and long. as you are watching the movie, you know exactly how its going to end, however marty put a remedy to this by killing everyone. goodfellas

I guess I'm an idiot. w00t

Goodfellas comes in second though, but it gets a little boring towards the end when Ray Liotta is on his coked out helicoptor chase thing.

Taxi Driver?

The Core
It was a 150 minute long cat and mouse game with gratuitous headshots that could have EASILY been done in 90 is what he's getting at.

wuTa
Boston's Police Academy must have one hell of a training facility. All of there cops are marksmen, and none of them were really aiming, except maybe Marky Mark.

jgiant
The Departed was a good movie, but put it against some of the other movies he has been nominated for and i think most of the others win. The Departed did not grab my attention, it was sort a blah for the most part for me. Don't get me wrong i really liked it, but i mean for scorsese and it being best picture it should have been better.

jgiant

I didn't mind the length of The Departed. I really got into the characters and the dialogue, it was highly entertaining. It was the type of movie I wish would never end.

MildPossession
That coked out helicoptor part is one of the best things in Goodfellas!

Some of the dialogue was dire imo, i was sitting there rolling my eyes quite a few times.

Scorsese film 'The Departed' wins best picture Oscar
US director Martin Scorsese's bloody crime drama The Departed has snatched the best picture Oscar.

SnakeEyes
Hmm, having just watched Raging Bull and Taxi Driver, this got a bit harder for me.

I might be one of the idiots who says The Departed however. I tend to agree with Tired Hiker on this one.

exanda kane
I find The Departed more watchable than some of his "greatest," nowadays. I find it much more accesible.

Still, the Colour of Money is underrated.

ragesRemorse
Goodfella's or gangs of new york for me

Darth Martin
Am I the only one that prefers Casino to Goodfellas?

By no means. On first viewing, I was a little disappointed by Goodfellas and enjoyed Casino more. Casino just gets a little dull second time around, in my opinion, whereas I enjoyed Goodfellas loads more when I rewatched and I'd certainly say it's the better film, and much more original, of course.

But Taxi Driver's easily my favourite. The character of Travis Bickle is so real, such a fantastic creation, though I think De Niro's best performance is in Raging Bull- a film that would be by no means great if not for that performance.

I'd also give an honorary mention to King of Comedy, which is rather fabulous. Probably my 3rd favourite Scorsese film after Taxi Driver and Goodfellas. The Departed would be well down the list, though I did really enjoy it, having watched it twice. Unfortunately, it's rather weak compared to Marty's other work, and considerably inferior to Infernal Affairs, too, which was shorter, better paced and had a much more interesting ending, too.

r0nm0n88
its hard to argue against any of these films, bit i would say good fellas, then taxi driver, then casino. I love my deniro

FistOfThe North
Goodfellas a.k.a. the best mob movie ever.

roughrider
I would have put The Last Temptation Of Christ on this list, and removed Cape Fear.

I'd agree. Cape Fear was fairly fun, but I thought it was rather crap, really.

Firstly I've been a huge fan of Scorcese since I can remember being a fan of anything , he was probably the first director that a really got into. Well I can't say what his "best" film is but I can tell you my favorite of all ; Taxi Driver.

I first saw Taxi Driver when I was about 9 or so, I'm 26 years old now. I remember watching the film then very well, and I remember wasn't able to understand a lot of the themes of the movie. One thing I did remember was the final shoot out scene. Seeing that as a kid, quite honestly changed my life. Sounds dumb, but I think that scene de-sensitized me towards movie violence -- and mildly traumtized me.

As said before, I saw this movie when I was about 9 or so and I probably watch it at least 1 once a year . Watching Taxi Driver now, I look at it in a different light, basically I've grown up with it. Still everytime I watch it, it holds my attention it has everything you can want in a movie really. I really can't say that about many other movie, this movie is nearly perfect to me. Taxi Driver to me is not only Scorsese's best, but one of the best films of all time-- to me of course.

BTW: Yes, I had a lot of time on my hands today.

Reviving this one; having rewatched/watched more of his films as of late, I would say my rough ranking goes something like this:

1) Taxi Driver
2) Goodfellas
3) The Departed
4) Raging Bull
5) Shutter Island
6) Casino

I still need to see all of his filmography and rewatch the ones I don't remember that well.

majid86
goodfellas all the way

Maybe switch Casino and Shutter Island.. hmm...

majid86
Casino was great but it felt like GoodFellas 2 just set in Las Vegas

SnakeEyes
Yeah, but I didn't have a problem with that!

Darth Martin
Casino is my favorite. Of the three I've seen probably in this order:

1.Casino
2.The Departed
3.Goodfellas

juli888
Mean Streets

Mr Parker
Cape Fear is my favorite.

smokin' I have only seen Taxi Driver once and it was a few years ago,but I remember seeing it and not knowing what the big deal about it was,but I may rewatch it someday,to refresh my mind

smile Anyway,Out of that list,I would go with ''Goodfellas'' at the moment,I actually started watching ''Casino'' for the first time last night, only about half an hour into it,but so far it's been good

Bat Dude
My favorites are Goodfellas and Casino. Raging Bull was also great. Never saw the big deal about Taxi Driver. It's a pretty cool film, but Goodfellas is much better, imo.

I hated The Departed. That movie was so overrated. Jack Nicholson was good as always (the best part of that movie), but Leo was annoying as hell (and slept with another man's wife. I know it's just a movie, but stuff like that makes me hate a character)

residentevil1
Taxi driver, my favorite movie of all time.
