I use big words, then purposely misspell them.

It's fun and it makes you think.

So, I cannot use "big words" now because I might come off as trying to look smart? That's preposterous, for Christs sake. I think it's just an excuse to boast using simple words for people who cannot comprehend a stable diction in their sentence structures.

I think people who utilize differential words should remain that way. It's how certain people speak. If you're on-line and you do not know the meaning of a certain word, you can always google it.

Yuck, I hate marmalade. Jam, friends! Eat lots of Jam! Marmalade only comes in orange. Psst, I can buy Orange Jam.

While I agree, to a point, I also must state that sometimes "big" words are just a part of their normal vocabulary. I work in a field where the choice of words must often be precise, and saying something without "big" words is not a wise one. Language should be dependant on two things, the audience and the ability to say what is needed with "smaller" words is possible. I, at times, will forget that everyday people do not always speak as I do, and will begin speaking in my professional babble. Scientists often become so enmeshed in their work that they have difficulty doing so, and so they become more reclusive and avoid speaking to people, my father-in-law is an excellent example of this.

Remember a strong vocabulary is a strong asset, try increasing yours as well as reminding others when they "wax verbose" wink couldn't help that one.

Yea so. I meant try using small words alot more to get further with more people, communication-wise.

I'm not saying to completely stay away from big words. Sprinkling your speech with 'em is ok. Overdoing it would be unnecessary, of course. I'm just saying that using mostly understandably words will do to. On top of coming off as considerate, modest/humble. Good characteristics in speech, I'd say.

I dunno maybe it's just me. When I talk, in person, I don't like making people feel like they have to pick up a dictionary at the cost of my trying to "sound smart". Getting my point across very understandably trumps sounding smart, to me.

I know what you mean: intentions are everything. If communication is your primary endeavor, then you will have no need for boastfulness.

I agree completely.

People shouldn't use "big" words, for a completely random example the word "inherent." Especially when they don't know the meaning of the word. smile

Discourse should be limited entirely to phrases like:

How now brown cow?

In fact, that particular phrase should be the entirety of social and professional interaction.

Perhaps you should consider that those who use "big words" do so not to seem more intelligent, but because they do not want to be able to communicate with the lowest common denominator.

The difference is the Harvard snobs are the ones with the money and political muscle. Those 20 average citizens are going to hear what you say, and then go on with life, the snobs may actually do something about the information received. Average citizens are average because they didn't do anything to make them anything but average.
