Welcome to the Star Wars forums! For those of you that are unaware, these are the oldest forums in KMC, and in fact are the reason for the existence of these forums at all, it starting off life as a Star Wars board during the run up to Episode II. This legacy is the reason Star Wars has such a distinctive set of areas to itself here. This thread explains certain rules and guidelines designed to try and ensure that these forums remain worthy of such distinctiveness.
At the time of writing, we are in somewhat of a lull for Star Wars, after the release of the final film, and still some way away from the planned tv incarnations. Still, Star Wars is a franchise that will most likely never die in our lifetimes. It simply has its quieter times sometimes. So, whether you are a big film fan, EU fan, or want to try and get news about upcoming Star Wars products, you are very much welcome here, and please do make yourself part of the continuity!
First off, a quick explanation of some terms you might see used around here:
PT = Prequel Trilogy, Episodes I, II and III
OT = Original Trilogy, Episodes IV, V and VI
EU= Expanded Universe, those parts of Star Wars fiction not created by George Lucas.
SE= Special Editions, the 90s re-releases of the films, complete with changes
GL= George Lucas, of course.
KOTOR= Knights of the Old Republic, the computer game series that is current champion of EU produce.
Next, some rules:
1. Star Wars is one of those things that invites a certain amount of heated debate sometimes. We understand that feelings run strong, but there are limits. We accept a certain amount of rough and tumble in a debate, but once an argument has clearly gone beyond attacking a position and is simply an insult/flamefest, the mods will stop it. Warnings will be issued, and bans if necessary. Focus on what you were arguing about; don't let your distaste for someone else's position get you thrown out by getitng more focussed on them than your own argument.
2. If creating a new thread, please do check if your subject has been discussed before. Use the search function to check. If a thread is buried deep or hard to find, a duplicate is not an issue, but it is somewhat vexing to have multiple threads on the same subject on the same page. Just take a look around first!
3. Make sure you are posting in the right section! The distinction between the OT and PT areas is quite clear. Of course, some topics have a bit of crossover, so just put a little thought into where you think it should go. If it absolutely straddles the divide, put it in the PT area, as that is the ‘most current’ area of Star Wars.
On that point, any information about the upcoming Star Wars television shows also goes in the PT area. That might sound a little weird but here is why- as I say, it is the most ‘current’ area, and it is where the latest Star Wars news goes. Furthermore, GL’s involvement with the series calls into question how much we can actually call it EU (see the Canon section, below). Regardless, for now please just use the thread provided. Should a Star Wars tv series ever become big enough- and we all hope it does- it should get its own section.
If it is about an event that happens in the films but you are relating it to EU events, put it in the EU area. As you will see elsewhere in these rules, the film sections are kept clear of EU.
All 'Versus' fights of any descriptions go in the Versus area... which then has its own rules.
4. Always current in the EU section, and it will become relevant to the upcoming tv series, here are the directions from KMC forums Admin Raz about the use of spoilers:
"Let me start by giving a quick definition of a spoiler. According to Dictionary.com its when a post 'divulges information intended to be a surprise, such as a plot twist in a movie.' In Star Wars terms its anything that hasn't been officially confirmed by LucasFilm.
Spoiler Thread
When starting threads about spoilers, please put the word 'spoiler' somewhere in your title. Believe it or not, there are some people out there who want to discuss Episode III without knowing the WHOLE story before watching the movie.
Spoiler Post
If you're going to post a spoiler in your post then please put the spoiler text within the spoiler tags.
An example:
Episode II is going to be called 'Attack of the Clones'!
This would appear as:
: Episode II is going to be called 'Attack of the Clones'!
Thanks for reading, and enjoy posting
