The pronunciation is a lot like "gene", only if the "g" and "n" were replaced by "m"s.

I didn't realize that memes were a popular term on the internet. I guess I'm speaking more academically. I've talked to all my psych profs, and they had no idea the term existed (though memes, imho, are very relevant to a lot of psychology).

I guess I'm just really surprised to see it. People look at me like I'm crazy when I try to describe memes. Although, if I have my way, it will be memes I am researching in like 15 years

Basicly a theme which takes root in the popular imagination and spreads viraly. I think its something like that.

AllYourBase and ChuckNorrisJokes are the best examples I can think of.

Most snowclones (another great word) are also memes so you get hundreds more that way.

I really don't like 4chan. It's like a mountain of stupid crap and childish nonsense. But there's a vein of gold in that mountain and I must mine it.

/co/ is fairly cool though. They come up with a lot of funny moments in comics. An odd number of them involving Spider-man.

hahaha, ya, thats almost exactly what my social psych prof said

However, I am also involved in a cognitive neuropsych lab, and even there it is generally treated as philosophy or pseudoscience. That may just be the lack of real conclusive experimental results for memetics though.

It might just be me or my school too. Apparently my girlfriend's first year text had a mention of them in it. Mine didn't .

Ya, Dawkins (a major evolutionary biologist) coined the term in the 70's in a book called "the selfish gene".

I generally lean more to your type of definition for meme, simply because it is much more robust. Blackmore's definition is basically "A unit of replication that is passed through imitation", which is exactly what you said . I think that one works better then the interpretations that let memes be any form of mental construct or schemata.
