FistOfThe North
I never got into the comic but the movie was suppose to be like exactly like the versions in Frank Millars novels.

How old is he?

He can't be that young, seeing as you're late thirties.... I think.

he movie 300 is based off Frank Miller's work which in turn is based off the movie "300 Spartans" from 1962 which I am watching right now. All in all. Same battle

I saw it earlier today- didn't read it before seeing it aside from flipping through the pages at the book store last week, but I was very impressed with the visual originality and power of the movie. It has a very metallic, hyper-realistic look to it, and all of the movements of the characters- the Spartans especially- are picture perfect, sinewy and magnificent. (You know they all die, so if I mention death don't get offended, but I won't elaborate on the details.)

There are five characters who stand out, only three of which are actually based of of real Spartans in the battle. I'll give you all a bit of a diagnosis on each of them.

1. King Leonidis (obviously): Gerard Butler does a great job with both the physical and emotional aspects of his character in this movie. Leonidis is inspiring to both his men and the audience, and he's probably one of the best fighters amongst the Spartans, having a beautiful moment where he slices enemy after enemy for a series of minutes in the first battle.

2. Artemis: He seems to be one of the Captains of the Spartan 300, and probably the toughest fighter- in terms of durability- among them all, including Leonidis himself. He is not particularly large, and he looks to be even older than Leonidis, but he turns into a rampaging machine on the second day of battle and his death is beautiful to behold. As far as I know this character is not based off of any actual historical figure, but still bad ass nonetheless.

3. Stelios: Probably my favorite character in the film, Stelios is based off of the right hand man of King Leonidis in the historical battle named Dienekes. You'll all recognize him as the blonde who uttered the words "Then we shall fight in the shade." If there is a comic relief character in the film, then it would surely be him, although I think its a bit of a front to cover up his impending death. Stelios is among the greatest, possibly the best fighter in the film, and attested to be the bravest of the Spartans in the history books. In the actual battle he was among the last ones standing, defending his King's body to the end.

Stelios has several magnificent moments in the movie, one of which is hard to tell its him because of the Spartan helmets- look for the long hair streaming out... he does a lot of damage with the Persian's own weapons.

Artonis: The young son of Artemis, Artonis is not very pivotal to the plot, but his relationship with his father adds emotional depth to the films, and his lightly touched upon friendship with Stelios. He has a couple of shining moments, one of which involves him standing before a charging Rhino completely relaxed, the other of which would be the greatest fight sequence in the movie IMO. Without spoiling too much, let's just say Artonis and Stelios have a back to back fight- which looks more like a dance- as they wade into the enemy Persians... Artonis gave me the impression of being the fastest of the Spartans, while Stelios might have been the most athletic.

Dilios: Finally we have the actor David Wenham playing Dilios. You'll remember him as Faramir from LOTR. Dilios does a great job narrating the film, which of course means he survives the battle, though it is not at his choosing. Dilios has really only one moment besides the very end to show his mettle in battle when he defends King Leonidis against a huge monstrosity of the enemy army.

That's my rap on the characters and the movie in general. If i have any bones to pick with this movie it would be that it ended PERIOD
