Not necessary for making a good post. But because of the monotonous tone a post always makes, smilies help give the post the necessary intention (and reduces the probability of a post being taken the wrong way).

However, I do have a say on how I take a question. And since the manner in which I take the question lays the foundation to the reply I give, it is best to convey a post in the best possible manner to avoid, as you put it, stupid debates...

i guess thats a POV. i just think that alot of times we can just let it go, not debate them, because the more we debate them, the more immature they get, the more grade school the tactics become. they want you to debate them, so they continue their crass behavior. but, on the other hand, if you dont debate them, someone else will. so its a lose lose situation.

It's not lose/lose, you're taking it far too seriously.

I'm a bit guilty of giving idiotic debaters more time than they deserve after they've already crumbled, but either way, it's not lose/lose. People take them a bit too seriously, treating them like fights or wars.

No, it doesn't. Being intelligent is what makes me intelligent, THAT I know because THAT I am. As for debates, I know my level, but I don't go around saying it, why? Because I can just prove it in any debate I have. I don't need to convince myself that I'm good, or convince others by telling them. Most of my acclaim has come from readers deciding it of their own accord.

You, however, seem more concerned about convincing YOURSELF that you've won, that you're good, or that you're credible. The difference is simple. Many members, including myself, had systematically destroyed every debate you came up with, we weren't sitting there simply saying we'd won. We had won. i doubt that there is not an argument you cannot counter. i bet that there are quite a few.
the way i see it, vanity is an ugly trait. lets say you see a FINE ass honey in a pub. you roll up to her, and she is the biggest byatch you have ever met. that in itself negates her beauty.
there is a fine line between being mysterious and being a vain bastard. mysterious? yes, some chicks dig that. vanity? well, at first, some will find it attractive, but it gets old really fast.
