STOP! WINDOWS REQUIRES IMMEDIATE ATTENTION!

Windows has found 55 Critical System Errors.

I keep getting popups about my system informing me that I need to download 'Regcleaner', 'RegFixit', 'RegUpdate' and such items. They tell me that I'm at risk of corruption and so on, and apparently these items will 'stabelize' my system roll eyes (sarcastic) This obviously leads me to believe that something unsavoury is on my computer and I want rid of it.

What can I do? I had AVG but I removed that and downloaded Avast! Antivirus and also Spybot, but I think I picked something up with one of those, could that have happened?

It's not my computer, it's my boyf's PC and he got the hard-drive from a friend so it could very well have already been buggered. But it's odd that this has only just started happening since I began messing with the antivirus programs and so on.

shrug

Black Dalek
AVG > Avast!

Get AVG. I had similar type of virus. Used AVG and I never had that problem again.

Syren
I got rid of Avast and Spybot and I'm just running Ad-Aware to see what comes up. I'll get AVG again as well because there were no problems before. If it ain't broken, don't fix it laughing out loud

Utrigita
I will go for superantispyware its free big grin

after that download webroot spysweeper its good at removing practically everything ;
http://www.webroot.com/consumer/products/spysweeper/index.html?acode=af1&rc=972

But sounds as you are infected would take a tour with windows malicious software removal tool to, and see if a rootkit has been installed.

Syren
I got 12 problems with Ad-Aware and removed them but to no avail, I've got AVG Antivirus and AVG Anti-Spyware running but the popups keep coming, thick and fast, which is hellishly annoying mad

What's my next step? I need to find the problem and get rid of it or I'm going to break something disgust

Oh, now downloading Spysweeper, hope it works smile

Syren
Ok, I think Spysweeper worked. I haven't had the popups today and the Sweeper found one Spy cookie, which I've quarantined. Here's hoping it lasts.

Thanks Utrigita smile

Utrigita
you welcome big grin if you get problems again just write okay?

did you take a quick run through with windows malicious software removal tool ???

Syren
No problems all day, everything's running sweet as a nut. What's the malicious software removal tool and where do I find it? confused

Thanks again smile

Stop downloading all that porn, Syren.

AVG is one of the worst free virus programs, IMO. I had it and it never caught a single thing and my hard-drive got trashed. Never had a single problem with Avast, though.

Ad-Aware is equally crappy.

BackFire
Lana, you stop downloading that porn too.

Lana
But I like it...sad

BackFire
Make some of your own then!

You too, Syren!

Syren
laughing out loud

I do like Avast! I've had it on my PC at home for ages and I've never had any problems. Jamie's PC is all fixed up now though, so fingers crossed it stays that way smile

As for porn mhm

The WMSRT (short for it) is a windows program that is designed to remove Rootkits det worst and most evil software to have ever been maked for a computer, seen that you have had a big attack a rootkit could easily come visiting you.

You will find the tool here:

http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

after that I tell me again how it is going, okay? If it doesn't find anything you can be happy and begin jump around, but empty the system restore files just to be sure that you are 99,9% clear big grin

Syren
Thanks, I'm not at my boyf's at the moment but I've downloaded it and am running it on my own PC just to be on the safe side. I'll also send him the link you've provided so he can run it too.

You're a star, thanks so much happy

Utrigita
Your welcome just write if you get problems again

An alternative to antivirus is avast! antivirus, or NOD 32. Both work extremely well for me.

An alternative for spyware catching is Spybot: Search and Destroy which picks up things that you can't find with Ad aware.

And an alternative to firewall is Comodo firewall, which if PC magazine is to be believed: will perform as well as a payed firewall.

Utrigita
NOD 32 is it good have never tested it??? and where does one download it from???

Avast and Spybot are what I use. If you paid attention to what I said, you'll see that I posted I've had problems with AVG but never any with Avast. That implies that Avast is what I used.

I use ZoneAlarm as my firewall but I don't think they offer a free version of it anymore. Works well.

Syren
I used to use ZoneAlarm but I don't have it any more.

So, if I have Avast! what else do I need, specifically?

Lana
Avast and Spybot should be able to take care of most any problem for you.

I also use a little program called CCleaner for clearing out cookies and finding/fixing registry problems.

Utrigita
Spybot is good but not one the same level as Superantispyware.

and CCleaner is brilliant big grin

yes So if I stick with Avast! and Spybot I should be ok? I used to have CCleaner on my old computer and it seemed to work well. I'll get that too.

Thanks you guys! big grin
