So I was browsing the quarter bins at my local shop when I found an issue of a Vertigo comic called "Other World". The cover looked cool and mythology-ish, so I bought it on a whim.

Link to the comic: http://www.dccomics.com/graphic_novels/?gn=5750

So...a few things.
1. I can't make heads or tails of the story (I only have issue #3 and it seems kinda complex).
2. The artwork is jaw-dropping.
3. It's definitely "adult" material (more for language than anything) but seems like an interesting premise.
4. Artwork and settings....again....just stunning.

Link to the actual mythology that it alludes to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Other_World

Apparently the story revolves around a mythological paradise created by ancient magic users, but the land has broken into two factions, one a Lord-of-the-Rings-esque fantasy world, filled with magic and myth. The other: a technological landscape that looks like something out of the movie Tron, but with a 21st century revamp.

....

So, anyone else reading this? Is it worth digging up and actually purchasing? Because I may have to investigate...

Never heard of it, but it sounds awesome.

Morridini
I'll DL the first issue and take a look at it, sounds like a refreshing comic.

Phil Jimenez is the writer/penciller. When I saw in the link that he had also done Infinite Crisis, I went back and looked at it....there's definitely a lot of similarity, and the character models and style can easily be compared to IC. But the setting and story is obviously different, and he has quite a bit of fun imagery to play around with.

It sounds very similar to a series of books that Piers Anthony wrote it started with the Apprentice Adept.

DigiMark007
I've read some Piers Anthony stuff (Xanth, right?) but I'm not familiar with that story.

Basically it was the art that hooked me. The story seems appropriately complex and all, but it's not like he's reinventing the genre with the story or anything....I've seen similar things as well, but hopefully it's done well (since I'll probably end up checking it out).

Currently I can't really afford it, and my comic purchases are tied up elsewhere (I'm putting together a sweet, and pain-stakingly thorough, respect thread)...but it'll probably be a summer purchase unless I hear negative stuff from others who may read it.

Yeah he did Xanth and Incarnations of Immortality and Apprentice Adept and others.

The Apprentice Adept though is a SciFi/Fantasy where the two worlds intertwine very similar to what you are describing in Other Worlds, I'll check this out, thanks Digi.

Sounds interesting....

It's a hobby!

Very average. If you want something special look for "The Nazz"

It even had a character modelled on the Hulk in it.

Ebay freaking kills me. You think you're getting deals, but then they add up and suddenly I'm like "How the hell did I just spend $60?"

In any case, once I decide to check it out, I'll probably look there. I already spent about $18 on comics today so that's my quota for at least a week or two.

Ever since I got just about every Authority issue there, I <3 eBay so very much. yes

DigiMark007
So!

I found all 7 issues at my comic shop.

Thoughts:

1. Holy hell it's still gorgeous. It wasn't just the first issue I read. I can't get enough of Jimenez's artwork. And the imagery he's working with is interesting and occasionally spectacular.
2. Not a bad story. Not great or revolutionary, but cool. I ended up being able to relate a bit with one of the main characters (Siobhan). And it's a nice twist on the "two factions in an all-out war" story.
3. I read through issue #7 and it said "End Part I." Boo! Can't anything end in 7 issues anymore?? Anyway, I'll probably continue reading when more come out.

DigiMark007
Hell, I might just post a bunch of wicked cool images from it....like a mini-gallery.

Go for it, I hear you orgasming over the artwork, I'd like to see what you're so excited about.

Galan007
This is an excellent series! (it's honestly one of the best series I've ever read).

I'm SO glad to see others taking interest in it. smile

If you're into mythology, you will like this series even more!

Here's a few random scans from the first issue, and the art only gets better as the story progresses:

Wonder no longer friend. Here's an in-depth look at my orgasm.

cool

...

I've tried to find the artistic "highlights" from the first 7 issues. No explanations or context, just scans. And for those interested, Phil Jimenez is the artist. He's best known for drawing Infinite Crisis, but he does a lot of other work as well.

Also, you know my policy on full-issue scanning Sym. I wouldn't want to have to edit my own post for breaking my rules.
