Why is the age "21" such a milestone achievement?

You can legally get drunk.

Mr. Bacon

InnerRise
I figured I'd get that response.

Because I was thinking, say they change the law to 23 yrs of age being the legal age to drink.

Would that be the BIG AGE to be and take the place of 21 just like that?

Probably.

I just think when you hit 21, you feel more like you're an adult, but that's just me.

InnerRise
Is the age of 21 as such a big achievement for those out there that don't plan to drink?

Any of those people here on KMC?

I thought 21 was the age when you're officially considered and adult?

Alpha Centauri
18 is the legal age of adulthood.

I never placed any significance on either age. People tend to associate 18 with being able to do anything even if your parents don't like it, but I've always been given freedom to do whatever I wanted anyway.

As for alcohol, 18 is the legal age here, but I was allowed it way before, and discovered it wasn't to my taste, so at 18 I didn't feel the urge to get wasted because I could.

The only thing i see that's great about being 21 in Aus is the pay is more then if you were twenty, that's until you consider Tax. Tax ruins everything!

I just turned 21 a couple months ago, and I don't drink...so it wasn't really that big of a deal to me, but hey, if I wanted to go out and drink, I can do so now.

I think they should just lower the drinking age to 18, personally.

Men and women join the military and serve their country... can go into battle and risk their life but arent old enough to have a beer or something... its not fair in my opinion. erm

Lana
I think the bigger problem is the fact that a higher age doesn't stop underage drinking at all and in fact makes the problem worse. It's human nature to want to do something you're not allowed to do; there's such a huge teenage drinking problem in this country because kids are never taught what moderation is, and think they're being cool by being a rebel and going out and getting totally smashed when they can't legally drink.

Shelbert Lemon
Well that I agree with as well.

InnerRise
I say, if you can smoke your life away, why not be able to drink as well.

I'm a bit of of a hedonist, I guess. I'm 19, I've drank a couple times, but I don't do it because it's forbidden. If I'm going to get drunk, what I'm drinking has to taste good. I don't get drunk for the sake of getting drunk. There should be more to it than that erm

((The_Anomaly))
21 isnt anything really that important in Canada, since we can legally drink and do anything at 19. (18 in Quebec)

Still, it holds some kind of significance, I don't really know why though.

I don't think they should push it down that far. I think twenty would be a fair age to allow alcohol consumption. I personally think eighteen is a tad young. A lot of young adults (Especially here) still lack maturity to A) know their limit and B) not drink repetitively.

The legal age to drink here is nineteen.

Hax42
I'd hate the drinking age to be 21...cant see why it is so high for you guys. You can drive a car, own a house, join the army, have sex, own a gun, vote for your government, but not drink? What is the actual reason for it being so high?

Uneeklyconfused
I used to work in a pub Having 15 or so 18 - 19 year olds in, was a hassle. The older folks didnt like it and had to often tell the kids to sit down and shut the hell up.
They are rude, obnoxious, messy, immature and think just cause they can legally drink that they dont have to follow orders.
Fights were breaking out here there and everywhere from kids hyped up on snakebite
The pub now only allow 21 year olds and over and has a more relaxed feel to it.

If you were 21 + and having to be told to sit down and shut up its more embarrassing for that person..

It's that age or lower in most countries yet you don't see such rampant teenage drinking problems in countries with lower drinking ages.

I also think it's kind of silly to turn 18 and be able to legally do pretty much anything...but one thing.

Lord Paradise
Well, it gives people something to look forward to. The list goes driving, 18-stuff, alcohol, marriage, children, retirement.

You also must remember; A lot of the countries have a strict moral code (Most EUROPEAN countries entitle young drinking, but inform their kids and enforce the rule about alcohol abuse and such.)

Not to mention the most common DA is 18.

I don't know what you refer to, but here it is different. Eighteen is the legal age to watch pornography and to have sex. Nineteen is to smoke/drink.

I think it's funny that young adults can have sex and potentially reproduce at a young age yet they can't knock off a few brain cells.

I think BOTH ages should be pushed up.

And THIS is the core of the problem, in my opinion.

In the US (which is what I have the most experience with, being as I've lived here my whole life), it's an attitude of "it's bad don't do it". No thought is given to actually explaining WHY it is bad, or teaching people about moderation, safe use, etc.

No thought is given to actually explaining WHY it is bad, or teaching people about moderation, safe use, etc. They do this in europe, though. They teach their children and fully explain to them the dangers of alcohol and even use childish mechanism to assist them. As stupid as it sounds, it works. They do it.

Never try to intellectually explain to a child how bad alcohol is. They'll look at it as forbidden and want it more. You've gotta use reverse psychology and make it a privilege at a young age so they don't have to strive for it.
