ABOUT THIS BOOK
After the 1973 success of American Graffiti, filmmaker George Lucas made the fateful decision to pursue a longtime dream project: a space fantasy movie unlike any ever produced. Lucas envisioned a swashbuckling SF saga inspired by the Flash Gordon serials classic American westerns, the epic cinema of Japanese auteur Akira Kurosawa, and mythological heroes. Its original title: The Star Wars. The rest is history, and how it was made is a story as entertaining and exciting as the movie that has enthralled millions for thirty years–a story that has never been told as it was meant to be. Until now.

Using his unprecedented access to the Lucasfilm Archives and its trove of never-before-published “lost” interviews, photos, production notes, factoids, and anecdotes, Star Wars scholar J. W. Rinzler hurtles readers back in time for a one-of-a-kind behind-the-scenes look at the nearly decade-long quest of George Lucas and his key collaborators to make the “little” movie that became a phenomenon. For the first time, it’s all here:

• the evolution of the now-classic story and characters–including “Annikin Starkiller” and “a huge green-skinned monster with no nose and large gills” named Han Solo
• excerpts from George Lucas’s numerous, ever-morphing script drafts
• the birth of Industrial Light & Magic, the special-effects company that revolutionized Hollywood filmmaking
• the studio-hopping and budget battles that nearly scuttled the entire project
• the director’s early casting saga, which might have led to a film spoken mostly in Japanese–including the intensive auditions that won the cast members their roles and made them legends
• the grueling, nearly catastrophic location shoot in Tunisia and the subsequent breakneck dash at Elstree Studios in London
• the who’s who of young film rebels who pitched in to help–including Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Spielberg, and Brian DePalma

But perhaps most exciting, and rarest of all, are the interviews conducted before and during production and immediately after the release of Star Wars–in which George Lucas, Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Sir Alec Guinness, Anthony Daniels, composer John Williams, effects masters Dennis Muren, Richard Edlund, and John Dykstra, Phil Tippett, Rick Baker, legendary production designer John Barry, and a host of others share their fascinating tales from the trenches and candid opinions of the film that would ultimately change their lives.

No matter how you view the spectrum of this thirty-year phenomenon, The Making of Star Wars stands as a crucial document–rich in fascination and revelation–of a genuine cinematic and cultural touchstone.

queeq
We fall for it again.

General G
We always will...

Count Makashi
Fight the urge people, don't allow Lucas to make even more money, or he will make Jar Jar episodes one day, you have been warned.

queeq
He made Ewok episodes one day: live action and animated. I didn't buy those either.

Count Makashi
That is because he made allot of money from movies, now he will make even more money from stuff related with SW and you know he will make Jar Jar TV episodes, he is his favorite character, after all. I say we stop him, with all means necessary.

queeq
Yup, 'fraid so.

General G
I haven't bought anything off there in a while...

Count Makashi
If you buy something on Ebay, can they ship it to EU?

General G
If they couldn't, they wouldn't be a very good place now would they? They ship everywhere nuts

Count Makashi
Even in far reaches of third world country's.

queeq
They??? They??? Most do, but some don't. Depends on the seller.

General G
Yes they!

You could always try.

queeq
It usually says where they ship.

How many times have they played that now?

Count Makashi
Maybe some time later, we can download it, from the Internet, for free. That would be great.

General G
Eevrybody downloads stuff now. And it is free to watch it off T.V. too you know.

Count Makashi
Yea, but probably not in my country, which program.

General G
Which program for what?

Count Makashi
On which program will it be on TV, like Discovery, that was just an example.

General G
Dunno, they haven't even said what it will be, or if they will do anything at all, but I'm sure they will.

He whined allot.

Only in ANH and half of ESB.

General G
And after that, he was just a bad character. smile

Count Makashi
Who still whined. The whining is strong in him.

General G
He didn't whine too much after 5.

Alliance
What the f**k?

General G
wtfed again? What this time?

queeq
Anakin whined more than Luke.

Alliance
I find it harder to sympathize with Luke's character.

queeq
That's very strange. There was nothing sympathetic about Anakin, plus he didn't change. Luke did.

Alliance
Ankin changed... a lot. Luke had no justification for his actions. Anakin is at least in an interesting situation.

General G
I have to say that I agree with Alliance on this one.

He got a black leather suit on.... yes, I understand why you like it.

General G
I think he prefers the white armor over the leather.

Alliance
Leather is cool too.

White armor is more meaningful.

General G
Would you prefer a clone in armor or leather than?

Alliance
clones would feel naked without their armor.

General G
Even if they wore something else that protects them more instead?

queeq
Like spandex.

General G
Not what I was thinking, but that works too...

Alliance
Yeah, they feel naked without thier armor even if wearing other clothes.

Their armor is their real birthday suit.

General G
Creepy. Is their armor only including their infantry armor? Or does it include their pilot armor?

Alliance
Whatever they are trained to be.

queeq

Is there anything underneath? I mean, can clones procreate?

Alliance

Nah. Even commandos who do that sort of stuff hate it. They feel "naked"

General G
But they wouldn't express that to their superiors I assume? Sounds like an odd execuse.

Alliance
As clones get more independant, they express more of a 'tude.

Many don't like the Jedi, for good reasons, and it would depend on who they were expressing it too.

Its not an excuse, its just distractingly awkward...like having your legs removed or something.

General G
And when they get onto the battlefield, certain attitudes can affect how they act, and are more prone to getting shot.

I am sure that is a bit more extreme than not wearing your armor, but your point is seen.

Why? We know from our history that troops go out to pillage and rape. I wonder what the Clones did on those thousands of planets they went to.

This is very good news

Justin Lee has done this with reasonable success in the past with members of the A Team and the cast of Grange Hill so i reckon this will be a good show
What he does is harrass stars of yesteryear to get together in one room for a reunion
i doubt Ford will play ball but i reckon Fisher,Hamill,Baker,Bulloch,Williams and Prowse will at least be up for it
