LAME!
But, WRONG, the most Evil, Scary, Frightful Film, of all time, is Slither!

Evil Dead
Brokeback Mountain was an excellent film.

the scariest movie ever..........Jaws, hands down.

dave_kodak
Jaws? Really, i think "IT" was scary.

cropsy_is_god
This is a tough Question because everybody is scared of different things. I used to be scared of Arachnophobia even though its not really a horror film.

DOYLEZOMBIE
I use to fear sleepy Hollow when I was younger
(The one with Johnny Depp)

The Shining gets my vote. first time i watched it as a kid, i was really freaked out.

really?......ofcourse. Jaws scared more people than any other film in history. It terrified an entire nation........more than 30 years later there are still people who will not swim in the ocean because of the fear this film instilled in them.

no offense......but "It"? it was a tv mini-series..........nobody should be scared by anything fictional that can be aired unedited on national broadcast television, much less specificly made for it.

I cant remember being scared of films while watching them buti did have alot of nightmares about hellraiser walking around my room at night

Lord Shadow Z
I wouldn't say scared but Hellraiser disturbed me a lot... it had this kind of gritty, sick horror that was really uncomfortable to watch. The sequels went by in a blur but the first was creepy.

Micheal_Myers
The Ju-on series gave me the most jump factor. It left me a bit creeped out as well.

~Forever*Alone~
hmm, none of them are really that scary....

cant think of one that scared me.....

ADarksideJedi
The Norman Bates movie!jm

ladygrim
i know i sound pathetic but the jeepers creepers 1 freaked me out for a while when i first watched it .. i couldn't go out at night by myself for ages...

LoneUnknown
When I first saw Scream when I was about 7 it gave me nightmares for weeks, I just kept dreaming about Ghostface. But I love it now, and it doesn't scare me at all. The Shining also scared me when I was little. Over the past few years I can't remember being genuinely scared by a horror film.

The movie that scared me the most was The Exorcist. The remade one. It scared the HELL out of me. Then again, I was very young at the time, but still. Devil crap freaks me out for some reason.

Darth Vicious
As a kid I used to be scared of a tv show called "Werewolf"(I think) back in '87. I remember I used to check under the bed everytime the show ended. As an adult I believe movies like Blair Witch Project, The Exorcism of Emily Rose because movies like that have a realism to them. Blair Witch msotly because at the time it came out I used to lived by a wooded area.

cropsy_is_god
I dont think any films have ever actually scared me. I just dont scare when it comes to films.

Violent2Dope
I'm not scared by films anymore(specially the gore ones, can't get enough out of those) but I think what scared me was probably IT, mostly cause Clowns used to terrify me( which is ironic since now my favorite band is Insane Clown Posse).

Doom 3 is ****in scary because the monsters come out of nowhere and shit. Also Resident Evil 4 the Regenerators were friggin creepy.

To me, "The Exorcist" is a laugh riot and not even close to being scary. But that's just me.

Kupo_Avalanche
its not the movie that scares me.
its the fact that it actually happened to someone, and it could hapen to anyone.
that's what scares me about it.

that is TRUE!! lol But on the other hand, the latino guy did make quite a hot chick!!

lynn_d_kimbell
The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre was the first movie I ever saw that really scared the crap out of me (considering how long ago that was). And also considering the fact that a friend and I watched it at the drive-in, and as the credits were rolling, a big guy in a mask with a chainsaw was walking around to all the cars, revving his chainsaw up in people's faces. My friend put her car in reverse and took off out of there so fast that she ripped the speaker box off the pole. It was still dangling from her car window as we hit the highway and sped towards home!!!......Jaws came out when I lived in Hawaii, and needless to say, I DID NOT go into the ocean the whole two years I lived there. That was the kind of effect Jaws had on me!!!

Impediment
The Changeling scared the shit out of me. In a way, it still does.

Still, I have to say that Jaws is the movie that affected me the most. To this day, it has the same effect on me.

Nosada
As an adult nothing has outright terrified me. IT was the only film (albeit, as previously mentioned, a mini-series) that scared me as a child. I grew up watching horror movies, and became desensitized to gore. Now that I'm 22 and have a grasp of things like psychological terror and subtle frights, I'd say the following movies I would say gave me an itch:

Signs, The Mothman Prophecies, The Ring, and The Grudge.

As for my vote for scariest film of all time, all things considered it's a tie between The Shining (Kubrick) and Nosferatu the Vampyre (Herzog).

NormaBates
Pet Sematary, Zelda still does it to me!!!!!!!

In all seriousness,
The Exorcist affected me most as a child.

Since then, the only movie in my adult life that has somewhat affected me was the New War of Worlds movie. It's not so much the aliens, but the fact that I'm struggling to protect my family. Family means a lot to me...and I'd never want to face a situation like that.

Bat Dude
Well, for me, it's about what doesn't scare me, because most horror films do... However, I do kinda set myself up to be scared, because I'm always so curious... The only ones that don't are the Halloween and Friday the 13th series', because their essentially about serial killers, and I hear about that kind of stuff all the time...

But... if I had to choose one, I'd say Nightmare on Elm's Street, because when I was little, I didn't fall asleep the night I saw it...

I think it was the corniest movie ever.

Etrigan
Quite possibly the only films that have ever really terrified me are ones directed by David Lynch. Mulholland Drive was horrific. A good film, with a sugar-coated plot in general, but it has black and surreal themes that run through it which just make it so unnerving to watch.

But my actual vote for the scariest film of all time is The Shining, because it's so masterfully filmed and acted. Jaws wasn't scary for me, more of a thrill-ride.

SESSION 9

MildPossession
Session 9 is definitely creepy.

jaden101
not from a personal point of view but from a point of view of films having a social effect in their time then the exorcist and jaws are definitely up there....and i still remember the reaction of the woman coming out of the theatre at cannes after watching the blair witch project

BWP is a seperate debate on a personal level...either people loved it or hated it...i personally thought it was a brilliant movie....especially the fact that me and my mate had to walk home through the woods after seeing it

from my own point of view...i always thought the remake of "the thing" was really scary when i was young

there was also a film when i was very young that had an effect on me...cant remember the name but it was about vampires and someone who had been bitten went to their friends house and was floating at their window while knocking on it...that always freaked me out

another one for me was "dreamscape"...the bit about the presidents recurring nightmares about nuclear holocaust..and in particular finding the kids in the closet that were crying for help...then they all look burnt and disfigured

there was also a scene in an old japanese movie called "black rain" about hiroshima that had an impact on me...one scene in particular is when the woman is doing her chores...she lives outwith the blast zone and sees the mushroom cloud from afar...later on after the bomb there is a knock on her door and when she opens it the man standing begging for water is burnt to a crisp

i have a fear about burning so another bit in a film (obviously not a horror) is the bit when jimmy gets napalm'd in "we were soldiers"....yuck

alot of people mentioned the shining...its never really a film that scared me all that much...except the woman in the bathroom

someone mentioned arachaphobia...which is really meant to be a black comedy...but one scene creeps me out...when the spider comes out of the old dead guys nose....

BackFire
I never thought BWP was particularly scary.

It has some relatively creepy moments, and the ending is fairly effective, it just never got to me like some other films have.

That said, I think it's a damn good movie. I think it's very unsettling, not because it's scary, but because watching the characters kinda dip towards insanity as their situation gets more and more dire is a tragic thing to witness.

The most brilliant thing BWP had was its advertising campaign.

Unfortunately the original has kinda been marred by the stupendously terrible and shittacular sequel.

As far as The Thing. I pretty much agree, Jaden. That is a rather creepy film. I love how it plays with paranoia.

Personally, I also think The Fly is very disturbing. The idea of basically falling apart like that, and transforming beyond your control is horrifying. And the end, when his flesh falls off and we finally see the end result, it's one of the most chilling moments I've experienced with a film.

Oh, and Arachaphobia is a mixed bag. If you have a fear of spiders like I do the premise is terrifying. The execution is more campy than anything. But the power of the premise, and the fact that it's halfway believable makes it somewhat scary for us who fear spiders, I think.

WrathfulDwarf
I think films that involve phobias shouldn't really count.....

Like fear of Sharks (Jaws) or spiders (Arachnophia) snakes (Snakes on the Plane) etc...

Those films are intended to scare a certain group rather than the general audience.

I'm more of a realist (yeah, it's an oxymoron here..we're talking about fiction) when it comes to fear in horror. I think the scariest thing in a film is another Human being. What's more scary and disturbing than humans?

Getting eaten by another human.

So with that in mind.

All Cannibal films are scary. From Cannibal Holocaust to Silence of the Lambs....Cannibal films are far more disturbing, scary, and shocking....so take that!

BackFire
Your point about films dealing with phobias is fair, though I wouldn't lump Jaws in with those. That film scared people on a whole different level. It CREATED the phobia for a lot of people, rather than just scaring people who already had the phobia.

Far as Cannibal films go, the idea is creepy enough. But I don't think CH is at all scary. Because I put can't put myself into that setting; I know I'd never ever find myself in the amazon, so there's nothing to be scared of.

That's a big thing, for me, being able to actually see myself in that situation. If I can't, then it's not scary to me. Why Hostel isn't scary, because I'm never going to go to wherever it is that the movie takes place. Why Hills Have Eyes isn't scary, because I know I'll never find myself on a dirt road in the dessert after listening to so weirdo gas station clerk. Same with Blair Witch. I need to relate in order for a film to get to me. I think that's the case for a lot of people. And that's why a film like Jaws is so terrifying - because everyone at some point or another goes into the ocean, and there's always that feeling that "what is under here that I can't see?"

Ha-Son
The Exorcist.

The Grudge? The bootleg version of "The Ring"? lol.

I'm sorry but in my opinion that's the worst horror movie i've ever seen in my life, and i'm a horror movie buff. There wasn't even any blood in it. Not a drop.

And good horror without blood is like a porn flik w/o sex.

But to answer your question, i don't think there's a #1 scariest movie. There a many #1 scariest movies though.

For example, the movie i'm watching is one of the scariest movies of all time. And that movie is 1985's "The Night of the Living Dead"

I think it's the best and scariest movie with the best score out of the entire saga and definitely scarier than 80% - 90% of all zombie movies that ever came out.

There have been plenty of horror movies without blood in them. Just because they arent slasher or zombie films doesnt mean they arent horror.

I disagree with your "good horror without blood is like a porn without sex" statement. Just because there is no gore in some horror movies doesn't mean they aren't great horror movies.

Take the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre for example, almost every violent act in that movie takes places behind closed doors and the audience doesn't get to see it. Yet, it's one of the best horror movies ever made.

Good horror movies shouldn't have to rely on blood/gore to make them scary.

Salem's Lot

Like Freeman said, you can get amazing horror films without lots of blood or any blood... stupid to think only gore makes a good horror film.

i put the pieces together after hearing the last voice on the tapes with it being the same as the voice Gordon hears at the start...it wasn't exactly complex

i just thought the setting itself would've lent itself to something far more potent than what was delivered

I usually don't get scared with movies easily, but the only movie that gave me nightmares was Event Horizon. I kept dreaming of the part when the crew saw the video of what happened to the previous crew. That just messed with me for a while. I really don't know why though.

Demons freaked me out because of the sheer in your face violent nature of the infected.

Both similar films. I think the best horror films are the ones that are shot in such a way that you are amongst the survivors. Not 1st person but enough to fell you're there.
And for those characters to go through a situation where suicide may be a resonable decision rather than face the threat.
Because facing the threat alive can result in a fate worse than death.

City of the Living Dead also had a creepy looming scary threat. Fulci rules.
