Overpowered Comic Characters

Well, I've observed that, in the realm of comics, there are quite a few overpowered characters in both DC and Marvel. And some would argue that there are different understandings on how overpowered a character is. This is true, and of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I'll name a few characters I believe to be pretty overpowered.

Phoenix - Immortal. That alone makes her pretty insane. She has all these cosmic powers, telepathy, etc.

Galactus - Nothing really needs to be said. As far as I know, he's the single most powerful being in the universe or something. He eats PLANETS, for crying out loud! Guy's got an appetite, too...

Silver Surfer - Immune to most physical attacks, can manipulate matter. Has some crazy cosmic powers. Really freaking fast on his board, too.

Martian Manhunter - Totally exploits the powers of Superman and adds in some new ones, such as mental abilites.

Deadpool - Guy can regenerate from pretty much anything. Someone even said he regenerated from being liquefied , and had the composure to make his ole' wisecracks while he became... "un-melted".

There are tons of others I could sit here and name, but you get the point. I understand that it's cool to have a super hero with a bunch of nice flashy powers, but come on now. After a while it just gets ridiculous. What's the point of even reading after a while? All you see is an overpowered super hero defeating a bunch of defenseless enemies who don't have a chance in heck of harming him. In fact, the only challenge faced by an overpowered superhero is an even more overpowered super-villain.

I prefer reading about heroes who have a minimum of powers, and rely more on training, equipment, and weapons. In short, I admire the hero who has to dodge a bullet or take cover, as opposed to one who takes on a whole volley because he knows they'll just bounce off harmlessly.

As a solution, whenever I'm thinking up battles, I often give any overpowered people a serious overhaul. For instance, I would seriously tone down Superman's powers and resistances, to the point where high-caliber bullets might just hurt him a bit, maybe cause some bruising, and high-explosives would seriously injure him. Some would argue that by doing this I destroy the character; I do it for my benefit. I do it because I believe, in my battles, that, in most cases, one superhero/villain should have at LEAST a 40, at the very least, a 25% chance of beating the other. I don't like to see a group of six super heroes having a 0% chance of beating Dark Phoenix.

Anyways, these are just my thoughts. I hope I didn't offend anyone.

Those guys aren't even near the top of people who are overpowered.

chithappens
Should they just give everyone a broom and let them duke it out?

Skeets
MM can't be overpowered he gets knocked on his ass every 3 appearances.

Jason, these two are overpowered. (All credit for the images and respect thread goes to Galan.)

That's Mad Jim Jaspers and his creation, the Fury.

Fury has survived universal nullification.

There's more in the thread. And trust me, there are overpowered characters, but you have to look at who their peers are and the level of power.

This image is impossible to describe, except that it puts Jaspers in the top 10 or so of the most powerful beings in Marvel.

Did you have to stretch the page? erm

Silver Surfer doesn't count anymore. BP is stronger than him

i like his missing tooth

Personally, I've always felt Surfer to be over-the-top; not so much in sheer power but in versatility. A planet-finder really only needs very few abilities: find the planet, fly to it, defend against attack from any inhabitants (bolts and shields). Period. Matter transmut, time stuff, etc: simply not necessary. Plus it would minimize PIS.

The reason for all those extra powers is that:

A) It allows conquest of highly advanced civilizations
B) Heralds are basicly aspects of TehBigG's power

boriquaking55
Most of the characters in Excalibur - they're apparently now all omniversal beings or some other crock of sh1t

My main problem with overpowered characters resides in the Mutant community for the most part. erm

That ain't bad, though I still would say SS could do that with sheer brute force (kinda like how he took care of that Annihilation fleet). After all, once Ol' Purple Skirt gets done with them, there's only gonna be smoking ruins anyway, at best.

My version of the Surfer would also only be able to wield power cosmic when on his board (that's why he falls when knocked off). On the other hand, he would be a much more formidable opponent in h2h.

All I'm saying is that it is my personal preference not to like certain characters that I view as overpowered, it just doesn't float my boat. See, I liked the third X-Men movie, it was great and all, but I just didn't like the fact that they gave the Phoenix such a ridiculous amount of power. The same goes for other comic characters. (I know you can't compare the comics to the movies, I was just using it as an example)

A well written character with immense power can still be a good read.

There are people that can write a compelling story with people like Strange, Galactus, Surfer, Yuki (shifty) and many other characters that border on being omnipotent.

Does it say real world? No.

Maybe you should've read some of my earlier posts wink

I stated that they were overpowered in my eyes. As in, it is MY personal opinion that they're overpowered in comparison to other characters. I never said anything about the real world.

"A well written character with immense power can still be a good read."

Good point. This is true. Very true. Any character, weak or strong can be made into a great character by a good writer. I've read a few comics on overpowered characters and I liked 'em, I just don't admire them as much as the other, more lower key characters.

superbatman86
Excaliber chararcters. Somehow they have like 10 people who are supposed to be "Omni-Versal" gaurdians and fight multiversal threats everyother issue, but none of those characters ever even attrack the attention of eternity or Galactus or LT or face anyone outside of Excaliber.

What the f**k? Thanos is one of, if not the, best written cosmic. And yes he's powerful, but he's a genius on a level that surpasses even Doom. He can outprep the freaking batman, Dr. Strange, even Reed and Doom, COMBINED. The brilliant thing, is how his character changes over time, like how someone can get ultimate power 3-4 times, and throw it away each time.

Yeah, I'm just playing around.

Thanos is a great character, and interesting. However, you have to agree that it's a lot of powerdisplay and showing off in his comics?

Mobra
Lol. How is Drax killing Thanos PIS? He's Drax, who is designed specifically to keep Thanos in check.

Merlyn and Roma.

That's not exactly true.

I could give you many examples but here's Eternity and Infinity with Roma in a FF issue:

And since you mentioned Galactus, he also makes an appearance in this issue,

alongside Saturnyne and Gatecrasher of the Technet from Excalibur:

I don't think there's a such thing as overpowered... so surfer is a billion times more powerful than BP (yes, he is stick out tongue), maybe that just makes BP underpowered... i say if a character is meant to be as powerful as they are, then so be it... top quality writers will always get the best out of them anyways...

Karate Kid very easily erm

He isn't half as uber as people think he is, Pre-Crisis he definetly was, but Post-Crisis he's not half as impressive.

Resurrection Man is a cool character, but extremely overpowered IMO.

My issue with X-3 was not that they gave Phoenix such a huge amount of power, but that they did it while ignoring the Phoenix Force...

But I'm a purist that way...I also didn't like the way the X-Movies tinkered with Logan's backstory...
