Are they?? Would forums go to hell in a hand basket without chaperones?

There necessary to keep the order around any given forum so as to avoid any form of abuse, offense, spam etc etc. Which does actually happen around these boards.

Pretty much. People tend to go too far by forgetting that they are debating over the internet, things get out of hand and so then a moderator must step in...

i think that it depends on the focus of their task. imho a mods' sole purpose should be to eliminate malicious people who exist online in order to disrupt and annoy. i would argue that this alone was the original inspiration for people on newsgroups demanding moderation. most people can deal with rudeness without having to cry to some parental gaurdian unit. what really matters imho is that people are in place with the authority to deal with mischievous e-sabateurs.

so no, mods are necessary/unnecassary depending on the tasks they perform and how effectively they prioritise them, imho.

They are always necessary, that they do a lot of things wrong doesn't mean that the forum would be better of without them.

Well on occasion. A moderator is needed when you do not know who is coming in.

I think the Movie Discussion forum needs a little cleanup. The first objective should be to actually make it a respectable forum about movies.

I think questions like this- as ever happens with talk about mods- are based on the false perception of forums like this being a public serivce.

As opposed to what they actually are- someone's private webspace that everyone, basically, is only here at by invitation.

They are good for holding the peace.And most of the here help alot with other promblems.There are some who abuse there power however I had seen in other sites and this one.But I think it is necessary to have inleast one or two on a site.jm

Very true, that doesn't automatically make everything mods do good for the forum however. The creator of a website or forum decided to ask certain people to do him a favor, and many times you see people that become mods take it to far, or not far enough. Even starting to dictate their own policy away from what the creator of the forum intended. Nothing you can do about it though.

Well, that is absolutely and 100% up to the creator of the forum to decide, and no-one else.

But one thing is for sure- things would not be done the way the admin wants without the mods, and as that is what he wants, then it is necessary.

While that's true, I still think forums need some level of policing.

Well, it depends what you mean by necessary. if you mean 'necessary to make a good forum', that's not really possible to answer because there are as many answers as to what makes a good forum as there are stars in the sky.

The only relevant question is "are they necessary to have the forums the way the admin wants." And in this case... the answer is yes.

Exactly, knowing that....of course Mods aren't necessary. If the owner of the place wouldn't want supervision there wouldn't be any, I suppose.

So as I say, the only relevant issue is whether the owner wants them or not. If he does, they are necessary.

Moderators are un-needed, individuals simply need the position to feel supirior because they are otherwise very infrior in-life, and having the ability to impose on others over the internet makes them feel special.

Statement:
The internet is relatively harmless as far as a forum is concerned. What's someone going to do? Spam it? Make it crash? Call you a ******? Ohnoes!!!!

Conclusion:
Moderators exsist only to inflate the egos of infrior men.
And ofcourse to appease other infrior specimens who whine to said moderators and suck them off for a taste of immaginary authority.
