Tptmanno1
What he said!
Funkylicious,
specially on "take the power back"!

ChickinMeat
i think i have to add Rex Brown to my list, the bassist from Pantera. Its not that hes spectacular or anything, like solo's and stuff, its more that he keeps the rhythm well, his basslines are complimenting to the songs, and that he can keep up with dimebag.

and Michael lepond from Symphony X, hes just awesome

~AlluNeedIsLuv~
Tyson Ritter - The All-American Rejects
David Desrosiers- Simple Plan

they might not be the best or greatest but they're my favourite happy

LiveAndLetDie
Duff McKagan- he isn`t the best, but he`s pretty damn good!! He`s so awesome. He keeps the beat and he has a really good relationship with Matt Sorum when it comes to bass-drums.I really, really, really like him

Darth Travizzle
Flea. Who else? He's in the band Red Hot Chili Peppers for those of you who don't know.

RagnaViper
Favorite is probably Cliff Burton, though Justin Chancellor gives him a good run for his money.

I would also like to mention Jean Baudin, bassist for Nuclear Rabbit. The man can run that 9-string masterfully.

Maya Zurak
Flea (RCHP)
Spike (Tapete Wechseln)

*Jim Rodford (The KinKs)
*John Decon (Queen)
*Toney Butler (Big Country)

Victor wooten (the all around absolute best)
Jaco
Flea

I know you all will go crazy, but I think Les Claypol sucks ass.

ElectricBugaloo
Jaco Pastorius all the way.

mr.smiley
Yeah.Jaco was the first. If it wasn't for him none of these bass players would be what they are.I can't belive I forgot to put James Jammerson on my list.He was Jaco before their was Jaco.

In the Motown era he was the man. Then we had Jaco.

Marcus Millar (imo) puts the most feeling into his music.
Wooten is the best on a technical level. He can play like anyone you name.Flea is just brillant at playing with a band.

Alpha Centauri
Trevor Dunn is my favourite, closely followed by Geddy Lee and Justin Chancellor.

-AC

Darthburgerking
James Jamerson I think is just to simple of a bass player he does a lot of the same stuff, I think he's an amazing motown bassist and he made the funk bro's but for anything else, I just don't think he'd do as good, I for got to add Flea he's up with Matt.

ElectricBugaloo
i like the famous quote about Jaco: "There were bassists before Jaco, and bassists after Jaco." He just came in and revolutionized everything.

F*ck Larry Graham. Why hasn't anyone mentioned Steve Harris? I think he's amazing.

Well interesting thread, thanks to all of the above. I think it's be great if folks said *why* they nominate a particular person... so to kick off...

I'm surprised by the omissions of two names, especially by the Jaco- lovers: Herbie Flowers and Vail Johnson. And then there's Sting. And Phil Lynott.

Herbie Flowers - if for no other track than Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side". Straight-up instinctive genius playing right off the bat.

Vail Johnson: probably the most versatile virtuoso I've ever seen. The sheer breadth of his technique combining funk power and musicality is unequalled, IMHO. If you can stomach a Kenny G track just to see, find "Midnight Motion" (and if you know where the Montreux Festival TV Special can be found, please PM me; I'm looking for it for years.) There's a sickly-sweet Kenny G DVD where they talk all over it, but you'll see enough.

And Sting. And Philo.

Others already (possibly) named James Jammerson, Bootsie, Louis Johnston, Jaco, Jack Bruce, Nathan East, Mark King, ans Sir Paul.

FWIW

amity75
Steve Harris. I can't pick up a broom without holding it like a bass and putting one foot one a table pretending it's a monitor. Steve Harris all the way.

amity75
And John Entwhistle. I don't know if he's been mentioned yet.

Kaos sebaceous
Stanley Clarke

Mark Hoppus

ME!

I just recently disocvered the genius that is Victor Wooten. He certainly does have style. Here is a video of him in a battle:

8vdJvHE8qxA

I f*cking love to see a bass battle between Victor Wooten and Les Claypool.

Victor Von Doom
Wooten would kill him.

There's another bass thread where I posted a couple of really good Wooten videos.

I've watched this one so many times, though.

Pezmerga
Geddy Lee closely followed by Chris Squire and Tony Levin. Then Greg Lake.

SelphieT
Thanks to VVD, Victor Wooten is now on my list.

So, Matt Freeman, Victor Wooten, and Les Claypool.

You mean speed-wise? Or do you mean technique/style-wise, or all of the above? In your own opinion, that is.

It's not opinion.

Wooten is actually far more skilled in every area.

Speed and technique, in fact, not opinion.

Style is a matter of taste.

If it's an electric bass, it looks just like an average guitar, but has 4 large strings instead of 6.

If it's a double/stand up bass, it looks like a giant cello/viola/violin you play while standing up.
