people on this forum get caught trying to pass off someone else's words as their own, and it doesnt seem that big a deal. i find this odd. i always thought that plagiarism was a heinous offense and instantly discredited anyone's position on...well...anything. people have been disgraced utterly for getting caught in the act...but now it seems people get caught, they simply ignore it, and the conversation moves on like it never happened.

have we as a society grown too lax on this crime? and what of we on this particular forum? do you think this complete lack of any accountability is just an internet thing or is it worse than that? maybe you feel its no big deal at all?

discuss.

As long as it is being "Quoted", i'm fine with it.

chithappens
I'm pretty sure he means blatant, non quoting plagiarism like FOTN just did in "Racism and Whiteness"

Schecter
some people mistakenly forget to site a source AND use quotes (imho both are common courtesy unless a source is not relevant). however i have seen blatant acts of copying other people's literal pros and trying to pass them off as their own. when they get caught its just as quickly forgotten and they are allowed to continue debating as if they had credibility...and the kicker is everyone seems to go on entertaining them like it never happened. this blows my mind.

Funniest parts, is when they add a few choice words to the paragraph/article in an attempt to make it their own.

It's one thing to copy/paste and forget to add quotes, but to add words? That proves they had every intention of stealing the material.

chillmeistergen
On here they should be banned instantly, as far as I'm concerned. Off the internet, and when the work that is being plagiarised, is used specifically for financial gain or academic gain; the offence should be punishable by law.

If such an event occurs, the individual posting the information should be held solely responsible. KMC Forums should not be held responsible for member-posted information that may violate copyright law.

i agree completely on the last part. however i think the legallity of such potential liability is resolved/rendered moot with the user agreement upon registering. but then again the same can apply to anything posted here.

i guess im asking is: is this crossing the 'banning line' or is it no big deal?

As far as plagiarism goes, I think it's an issue that isn't taken serious enough. I'm in college and I've seen my fellow students copy other's work but change it slightly enough to not look the same. It annoys me when the students who do that get A's for doing little or no work at all.

I think it depends if it puts Raz under any potential lawsuits for having plagiarized material on his site. If it doesn't, the people who are plagiarizing should definitely be reprimanded, but if it does, then I say ban their asses.

Erm, I for one wasn’t even talking about it, so why the hell was I quoted? Stop thinking that this forum is a place for intellectual discourse. Like I said, most people who post here probably haven’t even graduated High School.

It happens all the time in the RF. People cut and paste from Christian sites and never tell you the site they came from. I think they do this so you can't go to the site and find reasons to debunk their information.

but that doesnt matter. theoretically according to the agreement we all checked when we registered, they cannot be held liable for anything we post. they can however recieve a cease and desist order, in which case THEN they have been made aware of the issue and as site owners they then have to resolve/remove it.

this is besides the point, anyway. legality is not the issue. plently of people are banned for bashing/spamming/etc, forum offenses which are completely legal yet against the rules. so lets not mix law with etiquette.

We're not talking about paraphrasing, we're talking about outright plagerism... as in copy and pasting a paragraph, and trying to pass it off as your own ideas.

Captain REX
I despise plagiarism.

If anyone plagiarizes a story within the General Fiction area (which hasn't happened in a long time), I delete the story and hand out a warning that says "Next time you do something wrong, you're banned."

Someone tried it with "Crime & Punishment" by Dostevsky (sp?).

Again, it also happens with NuclearWinters ranting crap in the Conspiracy forum. He listed all this random bullshit, and it turned out to be stolen from many different conspiracy sites. Not even credible ones.

Shakyamunison

Captain REX
Oh, and with FOTN's thread, Schecter...

I would have caught that immediately. It's completely not his style of posting.

correct. if there were factual evidence to support a claim it wouldn't be a conspiracy, it would be factual common knowledge. Calling conspiracy theorists out for not getting their information from a credible source is like playing basketball with a retarded kid and calling him out on double dribbling.......you've got to let some shit slide. If you were in a debate with someone, and the person outright plagiarized; tried to pass something off as 'his' own work in an attempt to both sound more intelligent and counter your points in the process, it wouldn't bother you?

I don't think delinquent plagiarist should be permanently banned... just mocked, ridiculed and shown for the asshats they are.

thats where i disagree. i dont think it should be a permanent ban the first time they're caught. but the second, yes i do think they should pull the chain and flush the idiot out of here for good.*

*im talking about a blatantly willful act of plagiarism, not simply forgetting to quote and/or link the source.

InnerRise
Plagiarism (from Latin plagiare "to kidnap"wink is the practice of claiming, or implying, original authorship or incorporating material from someone else's written or creative work, in whole or in part, into ones own without adequate acknowledgement. Unlike cases of forgery, in which the authenticity of the writing, document, or some other kind of object, itself is in question, plagiarism is concerned with the issue of false attribution. Plagiarism can also occur unconsciously; in some cultures certain forms of plagiarism are accepted because the concept can be interpreted differently.

Generally, although plagiarism is often loosely referred to as theft or stealing, it has not been set as a criminal matter in the courts. Likewise, plagiarism has no standing as a criminal offense in the common law. Instead, claims of plagiarism are a civil law matter, which an aggrieved person can resolve by launching a lawsuit. Acts that may constitute plagiarism are in some instances treated as copyright infringement, unfair competition, or a violation of the doctrine of moral rights. The increased availability of intellectual property due to a rise in technology has furthered the debate as to whether copyright offences are criminal.

The running gag is a popular hallmark of comic and serious forms of entertainment. A running gag is an amusing situation or line that reappears throughout the work. They are often unintentional at first, but familiarity or popularity of such gags among viewers encourage their reappearance. Often, the humor in a running gag derives entirely from how often it is repeated.

in order to properly paraphrase (more than just mixing words/sentences and using synonyms) you must also have an understanding of what you are writing about. the reason people copy word for word is likely because they have no grasp of what they are copying. why else would someone do it?

That's true, ey. And that would apply to a whole paragraph. anyway, back to the issue of legallity, i did in fact bring up the issue of plagiarism laws in the original post. to be clear though, it wasnt my intention to imply that the two are related directly (kids plagiarising in a forum of debate and illegal copyright/intellectual property violation.)

i just feel that a lack honesty on such a basic level, in public interaction, is a sign of poor character and no personal honor nor accountability for one's acts. in short, little frauds grow up to be big frauds. this is not 'kids being kids' imho

chillmeistergen
No you're right, it's basically kids being completely dishonest and utterly selfish. It's lying at a worse level, as someone's actual work and/or words are at expense.

InnerRise
Being that Plagiarism isn't an issue for little kids and many aren't even aware they're doing it.

It doesn't really matter.

Kids are kids.

The fact that they're not citing really doesn't mean anything. If anything, they're getting in a lot of RESEARCH practice.

I'm not expecting little kids to know the MLA Format and start giving me a page full of citations.

My Conclusion: You're over reacting. They'll learn how to cite soon enough and learn when citing is necessary and when it isn't necessarily necessary but helpful, such as on Forums.

Anata wa wakarimasu ka.....

Creshosk
And then there are the ones who casually brush off accusations. "Well I posted it{credit or the srticles themselves} before in other threads." or "Its italicized, so you should have been able to tell." oir other such dodges where its the fault of the reader for not being able to read the other person's mind.

chillmeistergen
Thanks for pointing out the conclusion.......

The kids I'm talking about aren't eight, they know what they're doing and they know it's wrong.

inimalist
honestly though, while I share your guys emotions toward plagiarism, I don't see it as a very prevalent problem. 2damnloud was called on it almost immediately, and I can't think of any respectable posters that have even been accused of it.

It sucks, it is the pinnacle of intellectual dishonesty, we shouldn't believe what people who do it say or respect their opinions, but we can surely do that as a group.

I guess I have to cop-out to the illegal stuff though. If its plagiarizing copyrighted material it is only right that the mods get involved.

Black and White by Unknown Author

A black man talks to a white man:
When I was born I was black,
When I grew up I was black,
When I'm sick I'm black,
When I go in the sun I'm black,
When I'm cold I'm black,
When I die I'll be black.

But you:
When you're born you're pink,
When you grow up you're white,
When you're sick, you're green,
When you go in the sun you turn red,
When you're cold you turn blue,
and when you die you turn purple.
And you have the nerve to call me colored.

im really adamant about the issue and would rather read opinions of members who have little or nothing to prove at the internets. if i post quotes then its 15 pages of watching 2 morons backpeddle on their unicycle, juggling bowling pins...which has become the state of the gdf. so...in short...."no"

:edit: ill describe the 2 scenarios though

member A: took paragraphs from another person's writings and irrelevant filler...like watering down someone elses vodka i guess.
blatant attempt to post someone else's work as their own.

member B: also argues with paragraphs of someone elses text. this person has invented a rule that if you quote an article anywhere in a 60 page thread, you then have the right to post passages sporatically with no words of their own, no quotation, no emphasis whatsoever.

the common element: its like debating cheat cards...well worse...far more retarded than any metaphore i could come up with...imho

The fact that I quoted two specific points, didn't make it obvious? You ruined my jab, you sensitive tw@t.
