the last two cool shooters I saw were

R-Type Final
aj5zItGCI4E

and Ikaruga

EGNSdcy-apU

Mushihimesama was another crazy one but dunno how old it is

I think there are two problems here really

1- I think side-scrolling shooters have fairly much been exhausted in terms of what you can do with them

and

2- They are relatively easy for independant operators to make, cheaply or even freeware.

Both of which have kinda killed the commercial demand for them

MadMel
ush has a point
even i could make a decent side scroller shooter erm

Kazenji
There's some good freeware ones to get

-Warning Forever
-Parsec47
-Operation SpaceHog

to name a few

Einhander....best side scrolling shooter ever. and still costs 50$ for the ps1 and almost as hard to find as intelligent cube

granted I'm not a rabid shooter fan... but I didnt like einhander as much as R-type Final and Ikaruga (even though they came afterwards I think)

Emperor Ashtar
Mars Matrix
Giga Wing
Project Raiden
Viper Phase
etc. . .

Great games, but times changed. Side scrollers won't bring as much profit as they used too.

TricksterPriest
Gradius. Always a good pick, even Vic Viper has crap durability. stick out tongue
