BEIJING (AFP) - Used condoms are being recycled into hair bands in southern China, threatening to spread sexually-transmittable diseases they were originally meant to prevent, state media reported Tuesday.

In the latest example of potentially harmful Chinese-made products, rubber hair bands have been found in local markets and beauty salons in Dongguan and Guangzhou cities in southern Guangdong province, China Daily newspaper said.

"These cheap and colourful rubber bands and hair ties sell well ... threatening the health of local people," it said.

Despite being recycled, the hair bands could still contain bacteria and viruses, it said.

"People could be infected with AIDS, (genital) warts or other diseases if they hold the rubber bands or strings in their mouths while waving their hair into plaits or buns," the paper quoted a local dermatologist who gave only his surname, Dong, as saying.

They can't even make f**king hair bands that aren't possibly lethal.

First, date-rape toys now this?

"Yo momma's so poor she uses used condoms as hair bands!"

"Dammmmn son!"

ragesRemorse
LOL so they recycle condoms, but they have no problem in exerting the largest amount of pollution of any country....,GO CHINA!

kevdude
damn chinese LOL that is sick

Quiero Mota
That's just disgusting.

It reminds me of a joke though:

Q: What do you do with 365 used condoms?

A: Melt them, make them into a tire and call it a Goodyear.

Bardock42
The spreading diseases is a joke I assume.

*Sighs.*

Damn Chinese.

I thought of this years ago, though I was doing it for comedic reasons.

Glad someone picked it up, not surprised it was the Chinese.

Do you want to say that again except understandable? sad

Who on earth (apart from the chinese) would go around collecting used condoms? blink

Geewhizz that'd be a hell of job description, imagine the chat-up line -

Girl "So, what do you do for a livin'?"

Man "Well love, I'm a pro-fessional condom recycler. That's right I find used condoms and use them again...!" wink

Girl confused "Ooookay then, nice chatting to you..."

Ushgarak
Spreading AIDS? That is ridiculous; the virus cannot survive outside outside the host for any length of time. This is the same paranoia as you had about catching HIV off the toilet seat.

good to see someone isn't ignorant of the facts

Anyone else think its crazy how much press the Chinese have been getting about bad consumer items?

botankus
I wish it were chewing gum. I have no need for hair bands.

SelphieT
You couldn't really get an STD from having a hair band in your hair, right? That's ridiculous.

botankus
You probably couldn't get E-coli from using recycled diapers as hamburger buns, either.

.....Alright.

WrathfulDwarf
I can't remenber were I saw it....but I once read a car bumper sticker that said "Recycle your Pets"

lord xyz
Wouldn't they like...clean the condoms from disease first?

No. Instead of the traditional hair band colors, they are now going to come in different flavors such as Gonorrea Green, AIDS orange, and Red-Hot Herpes.

lord xyz
So, yeah. It's ridiculous.

Robtard
I'm assuming they're being melted down and then remake into bands; they're not just cutting out the o-ring opening and selling it as is, so I can't see how AIDS, Hepatitis, Syphilis etc. could survive the process.

Also, were in the hell are they getting so many used condoms to make a commercially viable hairband product? Do the Chinese have "Condom Recycling" containers next to their cans, plastics and paper recycling?

Story sounds like complete B.S., even for the Chinese.

botankus
These condom recycling bins. Sounds like a legitimate reason to have sex with just anybody on the street - literally.

Well, China have that one child per family. They need all the protection they can get.

Apparently the stuff they used to make the blue pigment in the toy turns into GHB when its combined with stomach acid. Apparently big brothers and sisters were stocking up on it in one state that had them still on the shelves for one extra day.

The guvnor down at a boxing club I was training at for a bit years ago advised us not to use anybody else's wraps (that you put the gloves on over) for the hep B fear.

So was he just ignorant or can that at least remain in the wraps...?

Slightly different I know, but was wondering.

Cheers, Dadude.

So it would appear that he mustve been worried about blood on the wraps or something, then rather than it be a sweat thing...
Must've been erring really hard on the side of caution though, judging by that.

Thanks again.

This is a good news and bad as well.Chines are really hard working people and they know the art of making useful stuff from used stuff by recycling. But there is always a danger in recycling condoms in ti hair band.It may cause sex related diseases.I will never vote in favor of recycling condoms.

Damn, if only there was a way in which the disease could be removed from the rubber, and a way that the hair bands don't touch anyone's genitals.
