Most Controversial Song

Sol Valentine
What's the most controversial song you've ever seen or heard? I personally think Madonna's video (Forgot the name, sorry)the one where she was fully naked and was also dressed up as a catwoman look alike was pretty weird and offensive.

But what do you think?

Alpha Centauri
Why did that Madonna video offend you?

I'm not offended by any music or such, so I can't really say.

There's a difference between being controversial in the worthwhile sense, and the Marilyn Manson kind of "I'm going to tear up a bible, knowing that it will get a reaction.".

Controversy, to me, is raising or producing ideas that cause a lot of interest and reasonable discussion. Not needlessly pissing people off. I don't consider Anal C*nt to be controversial, I'd consider Morrissey to be controversial sometimes.

So who do you think has a controversial song, InnerRise?

An actual one, not just a song you like.

Cite reason also.

-AC

chillmeistergen
Imagine by John Lennon, horribly obvious choice, I know. Oh, and Paint a Vulgar Picture by The Smiths.

Healing Artisan
NWA comes to mind.

Immortal Technique's- 'Freedom of Speech' comes to mind as well. i remember reading on his site that government officials investigated his home cuz of this song. hard to believe.

'Freedom of Speech'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCYbZZTEwiM

nothing really controversial comes to mind. i'll think about it.

Alpha Centauri
F*ck the Police by N.W.A. is probably one of the best examples in hip hop.

'97 Bonnie and Clyde by Eminem. The whole "Telling his daughter about how they're going to go dump her mother's body in the water." thing.

Angel of Death by Slayer. Talking about Josef Mengele and his human experiments on jews during World War II.

-AC

Nellinator
I was definitely going to say "Angel of Death".

"F*ck the Police" definitely came to mind when HA mentioned NWA. Imagine is definitely a good call and probably the most obvious one. Lennon's "God" also comes to mind.

Venom's entire album "Welcome to Hell" definitely comes to mind. "Sons of Satan" and "In League With Satan" were definitely controversial at their time. They were probably the first band to fully embrace the full on Satanist thing.

yea, but imo it was done just for the reaction... i know he said 'people cant see the beauty of the song' or something like that, but he knew full well it'd get a reaction and that's why he released it... not because the song was good.

And you along with a few other unintelligent souls here started that whole thing, not me.......you all created that whole silly Japanese Persona of me. Someone got mad one day.......said something about me and Japanese.........and you and other weak willed/minded kids jumped on the band wagon and have created this idea of me.

It helps you sleep at night and makes you think you have a reason to hate me and I really don't care and this will be my last time explaining that to you being that I already coddled you in PMs over this. Bardock42
About my question, could you elaborate on the song?

Shinde Imasu
I think the music boards may have a tendency to cause people to erupt into arguments.

So you know, I have nothing against you, InnerRise, and I don't have anything against the rest of you either. But I do think what you said about "It helps you sleep at night" is going to get AC jumping on you even more. Not saying anything about AC, I've just noticed the sort of things he jumps on.

And Bardock, I've never heard of it either ... So you're not alone. At the moment, I can't even think of a controversial song, but then again, I've only been awake for about half an hour ... So my brain hasn't kicked in yet.

Alpha Centauri
As far as I see it, InnerRise, is just a little child with a nationality crisis, that's all. Hence why it's the one button he can't stand having pushed. It's his achilles heel and he is to be pitied, quite honestly. He's an American child who has been as close to Japan as Hitler has to Ghandi levels of tolerance, and he's bitter about it.

He just has the mind of a child, so you've gotta let him wear himself out and he'll shut up. That's why he's not discussing the topic, you see. He doesn't discuss topics, he just wants attention. People keep giving it to him, so he always succeeds in ruining threads. I'm giving him too much credit by even replying, but that's how it is around here.

Ignore him and he goes away, or ask him a question he's afraid of, and he'll go away.

**** da police of course

but that didn't really shock me.

Here's one that did:

I was only 16 but I guess that's no excuse
My sister was 32, lovely and loose
She don't wear no underwear
She said it only gets in her hair
And it's got a funny way of stoppin' the juice

My sister never made love 2 anyone else but me
She's the reason 4 my, uh, sexuality
She showed me where it's supposed 2 go
A blowjob doesn't mean blow
Incest is everything it's said 2 be

Oh sister - don't put me on the street again
Oh sister - I just wanna be your friend

I was only 16 and only half a man
My sister didn't give a goddamn
She only wanted 2 turn me out
She'd take a whip 2 me until I shout
Oh mother****er, she's a mother****er, can't U understand?

Oh sister - don't put me on the street again
Oh sister - I just wanna be your friend

I know what U want me 2 do
Put me on the street and make me blue

Oh sister!

Controversial in the traditional sense, I'd put 'Mark of the Beast' pretty high.

Controversial by my standards, probably F*ck the Police and Imagine. F*ck the Police was a starting point for anti-rap crusades, ad Imagine just spit in the face of the established belief systems without coming off gimmicky.

Exactly, you seem to think it is a contender for the title of "most controversial song". Why are you whining about people pointing that out or poking fun at that rather ridiculous suggestion?

What else can there be said. He said **** a few times. It got censored a bit. How is it controversial? Did people blockade streets to get it from being shipped? Seriously, stop your crying, if you are going to say stupid shit people will point it out. Maybe check Gaia's Music Forum, I hear only shallow kids post there, no one will give you shit about your opinion there.

You worked pretty hard on that post, didn't you? Sad.

Did people blockade streets to get it from being shipped? Dude, it's a song, and I don't think any song has been able to do something like that, so stop being stupid. I consider it to be controversial because of the amount of attention it received along with the music video (at least it got lots of attention where I'm from). It was in the town paper about how a church was upset about certain music, and NIN was one of the bands being attacked. It's not just the use of the word 'f*ck', but the song's overall lyrical content. If it was just about 'f*ck', that would be a pretty shitty reason. The song itself is about sex (which in itself can be a touchy subject), however the potency of the song lies in the perverse use of its lyrics. Thus why I dubbed it controversial. I wouldn't expect you to understand (even more so since you aren't from here). I myself don't find the song controversial, but many people do. I'm not offended by known forms of entertainment.

And just for the record, I'm not whining like you say I am. This is a forum where individuals get to state their opinions and back what they say. I'm merely stating mine, so calm down. Another thing, your posts borderline on being rude. Is that really necessary?

Before I forget, I've been meaning to ask you something, Bardock. Do you deliberately try and mimic what AC and VVD say? Do you want to appear as a musical elitist? Maybe you feel the need to kiss a** since AC has owned you so many times. I suppose that's understandable, though, seeing as how you can't think for yourself. I can see why they burn you, pathetic waste of skin.

chillmeistergen
Practically every song in the mainstream is about sex.

Eon Blue
While that statement is true (partially), I'm sure many sensitive people would find those songs offensive as well. 'Closer' is one of the songs that has perfected that formula, in my opinion.

I figured that you thought it was controversial, which might be said for the video, but there was no public outcry. No official counter actions. It just didn't generate much controversy. I am sure your town paper discussed it heatedly, but on the whole it came and went and no one was really worried.

As far as I'm aware the song offended very few people, maybe it was just your local church trying to find something to do with their Sunday.

There are certainly more controversial songs, I think Closer is probably the worst suggestion made yet. Sex On The Beach is far more controversial.

Yes, I know that an opinion is subjective. But the reasons you think that Closer is a controversial song aren't really good enough to give that kind of accolade. Wow, it was in your local paper, that really doesn't mean anything at all. It has the word f*ck in it and it concerns sex, there are far more controversial songs out there, mainstream and non mainstream.

To name a few and to get this topic moving along: F*ck The Police by NWA, Sister by Prince and Rape Me by Nirvana.

Eon Blue
Those songs were already mentioned. Good job on getting this topic to move along.

'Rape me' is about sex, there are far more controversial songs out there, mainstream and non-mainstream. Hardly a reason for controversiality.

Go back to brown nosing AC and VVD. I'm sure they love having you as their little b*tch. Laughable because your inaccurate evaluation of my personality and the situation is funny. You try to insult me with ridiculous claims, why should I mind them?

You gave an idiotic opinion and now try to dodge the obvious point by trying to make fun of me. Good for you, you are still an idiot for thinking Closer could in any way be considered as one of the most controversial songs.

And opinions might be subjective. But they can still be stupid, wrong and even insane. If it is my opinion that the moon is made out of cheese (analogous to believing Closer is one of the most controversial songs ever), then that may be my subjective opinion. But I am still wrong...and a highly uneducated fool.

As for arrogance, I might not have made it clear, you are arrogant, while being a moron, that's what I find annoying. If you made intelligent, valid points and would not randomly attack me personally with pseudo psychological evaluations, I am sure I wouldn't have a problem with it. As it is, you did it twice, for no reason whatsoever, so, go suck some cock, *******.

Took you long enough to come up with that, I was waiting like a day.

First of all, your comparison to my thinking that 'Closer' is controversial, is lame. The moon? Come on, dear Bardcock. Everyone in the planet knows the moon is not made out of cheese, saying something like that about a physical object is much different than a song. A song's meaning can be very different depending on what a certain individual gets out of it. You find my opinion idiotic, I do not. I find what you are saying to be moronic, witless, gay, and above all, stupid. You do not. It's subjective, so of course you are going to disagree with what I'm saying because you disliked me before I even posted in this thread due to my making fun of you before. You were biased subconsciously. I know you dislike me, and probably think I'm a raging idiot, but it's fun to pick on you because you get insulted rather easily. I'm sure many of you musical "elitists" such as yourself (don't cream yourself because I called you that) thought: "Hey, this guy mentioned 'Closer' as a controversial song, let's pick apart his opinion because we are so cool and oh so "elite", we've heard so many more". I've heard many songs that were more controversial than 'Closer', yes, but since NIN got discussed here, I find it to be worth said. When I first posted in this thread, it was the first thing that came to mind

Slob. Slob. Slob. Why would God waste good flesh on creating a worthless specimen such as yourself? Oh dear, Bardcock. It's ok, don't take what I say personally. It's all in good fun. You served your purpose in entertaining me. Going to put me in your stupid most hated list?

'Don't Fear the Reaper' is another. Now I'm sure you along with a bunch of other dipshits are going to say "No, it's not". I'm not even going to explain myself on this one, lest I have a conniption.

You were waiting from 11:02 pm my time to 11:29 am the next day. Gosh...wonder what I might have done in that time.

And I did not equate your thoughts on a song with the substance the moon is made of. If anything I equated the actual controversy which the song created (a thing that is in no way up to subjective whims) to what it is made of. Both are things that can factually be known. It's like saying the Velvet Underground are the best selling band of all time...it's wrong. Can be proven. Closer is not one of the top controversial songs. That really should be the end of this story.

Few other points:

* I didn't dislike you before we got into this idiotic debate

* Even if I would think of myself as an elitist (which I don't, I am not particularly knowledgeable about music on a whole), it certainly has nothing to do with talking about the controversy a certain song has.

* You took it personal that people disagreed (justified) with your mention of Closer and went on a little rage trying to get personal

* It is NOT subjective

As for the "stupid most hated list"...yeah, probably, in time. You seem bent on making yourself out to be fool, a trait I am not particularly fond of.

And AC, you are 6 months older than me, you must have mad skills to be my father.

Eminem's "Criminal" from The Marshall Mathers LP was really contraversial with homosexuals.

He created a firestorm with these lyrics:

My words are like a dagger with a jagged edge,
That'll stab you in the head,
whether you're a *** or lez,
Or the homosex, hermaph or a trans-a-vest,
Pants or dress - hate ****? The answer's "Yes",
Homophobic? Nah, you're just heterophobic,
Starin' at my jeans, watchin' my genitals bulgin' (Ooh!)
That's my mother****in' balls, you better let go of 'em,
They belong in my scrotum, you'll never get hold of em!

But then the Elton John thing happened with him and that seemingly squashed things.

Well i really meant that that probably one of the most controversial songs that i've heard..

What do you think. Would you say that that song was controversial? I think so.

He wasn't just (only) doing it to piss people off. It also, indirectly, raised awareness with the homosexual bigotry that exists here in the U.S., in a way, with how prevalent yet sublet, or in this case blatant, it is in our society today.

Not that i'm gay, but anti-homosexuality is a big problem, yet a solvable one (maybe), in our society.

Like i believe if 2 gay people want to get married, who gives a shi*t. Let them do them and i'll do me..

The Smiths had a fair few songs that created more controversy than This Charming Man, which wasn't very controversial in reality.

well i say it was. I remember it being a big deal. I remember even seeing it on my local news @ 10.

It did create angst. So much so that Em did a duet with Elton John to make up. And everyone knows about the Elton John/Eminem duet they did with the hug at the end and everything.

I remember watching it and i was like wow.

I mean c'mon. When you're like the most influential rapper of your time, like Em was, with how influential rap was, and still is, (with how gargabe the game is now) and to sing stuff like "whether you a ffag or lez, or a homosex, hermaph or a tranz-a-ves, pants or dress, hate fagz? the answers "yes,"", that's bound to cause big controversy.

"No room for Ni**er" by GG Allin.

Ive heard two versions of its origin:

1) That it was written in a empathising with Blacks for the abuse they'd get at the hands of dumb society bent on perecuting those who are different to them...

2) That it doesn't mean "No room for black people" per say, but just for cheating thieving ******* scum in general. (Like the Chris Rockian "Black people vs Ni**ers" seperation thing)

Well I was shocked when I heard it.

For those who dont know about GG Allin, he used to perform on stage naked, smeared in shit (His and other people's) and would smash glass into his head so he'd also be covered in piss and blood as well as the poo.

He would rape people mid gig and would fight all comers while singing too.

Mike Patton got alot of his onstage persona and Angel Dust era vocal delivery from him.

A controversial song from a controversial man.
