Upon returning to Japan after retrieving his father's remains in Brazil, Ryu Hayabusa finds both Ayane and Hayate in the hospital.
Turns out that Ayane, in her search for Kasumi, had brought her to Southtown, where she had attacked both Andy Bogard, brother of the 'Wild Wolf' Terry Bogard and his (supposed) fiancee, Mai Shiranui, thinking that she was Kasumi, nearly killing them both.
Little did she know that her attack on Andy and Mai had roused Terry's fury and with a band of fighters, pursued Ayane to Japan, where he wrecked shop at the Mugen Tenshin village. Following a brutal battle, Terry had put Ayane down with the Buster Wolf.
Ryu, knowing where Kasumi was hiding, sent her a message telling of the battle. Kasumi's response was summed in three words: serves them right.
Once Hayate and Ayane are recovered, they decide to team up with Ryu to get back at Terry for dishonoring their clan. Kasumi has decided not to compete, as does the members who were with Terry on the assault on the Mugen Tenshin village.
Kasumi, in the meantime, has approached Terry and has warned him of the impending battle ahead. Luckily for Terry it seems that fortune is on his side, as he recruits two men who has several run-ins with the Mugen Tenshin boss and his Hajinmon half-sister.
Kyo Kusanagi and Iori Yagami, at Terry's request, has placed their blood feud on hold to work together once again, after kicking Ash Crimson's buttocks to the moon and restoring both Iori and Chizuru's respective powers.
The battle takes place before the King of Fighters tournament. The three ninjas versus KOF's hard-hitting veterans. Kasumi is watching this battle from the sidelines, incognito.
