I found it intresting that when he is in his chamber a robot puts his helmet back on (ESB) In Rotj he asks his son to take it off
why cant he do it himself ??
Tangible God
Hmmmmm, interesting question.
Maybe it's due to the fact that in ROTJ, he's DIEING and needed his son to drag him all the way to the hangar bay.
And in ESB, well... when you've already got a specially made pressure chamber suited just for you, why NOT have a mechanical arm to put your helmet on?
Darth Subjekt
They actually talk about it in SW Insider, 100th edition or whatever its called. It only allows machines to help. Something about him being "more machine than man." Huh, who'da thunk it...
queeq
Maybe it's just because it looks cool.

luke said if i take it off u will die thats why he uses the chamber plus fans thought vader was a robot thats why he takes it on and of in ESB

I suppose that fried scalp can be very itchy? Even painful?
Supar Robobots with infrared aiming zystems and all the other shit must be way more accurate in helmet lowering than two artificial limbs ever could hope to be.
In addition, they could not find a suitable adjutant for the task. Three previous ones were strangled due to their incompetence.
queeq
In ESB he only takes off the helmet, not the mask.
K-Dog
Is there any explanation of why he needs a helmet and mask? Does regular air hurt him or something? I know it is fiction and all but what does he actually need it? Is he like a vampire and light will fry him? He still needs to breathe oxygen doesn't he? Maybe he's like the kid in the bubble and his immune system is really weak and germs will make him meet his doom. I have another theory that he just pretends he needs it to make himself more mysterious to the ladies.

What if...
All of his skin and most of his muscle-mass has been burned badly. The guy is pretty much walking around with several pounds of dead flesh and skin.
To prevent it from decaying, his helmet has a nice vacuum. With no oxygen, the bacteria are having a hard time decomposing his flesh. His own chamber has pretty much the same function. He has a breathing tube in his throat, so he will need no external oxygen anyway.

I demand to see Anakins medical papers.
His diagnosis. The head-droids ID who operated him.
Palpatines statements. His insurance policy.
Those documents are needed for me to win this debate.
"
Vader's life support system included a chest-worn, computerized control panel unit that regulated his respiratory functions. Three slot like dataports offered diagnostic checks of his pulmonary, respiratory and neural systems. On his belt, Vader wore two small system function boxes. The one on his right featured a temperature regulation system. On his left, he wore a respiratory sensor matrix. The center buckle featured an audio enhancement
unit built into the electromagnetic clasp
"
And so on and so on...

Where'd you get that?
Sounds like an iron lung to me.

In ROTJ he was dying and plus he had one hand so...yeah, would be kinda hard. I wonder if he had insurance...
queeq
He didn't have a hand anyway. Just a joystick.
Sesse
New theory:
Ever wondered why he made that heavy breathing sound?
He actually had one of those "blow this to move" jokes infront of his mouth. So whenever he wanted to move, he would just blow the thing. Sadly the imperial engineers forgot about the two active microphones...

luke said if i take it off u will die thats why he uses the chamber plus fans thought vader was a robot thats why he takes it on and of in ESB the reason why vader needs the mask is pretty much the same reason why people with lung disease or that cant breath right need oxygen tanks, so when luke took it off he couldnt breath.....i knew that even the first time i watched ESB like when i was 5
an to answer your earlier question vader was in extreme pain and shock and was basically having surgery done on him while he was awake, let alone that he just got a new arm and two legs soething that takes longer than a minute to get used to, so the medic droids did it for him. and it RotJ he only has one arm and is in fact dying, he cant walk and can hardly breath with the mask on which means he was to weak to take it off so luke did
coolmovies
cant he use force to take it off ?
Tangible God
That's like asking can't use the force to perform every single menial task in life? He probably could, but what's the point if you've got machines to do it all for you?
queeq
Plus it gave the nice, and more important, intimate moment between father and son. Which was the real issue of that scene. Scenes should not be crafted on logic but on dramatic purposes: in other words hwat's the scene really saying.
Just make the illogical not too illogical that it gets annoying.
The big EH
i prefer to have people do logical things (under the circumstances that is) like if somebody is using a horse as cover during a gunfight, shoot the horse and it'll fall on top of the person
queeq
Maybe it falls the other way.
