This thread is for Ares, an old god who's learned new tricks. As you will see, his is a complicated psyche. He makes bad jokes:
http://img140.imageshack.us/my.php?image=wonderwoman8209vg7.jpg

But he loves his family:
http://img519.imageshack.us/my.php?image=warofthegods0334xw3.jpg
http://img101.imageshack.us/my.php?image=warofthegods0417xb0.jpg

And every so often, he comes-up with a genuinely good line:
http://img172.imageshack.us/my.php?image=warofthegods0223ig5.jpg

Mostly though, we'll come to know him as perhaps the one character in fiction to take a vow of non-interference and still stay interesting. That, at-least, should deserve your respect.

Aside from a few minor cosmetic changes, this thread is an exact copy of my SHC one. As always, thanks go to ImageShack for free image hosting. References should be found in the URL addresses. Let me know if anything's missing, or if there's anything else wrong with the coding.

How do you become the God of Conflict, and what faith looks like to a god:

Facilitating that meeting is Ares' visit to Paradise Island, a feat the Amazons thought beyond him, blessing a weapon and keeping it on the island against the gods' interdiction:

Right or wrong about Ares specifically, Paradise Island is warded against teleportation, as this scene, taking place after it had already fallen from the sky, explains:

As is the Themysciran Embassy. Note Circe must cover her eyes before facing Medusa. Contrast this with Ares' behaivour in the following scans:

So you've been looking for an angle to bring Zeus down, and, conspiring with Athena, you think you've found it. That doesn't mean you shouldn't warn him first. It's not like it really matters, and you may get an invite to run Hades' armies for it. (For clarity's sake, Athena was likely already aware and involved in this at this stage):

Ares Buchanan quickly took control of all arms-trade in Boston, putting policemen, DAs, and even one of the city's two super-heroes on his pay-role, and making full use of STAR Labs contacts to flood the city with weapons, and equip himself with everything from mind-grapplers to portable contained singularity devices.

He also had the perceptions of a demigod: "He could see through any disguise. Unless she magically transformed herself... Hid the truth so deeply that even she forgot it."

Alright, so no-one's ever going to be able to say Genesis was a good crossover. Or that they're sure they got the ending.. But Ares' plot actually made a lot more sense than similar "take over the universe" schemes. He'd been preparing over ages to exploit a natural phenomena all gods could have potentially been aware of, but none had properly observed, then wormed his way into a union to protect the universe, again relying on greater understanding of events than even Metron's or Highfather's, knowing Zeus and Jove will be merged once inside The Source, and finally killing Highfather and very nearly fully carrying-out his plans:

"-Ares! Are you certain it was he?

Forgive what may seem boasting, Hera, but who else among the gods has the power to fell Herakles with a single blow?"

I feel dirty mentioning it, since Ares caught him by surprise, but Herakles did fight the Doomsday clone alongside Wonder Woman.

Mars uses Metron and Desaad as dupes to re-merge with Ares, freeing him from the Source Wall. To do so, he takes the form and metabolism of a Promethean Giant, a being "whose outstretched hands could span a solar system". Meeting on a planet four-million times the mass of the Earth, each minute that passes for them means a hundred-million years to us.

Now, I know what you're thinking; "do they really make planets that big?", and as far as I know, there's currently no basis to believe that they do. Nevertheless, here we are:

Wonder Womans's first confrontation with Ares has often been used to demonstrate his power. Truthfully, I'm not sure how good it really makes him look. In his home realm and facing an already grievously wounded Wonder Woman, it doesn't necessarily reflect that highly on his strength. See the first two scans for what I mean:

Gods of Gotham was something of a throwback in terms of Ares' portrayal, and as you may by now be noticing, family has always been a bit of a weak-spot for him. The plot revolved around Phobos bringing his siblings Eris and Deimos back from the dead, and possessing mortal criminals in an attempt to turn Gotham into Areopagus and regain their father's favour.

While perhaps not his finest moment, do note that Eris had been fortifying Ivy's poisons with her own power. Deimos'd done similar to the Joker's earlier in the story, in order to effect Wonder Woman with it:
http://img139.imageshack.us/my.php?image=wonderwoman167pg06th1.jpg
http://img205.imageshack.us/my.php?image=wonderwoman167pg07lm0.jpg

Forcibly removing his children's souls (other than Phobos') from their mortal hosts, and sentencing them all to the afterlife, seemingly with little effort. Afterwhich he offers his power to the small congregation of parishioners, and finally destroys the makeshift Areopagus:

The latest issue of Wonder Woman featured godly (or "God Made", as the text referred to them) weapons extensively. Not, in the strictest sense, having anything at all to do with Ares in particular, this type of subject matter would probably fit more closely under a more generic topic. Then again, I don't have one of those, and these scans are certainly relevant to Ares.

The weapons were gifted to Hippolyta's personal bodyguard upon taking their oaths, so assuming such distinctions apply at all here, they're unlikely to represent the very best arms at the Gods' disposal.

To recap: Wonder Woman is surprised to find herself targeted with arrows that can pierce her skin and catch her unawares. She describes the pain as blinding or "Otherwordly", and at one point is knocked unconscious by a club strike after taking several stab wounds (see also the way Charis(?) frees herself from WW's lasso). Finally, she notes that breaking such arms is beyond her power, and resorts to using one to break another.

In the interest of full disclosure, Philipus (seen in the first page scanned) was well enough to confront the same group again that very night.

Apparently, Ares's had more power-ups than Superman. Here he draws the last demons of Pandora's Box into his own body, gaining "the ultimate power of destruction", or somesuch. In the process, he also demonstrates he can fly: (For completeness' sake, I've again included the entire scene. Ares himself only appears in the last couple of pages.)

Hmm, I don't think I like this modern Ares. He looks pretty gay with that stupid haircut and no shirt. I think DC should bring back that Ares who was 500' tall, wearing that armor and you couldn't see his face except two red eyes. Much more godlike.

Does anyone happen to know if Ares has healing powers? If he does, what level of healing are we talking about?

Lol are you serious? Do you know how they defined god originally? I'll give you a hint, Greek gods weren't around 500 ft tall how the F big do you think the titans were? Marvel certainty didn't make Ares godlike though but 500ft? Thats titan like if any of them made Ares correctly he'd probably loose one or two fights, never worked for Osborn and be one of the deadliest fighters right under champion. He have and arsenal of weapons and be pretty damn good with them no matter what he had. Even Thor could thor a piece of rock with the force of a comet, he's the god of thunder. Imagine what Ares could do with a piece of rock if he was written correctly?
