For my closest of family in friends, I would do whatever it takes except those that violate my ethics. I would rather them die, and they most likely would also, than to do something that would force me to violate my basic ethics.

I don't know, and I don't think many of us do until we're put into a situation that will make us do something, or not act at all. I once dived into a raging sea to drag my sister out, there was no thinking about it, just instinct.

Funny thing is, most people have a code of ethics that looks down on letting people that you "love" be killed.

Strange, I'd quite happily break a wrist or a leg for a stranger's life. The enemy thing is quite disturbing as well, probably over emphasised, though.

It depends on factors involved.

If I could safe someone and they definitely needed my help, I'd possibly do it if the situation was in reasonable control. For example, I would maybe save someone from drowning because the water isn't going to turn around and stab me. It's not worth losing two lives, and I'm a strong swimmer so it's not without a measure of control. If it was some whitewater river, I'd get help, cos to dive in would be irresponsible.

Muggings or whatever, not likely. No random person is worth me getting stabbed or killed, or being in any situation where my own death could be added to theirs.
