Wonder what Sumo Wrestler's are going to do.

I just don't see many Asians overweight besides sumo wrestlers who obviously do it on purpose.

As soon as I read the first sentence, I knew this was the real issue. I think it's a great idea, personally. But can only imagine the backlash if something like this were to happen in America. There would be riots in the streets and stampeding, snorting, grease sucking bull-sized people crashing up the steps of capitol hill.
Not to mention that the pharmecutical lobby would never allow it to happen since it pretty much owns the government and makes it's money off keeping America fat and sick.

It seems a little unnecessary for the country which already has things like workplace calisthenics and the highest life expectancy in the world...
They should probably focus more on reducing smoking rates (half of adult males smoke).

My first thought. They probably just want to keep setting records (or more likely it's a money issue like DK said).

Government telling you how you should eat.....perfect...

As far as I can tell, they're not making you, just educating you n how to be healthier.
Just curious, how many here wouldn't make Japan's cut?
I'm a 32.
WrathfulDwarf
Then why call it a "law"?
xmarksthespot
After a quick check I found Japan apparently has the lowest obesity rate (~3%) in the industrialized world according to 2007 OECD report. Also has the lowest prevalence of heart disease. This seems entirely redundant...
Devil King
Maybe they want to keep it that way.
edit: But as the article says, perhaps the more intelligent way to manage costs is to educate against smoking.

My pants say 76, but I'm pretty sure it's in cm - since the last time I checked I fit through a door. Although I'm not sure whether pants are designed to fit hips or waist...
Also it's a bit more than just educating for a healthier populace, when they intend to incur financial penalties on companies.

When you say you're a 32, are you referring to your waist?

I'm a 32.
Im a 32, and according to the BMI chart (http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/) have a BMI reading of: 18.5
Meaning, in the Western World, I'm literally on the line between underweight and normal weight, and in Japan, I'm a pant size away from being obese...

table comparing BMI to waist size and comparing it with risk of disease associated with obesity.
For us Westerners, a man with a waist less than 40inches needs a BMI over 25.0 to be at increased risk for disease
Bardock42
I feel that neither BMI nor waist size are a particularly good measure of how overweight or underweight and in particular how healthy someone is.

overweight/underweight maybe, as that seems statistical or at least moderatly empirical
health? no. Fat people can be extremely healthy

I'm 25.2, so according to the BMI, I'm overweight. Odd thing is, I can see my abs and nothing jiggles. I wouldn't put much stock in the BMI, it doesn't factor in muscle/fat mass.
Edit: Or see Xmark's post above.

I guess if you define over and underweight by BMIs though that at least makes some sense.Originally posted by xmarksthespot

I'm not telling you to. I don't put too much stock in the Japanese guidelines either.
The big joke of it was that I am both underweight and obese depending on which country I'm in

Ya, I'm not trying to make any overarching claims about what the BMI is capable of. Clearly individual differences will outweight any type of generalization when it comes to humans.

A horrible government intrusion, but if the Japanese have no problem with it, then let them do whatever they want.
I'm a 32, and I'm in the military, so I get weighed all the time to make sure I'm in standards. But when I get out, if I want to be 250 lbs with a 44" waist, then leave me alone.

I'm a 32. I'm between 36 and 38. It varies depending on the brand.

Me too.
Doesn't it suck when a label changes it's standards and suddenly a 30 sags on you? That's one aspect of the disposable income based western economy that really grinds my gears. As soon as a brand becomes marketable, they change their sizing so the fat-ass American public can fit into their product and model their label. Hollister jeans and button-downs used to fit me, but now I swim in their jeans and their shirts come down to my ****ing knees.

Yeah, that actually does really piss me off. The most annoying thing is that I could get the clothes I buy for half the price online, but the sizes are too f*cking unpredictable.

Well, as I can honestly tell you, a handfull of trustworthy tailors are worth far more than any brand you run across. Banana Republic used to fit me; Express used to fit me and Hollister used to fit me. Find a good tailor and just accept that you'll have to mark up the product to consider the enevitable cutter price. Triple Five Soul has proven to be a very good label for me. Their sizes haven't changed and it's current. How long that will last? Depends upon their level of success. I'm sure they'll switch to the American box-cut standards once their label really takes off.

That's also the first thing I wondered. But it won't really be a problem, since they only wear their custom-fitted mawashi and kimono. When I was in Japan, I saw a few in public, and none of them wore a t-shirt & jeans or a suit & tie.

I'm 5'11" with a 32" waist. I'm average. That's a big difference from being 5'4" with a 32" waist.
I also liked how women's waists are allowed to be larger. So Japan like's the fat girls?
we should do this in America. This country is overrun by fat, lazy people who only want to eat, watch tv, sleep and go to the doctor to treat ailments caused by them being fat and lazy.
dadudemon
Indeed...visceral and subcutaneous abdominal fats are in the unhealthy or risky category for humans. They have been correlated in multiple studies to heart attacks and Type II diabetes.(And other things.)
Reducing the size of one's waist primarily through lypolysis* (fat burning) IF the person as what medical professionals would call "excessive abdominal fat" is a good thing. If Japan is making these people go to the doctor, the doctor can determine whether or not these people fall into the "excessive abdominal fat" category.
DK hit it right on the head when he wrote that the pharmaceutical companies want Americans to stay fat. A lot of people don't realize(or don't want to realize) that some conspiracy theories are true.
My waist is about 33 inches. I have also weighed a steady 207-208 every morning (buck naked) for the last 4 weeks. I could stand to lose about 10 lbs of nothing but fat...but I don't look bad at all right now.
*A decrease in your waist size when the major components are BOTH fat-loss and muscular atrophy is not very healthy. You need a strong core for various and obvious reasons. Just starving yourself could actually cause your bodyfat percentage to increase as muscles "go" quicker when we starve. Fat mobilization seems to be harder than gluconeogenesis for our bodies.
