Starbucks is tanking.

You've probably heard the recent news that Starbucks is closing down a bunch of their shops. Personally I love their coffee, and thier iced cold beverages, but I think they bit off a bit more than they could chew. What do you guys think?

KidRock
I agree, I think they went too far away from what they are good at: Coffee.

For the record I have never actually tried starbucks..or dunkin donuts for that matter, not a coffee drinker, but I hear their stuff is really good.

lord xyz
No. Starbucks is ace!

=Tired Hiker=
I like both Starbucks and Dunkin a lot. Recently Starbucks changed their house blend to a lighter coffee, Pike's Place, which is still rather strong. They gave some spiel about how they are going back to their Seattle roots, yadda yadda yadda. I think it was just a way to save money i.e., lighter coffee is cheaper to make. Now with the closing of their stores I wonder what they will do next to stay in business, maybe reduce prices a bit since gasoline costs so much? Hey, there's an idea.

Quiero Mota
Who cares?

Coffee was long regarded as a manly drink...and then Starbucks came along.

WrathfulDwarf
I like Starbucks. I think this is a good move at this time. Too many locations are just not needed. What really is killing them is the competition and the quality from other places. You can get a very decent cup of joe from any 7/11 or even local gas stations that sell gourmet coffees.

I personally gave up on the local coffee and donuts places because their coffees is twice a shit as other places. You rarely see them brewing a pot during certain hours of the day. Their coffee is not always fresh. I also gave up on over pretentious coffee houses that play fiddle when the subject of a new Starbucks comes out. They critique Starbucks but at the same time they employ the same sales tactics as Starbucks themselves. Don't get me wrong..Starbucks can be A-holes. But the little guys can sometimes play the hypocrite game quite well.

Grand_Moff_Gav
I think they spread too far to fast...and considering how expensive they are...however I imagine they will survive.

KharmaDog
Whoever thought that a company could go out of business selling overpriced coffee? I mean really...what a shocker.

Schecter
starbucks has the shittiest coffee. dunkin donuts will never go out of business. why? great coffee.

AngryManatee
Well that's what they get for having multiple Starbucks within seeing/ walking distance of each other. I think I remember hearing that there's at least 100 of them hear just in Austin city limits. Absurd.

Blax_Hydralisk
I blame Schecter and our public school systems for this.

I must say, I love Starbucks, before work I grab a coffee almost every single morning, however they are located everywhere - there are too many stores too close together.

Besides, they're feeling credit crunch just like everyone else

Ya Krunk'd Floo
Starbucks messes with my mind. When I buy a cup, it is steaming hot, but only a short time later it becomes cold. Is that on purpose, or am I imagining it?

Anyway, I like a nice, strong black coffee that I can chew on. Things like Mocha Mango Frappocino and the like make me want to fight. Also, why don't they just call them small, medium and large. These are the reasons they are probably reducing the number of their shops.

Long time, no see, brother. As for your question, it was me who thought that a company could go out of business by selling overpriced coffee. It was me.

ragesRemorse
well, when you have more stores than the amount of product you sell it's hard to make a profit.

Their coffee really isn't that good. Don't get me wrong, i like their vanilla latte's as much as the next guy, but at $4 a cup it is not something i enjoy on a regular basis.

I knew I heard it somewhere before. I thought it might have been in my own head, but with all those voices up there it does get confusing.

Starbucks is awesome,

they have a shop on every block for a reasonlaughing out loud

Bardock42
Meh, they are okay, I've been in maybe 5 or 6 of them in different countries and...they just aren't that special...personally I think their success is mostly their style, similar to iPods (though those are still kinda sweet).

Quiero Mota
I really have no idea why they're so popular. They charge you up the ass for some something you can at home for free. Not only that, when you look at the ingredients of many of the drinks, the percentage of actual coffee isn't that much.

And that reason would be greed. Of course, I don't think there'll be a "shop on every block" for long.

Well, some of their drinks are clearly intended to only be slightly coffee flavoured, so I get that, I suppose. Still...I don't know what Starbucks actually offers that I can't have anywhere else, including my home for much less money at about the same, if not better standard. I guess laptops with douchebags attached to them....but who the **** wants that?

"Muscle out" probably mostly means that jackasses (90% of the population) rather go there for shallow reasons making it hard for more old fashioned coffee shops to survive.

Still kinda sad to see, I suppose.

They want a monopoly on coffee outlets. It's the same thing Wal-Mart does to small businesses.

When it comes to coffee chains: Late For the Train > Starbucks.

jaden101
well i can proudly say that i've never bought anything from or even been in a startbucks at any point in 29 years of life...and nor will i ever go in a starbucks ever

i even refused to go meet a woman i knew because she wanted to meet in a starbucks

i hate the entire coffee shop "culture" and shit corporate americanisation of my country...i hate everything that starbucks and the saying "oh-my-god" represents....

i hope they all burn to the ground

wow...that started off reasonably pleasant and just ended up full of hatred...i even surprised myself with that

chithappens

They are just way closer to achieving it.

I don't like coffee, so don't really go in there. However, when I do, it's full of some of the most annoying, pretentious tossers I've ever come across.

I don't completely hate Starbucks. I don't go there for coffee, I mean, why bother? If you want a nice cup of coffee, that's cheap and decent, go somewhere else.

Might as well get a Frap or something if you are at Starbucks.

Haven't been to one in years though, that shit is expensive.

Starbucks is the most convenient place to get coffee when I'm at school, no question.

Another caricature that should've been on that list are people who just go to play boardgames. And not just Starbucks, at private coffee shops I've seen people who play backgammon and never buy coffee.

I know its less than 2 bucks for a large plain black, but not wanting to give any money to the company is the bottom line.

And if you want coffee on the go, Sonic and Krispy Kreme both have better coffee (hot or cold) than Starbucks.

I think Starbucks and Caribou Coffee are about the same in flavor. I have not tried Sonic coffee yet. And when I want coffee on the go, there's always a Starbucks very close by. I can't say that about Sonic or Krispy Kreme.

Plutonic_Hat90

Crystal Meth is cheaper!

Doom and Gloom
I buy Lattes and a lot of my coffee beans at Starbucks, I like the selection and the quality. I've tried several of their competitors and none could offer the same quality. Two of the stores are closing in my immediate area (within 5 miles). That still leaves about 10.

chillmeistergen
The nearest one to me is about 30 miles away. I have to put up with the pretentious twats at Costa instead, they're a much worse breed.

There shouldn't be much doubt that it's good coffee, I just rather save money when I go to a coffee shop and Starbucks doesn't really allow that.
