Jews in Comic books....WHAT?

So I'm having a thought there (hard to believe isn't it?)

We have Superman whose origin is based on the Hebrew story of Moses.

Then we have Jack Kirby whose parents were Jews. You guys know the impact he has in the industry.

There is the powerful villain Magneto....and Quicksilver.

I'm thinking....how can Comic books be influence by religion? Most part of comics are strongly based on technology and science. But there is room for religion. Clearly the most powerful characters such as Pre-crisis Darkseid and Galactus use extensive unimaginable technology to reach incredible powers. But...they still below rank that unknown force as The Prescense and TOAA.

Is this Kabbalah?

Feel free to comment....(if you think I'm just out my mind say it anyways)

....

I'm not under the influence of anything.

Thoughts. mmm

Don't forget the Spectre, his creator Jerry Siegel was also Jewish.

And yeah, the very concept of the Spectre has a lot to do with Kabbalah.

Symmetric Chaos
The Thing -- Jewish character that is hideously malformed while his non-semetic allies come through relatively unscathed.
Magneto -- Jewish supervillain.
Bedlam -- Jewish character named after a famous insane asylum.
CaptainRectitude -- Jewish character with an extremely stupid sounding name.
Arsenic -- Jewish character named after a deadly poison.

hmm Marvel hates the Jews.

Marvel also has Moon Knight, Kitty Pryde, and Sabra in the Hebrew department. An attractive set of characters, I'd say.

(Even though Moon Knight is disturbed and worships an Egyptian God, losing Yid marks for that big grin )

Most religions are represented at least by a few characters. Though most, even if they have an affiliation, don't really play a factor in stories.

Superman can easily be analogous to Jesus as well, or various other pagan mythologies. To say his origin story is Jewish is to look at it only from one perspective.

Comics generally aren't religious, nor do they have overt religious overtones. We could always find exceptions, but religion is on the fringes of nearly any character, not at the heart of who they are. Besides, the demographic that comics appeals to is largely secularist society (because, let's be honest, our culture isn't religious in nature, it is secular and materialistic, despite various affiliations), so there's no need to highlight religion.

DC goes so far as to have their own version of heaven, hell, and various deities. It vaguely resembles monotheistic religions of the world, but of course deviates heavily from them to serve their stories. I see it as filling the "abstract" group of character more so than making a religious statement.

Obviously there's more to it than that, Red. PM me if you want. We'll re-hash stuff I've already forgotten from your past.

Also, this thread is legit discussion, but I'm watching it closer than most for obvious reasons. If you have an issue with it, state what it is.

I would agree with Digi here but I will also take note that originally Superman was more in the Hebrew mythology prior to the Christian one.

Sure, Superman died and resurrected and came back to fight evil. But this could be taken more in the realm of a El Cid Campeador (google him or wikipedia him) and you'll notice the resemblence.

I think Superman has come to embrace both Jewish and Christian stories quite well.

After all..the "S" could stand for "Savior" wink

Or Superdick.

But you've touched on the overlap between many religious and/or mythological stories, WD. Superman, the only one of his kind, was sent by his father from the heavens to learn from and watch over the people of earth. He performs miraculous feats and derives his power from the light of the world, the sun. He is also killed and reborn.

Actually, if we're doing a percentage thing with similarities, the Egyptian god Horus might come closest, whose father was the literal incarnation of the sun, and whose story coincides with most of that other stuff also. But it's hard not to see the Jesus parallels as well.

I can't wait for him to go crazy and try to castrate Luthor or ejaculate on some lettuce and trick Zod into eating it . . .

Actually I'm starting to prefer the potentials of the Jesus parallel more and more crazy

Just read Magneto testament. Great issue.
