Buddy draws his powers from the morphogenic field, or the "Red", which links all animals that have ever existed on Earth.

Prior to his powerup part way through his series, and then a later on in 52, he needed to be close-ish to these animals (more on this power up later).

This is an important set of scans (from the DC event 52).

If you read Buddy's origin, you'll know that those are the same aliens that originally gave him his powers- and they mention that they've now upgraded him.

Buddy now has access to the Universe's morphogenetic field, allowing him to tap into the powers of any animal that has lived in the entire DCU.

He kicks things off with a bang by stealing the solar battery, maps and teleporting abilities of a Sun Eater.

I think he should be upgraded to a higher tier soon.

Perhaps McDuffie should have read this. If I remember correctly, it's mentioned in JLA that he's now stuck to using alien species, probably because of Anansi.

I saw it mentioned in the JLA that Anansi's messing with Buddy and Vixen, and I know what's up with Vixen's powers, but... I might have missed something, or might not have the latest issue.
