I recently had a daughter, and I decided to learn a second language and teach her as well. My wife knows a little german from taking a college course so we decided to learn german. I ordered Rosetta Stone and so far I really enjoy it.
Anyone else learning a new language? Or maybe you already know a few! I'd love to hear about it.

Well, at least that's what they said about our first Chancellor.

I actually bought Rosetta Stone to learn some Italian before going to Italy to study abroad for a semester. Before, I only knew some French... the program was helpful... but living in a country is the best way to learn... especially for me because I lived with an Italian host family so I had to learn.
Stick with it though... that's awesome!

I think that's usually really just Japanese.
Mandarin on the other hand is the most widely spoken language in the world (except maybe English) and incidentally also that spoken by the current world power (yeah, lets not kid ourselves, kay?)

But is Mandarin spoken in every corner of the globe like English and Spanish is, or is it only found in bulk in China? It seems that its the most spoken only because there's so damn many of them, not because they went on overseas conquests in the 1500 and 1600's.

But if you take the bulk of spanish speaking countries that are dirt poor...and dirty, you aren't left with that much.

if we take Japan as an example, we see that emerging markets need to adopt the dominant language of trade, and not vice versa. Chinese buisnuss will likely need to adopt English to be successful

I'm taking German in highschool. My German teacher knows like 6 different languages though, she's pretty much the smartest woman I know. Anyway, I always wondered if Rosetta Stone actually works.

Rosetta Stone so far has been great. The only somewhat frustrating thing about it in my opinion is that you don't get any explanations on anything. It is up to you to learn...., but so far I've figured everything out. I think the fact that it makes you try harder to figure things out makes it stick better. I also like the Audio Companion that I got with my version. I listen to it and immediately remember the words and what they mean....all with no translation. Then again I am only on the beginning levels , so far though I love it.

I' m fluent in Dutch, French and English, have moderate knowledge of German and notions of Spanish.

Why is Mandarin the most useful language to teach someone... for me it's useless anyway.
Not moi, never felt the urge to learn Japanese.
I studied German at school and for exams, and now I have forgotten most of it but would probably get by if I was dropped in Germany.
I get along fine with French but take me to the more rural areas down south of France where a lot speak a hell of a lot faster, then I would more or less be lost...
