It was back in summer 2001, when I finally bought a player. Think the first movies I rented were Enemy At The Gates & Titan A.E.
I think the first DVD I bought was The Phantom Menace( along with several others), when it came out that fall.

For all the debate about the money spent on DVDs vs. buying Blu-ray, and is it worth it - I was buying laserdiscs back in the 90's, where the price on a new release could be anywhere from $40 to $90 & up. I only bought a dozen of them because they cost so much, but I wanted to watch movies letterboxed in their true format(VHS did that infrequently.) And the picture quality was vastly better than VHS; DVD was a bit better, but much smaller & more interactive & cost the same as VHS! I was in heaven for years.
Now, until DVD is obsolete, I'm sticking with it.

That was the first one I bought as well, in October 2001 when it was released for the first time. I had only gotten my first DVD player back in August.

I have no regrets; even if it is No. 6 of the six films, I had to have the complete collection.

derekwc
When I first got a DVD player, I bought Star Trek Insurrection (bare bones) and Strangeland along with it.

I bought my first DVD back in 2003 from ColumbiaHouse. I think it was Bruce Almighty or Ocean's Eleven.

Rhovanion
Don't Say A Word back in 2002.

The Goonies was the reason I bought a DVD player though. I desperately wanted to see the film again but it wasn't available on VHS in Sweden. It was, however, out on DVD and so I went and bought me a DVD player. I had already ordered Don't Say A Word on VHS but hadn't received it yet so I emailed the online store and asked if they could change the order to a DVD version instead, and there you go.

Scarlet315
Heroes season 1

G Morrow
Scream. The first one. My brother was an early adopter and bought a DVD player and the first Austin Powers in... 1997(?), and bought AP since it was the most interesting DVD on sale at the time. It blew my mind and ruined me for "standard" DVD menus and barebones releases. When I finally got my own player a year or so later, I got Scream, which, while a fine enough release, had a one-second delay on the menus which still bothers me.

Have a good day.
