I think I could tolerate a remake...But this? THIS???!!?!?! What is Smith thinking??

Looks horrible. I think Smith will earn even more negative points from me. I already dislike him immensly.

Will's an idiot. If he wants his kid to be famous, there's a better way to launch him to stardom than ruining a classic. There's no need to remake Karate Kid. Would anyone remake Terminator or Rocky? Well, ok, maybe in 50 years or so, but this is just ridiculous! I'm picturing Bison from the American Street Fighter cartoon saying, "Yesh! Yesh!" How that relates to this, I'll never know.

MildPossession
Will Smith doing ANOTHER remake(even if he isn't in it)... first it was Oldboy.

ragesRemorse
i always liked Will Smith because he didn't shove his political, socialistic, religious or economic views down my throat (in his movie's, atleast wink ) He always took advantage of every opportunity that came his way while giving at least a decent performance and every now and again he would pursue a more deeper role that hints towards real acting ability. His movie's are usually more or less fun. I always looked at him getting his family involved in his movies as a quaint and, stand-up thing to do. This, however, is a bit much for me to swallow.

Why not just write an original Karate Kid story? It isn't very hard to write a story using the Karate Kid formula, many movie's have been doing it since the original. Why does Will Smith suddenly need a Marquee name like Karate Kid to back his name? Is his name not big enough to gain interest? No, he has no idea of what he wants to do because he doesnt want to do anything different. It is a cheap way to further his career whilst building his sons'. It's another safe move that will result in another mediocre and most likely, forgettable movie.

I'm a supporter of remakes but Karate Kid is one of the few movie's that still holds up in every way. It is a simple little story that struck a chord with a lot of people. Wasn't an atrocious third installment and a pathetic revamp enough? ****, Mr Myogi would be so pissed.

Just thought of this..

Since Jayden is portraying Daniel Russo(if the name is kept), is Will going to play Mr. Miyagi??? laughing laughing laughing laughing

I wouldn't be the least surprised!

A huge fail and total shit. The worst thing Will has ever done and might be the start for a spiral down wards in his career.

Beyonce wants to be Wonder Woman and now this. What else crap can people think up now?

Make his his dad still but put Samuel Jackson for this role.

The original Karate Kid movies mean nothing to me so Will Smith can do with it, and to it, what ever he wants. I only get offended when my personal interests and sensabilities are involved in a remake or rip off.

This isn't going to help his son's popularity in the least he's going to be a highly disliked human being and will be bashed all over the world.

Also I never even knew Will's son had any martial arts skills

Pat Morita is immortal as Mr. Miyagi. Chan is legend, too, but Miyagi is Morita's role.

And why in the Hell is his name Mr. Han now?

I just adored the hip hop score. no expression

I'm happy its taking things from a different perspective. If it were nearly shot by shot the same (see Omen remake), it would serve no purpose at all.

Well King Kong (2005) had bout the same scenes as the old one and also added and that was a good movie.

It was about twice as long, so it was clearly far from shot-for-shot, eve if some scenes were. I'm inclined to disagree about the good movie part, too. Rarely have I seen something so repetitive and with such grotesque over-reliance on slow motion. Then again, I haven't seen 300.

Agreed, how does that work? They should of set it in Japan if the movie is called the Karate Kid. I know you can learn karate anywhere but they go to beijing he'll be learning kung fu.

Rogue Jedi
Jackie Chan does Chinese Kung Fu right?

why not just have Ralph machio be the teacher now? I guess that would be to good of an idear.

Alpha Centauri
A good idea would be to not make another one and to realise that people probably only like it because of nostalgia.

That would be an idea, and you could have him living in Japan with his HOT wife, the Japanese chick from the 2nd movie. she is still acting and was in JAG and stargate atlantis for a while.

WickedDynamite
Seen the trailer..

No contest! This remake will blow away the 80s version in the Martial Arts dept.

So, yeah this remake looks good on the fighting side. Story wise...we will see.

I'm sure we could come up with something better. I don't understand why hollywood has run out of ideas? why can't they just let some things go? It's like rebooting spiderman. Seriously?? its only been 9 years since the first one, and even though i wasn't that fussy for any of the films, they were ok but they said they want to appeal to a younger audiance?? WTF! just carry on but get rid of kirsten dump.

This seems quite different, daniels black, he likes a chinese girl...he's fighting a chinese dude and the whole thing is in china...it looks good, I'm not gonna lie but when its all over I reckon I'll still prefer the original but who knows...might surprise me...I like surprises

Plus it should be called Kung-Fu kid as thats what he's doing, he's not doing karate

With the whole training part I can see the new catch phrase. Jacket off, jacket on, jacket off, jacket on, jacket off, jacket on!

We had an Asian teacher at my old school, she told someone to take their jacket off and when she said 'jacket off' the whole class looked at her and was like 'what?' was quite...interesting to say the least

WhiskeyGirl
I think it looks awesome. I Was worried at first, but after I saw the preview I think it'll be pretty cool.

I think it has something to do with the writing of the stories.

In the original Mr. Miyagi and Daniel discuss about the origins of Karate and somewhere in the dialog Daniel mentions about Shaolin Temples. Miyagi scorns him by saying "you watch too much tv" something around those lines. Then mentioning martial arts comes from Japan.

(I have to see the scene again to make sure)

Well, I think the writing in this remake seems to mock the elements of the original. Notice how Jackie jest the infamous fly catching scene with the chopsticks. I get the feeling this remake will take some jabs at the original (no pun intended)

Good read about the film. This film had some politic (local people) issues, China wanted the movie this way and US wanted it that way etc..

RE: Blaxican
I thought the movie was excellent, as good as, if not better, than the original.

Most people in the world don't even like Jaden Smith's Like Mike movies. Why on earth is he being starred in a remake to one of the best films ever? This is insulting the fans everywhere. Even the star to the original Karate Kid has mixed feelings about this.

Also, let's simmer down on calling the Karate kid "one of the best films ever". It was a good movie, i have the dvd, but the hyperbole is a little much.

Movie was entertaining. I loved the line by the angry mom: "PICK UP YO JACKET!!!" I think she should've screamed that at him every chance she was on camera after she said it, I laughed pretty hard due to an inside joke some friends and I have with a nearby lady who constnatly yells random things.

I thought the little title debate was obvious but, I guess not. It's suppose to be a remake so, it makes sense to keep the original title; however, in China the movie is known as The Kung Fu Kid. I liked the movie and it was better than the original.

RE: Blaxican
I agree. I liked it better than the original.

However, I wasn't born when the original came out, so, I don't have the nostalgia blinding me and making me biased.

Dude, he's 11.

I say "child" actor, meaning I'm not comparing him by the same measure as I would Gary Oldman or Jeff Bridges. He's a shitty child actor, unlike Haley Joel Osment or Tantum O'Neil.

He tries way too hard to be his father and he comes off as a whiny little ***** most times.
