I hope the stench from the Sly Stallone-Danny Cannon misfire has cleared by now...
If Danny Boyle personally directs, that's a plus.

Thats because it most likely will..
Not every film from the '80's or '90's need a sequel/reboot/reimagining..
Just because films do doesn't mean that the current one will be better..

Judge Dredd could be a great movie if it wasn't made all stupid and cheesy. Wait for Darren to finish up robocop and call him to direct the next judge.

There's hope because the comic continues to sell, so it means the central concept can work. Just needs the right treatment.

Either him or Ron Perlman.
roughrider
Looks don't matter so much, because if they are true to the character, he doesn't take off the helmet & visor. They screwed that up early with the Stallone version, feeling their expensive movie star needs to show his face often. The voice and build matter more.
^And yeah, Ron Perlman is another good idea. He's spent most of his career in heavy makeup - a helmet & visor won't trouble him.

I loved both the comics and i thought the stallone movie was entertaining. i'm probably the only one...
looking forward to this, though. wonder if we'll see judge death...

We don't see Dredd's full face. His chin is good enough.
But, despite a long career, he's never been the lead in anything. So they wouldn't cast him because he's not high profile enough.
-Pr-
Clancy Brown would be good. His voice is great, and he's done action before (though it was a while back)

"I knew you were going to say that".
How about they keep is mask on this time or use censor bars on the top of his head? I still feel like Stallone damaged this franchise enough to where people won't see this. I mean, what do most movie goers know about Judge Dredd other than a bad movie and an awesome SNES game?

Good. Stay on the smaller scale; working in South Africa may help them stretch their budget further, like District 9 did.
If Sly Stallone & Danny Cannon even show up to visit...pull out the lawgiver!

Judging by that article (no pun intended), it sounds potentially good. Hopefully they stick to what they're saying. I'm at least feeling more positive about the project.

god.. 3d? i hate 3d live action movies.. i think just because this is 3d, its gonna suck.. but thats just my general disdain about 3d movies.. hopefully it'll turn out good though.. i liked stallone's dredd back then.. way back then.. this movie deserves more of a remake/reboot than spiderman does.. way more..

They should hand this to Neil Marshall and get Pat Mills in for the screenplay.

I'll wait for a wider shot, see how the whole suit looks.
Stallone did look good and accurate in his Judge Dredd costume; it was just so much of the rest of the movie that was wrong.

I'm liking that look for Dredd. First time I saw it I thought the helmet was too big also but you could say that Stallone's by contrast looked too tight to his head. The body armour reminds me slightly of the Fifth Element' s police uniforms: perhaps thats what he wears on raids or heavy confrontation and not necessarily all the time.
The lawgiver looks impressive, the design from the comics is cool but that looks like its packing heavy ammo. Need to see more of the costume it to be sure but first impressions look good.

Looks kind of low tech, like they're going for a Robocop look for the film.
Where's the look that we saw in Jock's conceptual art for the film?
Kazenji
Danny Boyle's production company better not be running low on money.

Well, we know they announced a $45 million budget for the film, which is low. But they're making it in South Africa with many of the people who worked on District 9 - who made that $30 million dollar film look like it cost over $100 million. And they are shooting it in 3D. So...
The money better look like it's there, on the screen.

It's hard to say for the moment though because those pictures are taken out of context. In the movie for example the the cars may have some futuristic gadgets, like retractable armour or hover capability.
I think the most important thing vehicle-wise would be what the Lawmaster motorcycles are going to look like, I can't imagine Dredd getting out of a car.

I'm excited to see this. I enjoyed the original Stallone version, and I think they can take this somewhere.
You're totally right, that helmet looks too large... and outfit for that matter.

I got to say I'm not liking that Lawmaster design. I mean, I'm no engineer or bike enthusiast but can that thing actually turn?
Looks like someone's put their kid on an adult's bike.
My hopes for this film have just took a nosedive.

It looks too large on Karl Urban's head. His neck looks skinny in it.
We won't know until it comes out, so no choice but to be hopeful until then...
It's too bad about the Stallone version of Judge Dredd. They got so many design details right, and Sly's casting worked. It's was just the wrong story and wrong tone that helped ruin it.

They're not really scraping the barrel for Dredd, he is well known well more in the UK then America.

I actually like Karl Urban, so it's all good. I'll probably see it anyway! I actually seem to remember semi-enjoying the Stallone version, on some level. Though, it's been a LONG time since I've seen it.

Patient_Leech
Alright, so I watched the Stallone Judge Dredd again with some friends. It's terrible, yet entertaining.
The production design is pretty f**king amazing, though. And I guess it should be with a $90 million budget!! I think that's what I liked about it the first time I saw it, it's pretty fun to look at, but it's a pretty crappy movie. I also like that the bad guy's robot buddy is actually animatronic instead of CGI.
I recommend giving it another look if you're the slightest bit curious. It's fun to make fun of... especially Rob Shneider, he is awful.. haha
Kazenji
Yeah with that first one that they did, They got the look of Mega City One and all that sort of thing to do with Dredd right but they also decided to have some comedy in it with Rob Schneider

Well, hearing Urban talk about it has me slightly more intrigued by this. But I still love the Stallone movie!! Haha.. for it's campiness and production design (damn!).

For that Stallone movie personally i think they nailed the look of Mega City One for that adaptation.

Aye. It did have positives. I think the biggest problem in it was Dredd himself.

The release dates are so close, it's likely just a coincidence that the central plots are similar. Dredd fans on IMDB are convinced, however, the makers of TR:R purposely tried to push their film into theaters first to upstage Dredd, which got shot before TR:R in late 2010.

Simply put - honour has been restored to Dredd.
It's an honest, grimly satisfying thriller; it's style evokes early John Carpenter in it's relentlessness.
