When the Spectre was forced to use the ALE by Cain, it not only caused him pain, it "Unmade creation and remade the world in Darkseid's name." You can see the world turning into a new Apokolips and reality warping. Maybe those cracks about the ALE being the power source for 5D imps wasn't just a joke........

Darkseid would need to be somewhat merged with The Source (most powerful DS ever) as at the end of DTNG for a stalemate and even then it ended when The Source disconnected DS from himself once it knew all of DS's plans. Thanos takes it
