Potential conflict was brewing last night in the South China Sea after President Obama dispatched heavily armed American destroyers to the scene of a naval standoff between the US and China at the weekend.

Mr Obama?s decision to send an armed escort for US surveillance ships in the area follows the aggressive and co-ordinated manoeuvres of five Chinese boats on Sunday. They harassed and nearly collided with an unarmed American vessel.

Washington accused the Chinese ships of moving directly in front of the US Navy surveillance ship Impeccable, forcing its crew to take emergency action, and to deploy a high-pressure water hose to deter the Chinese ships. Formal protests were lodged with Beijing after the incident.

On a day that Mr Obama and his senior officials met the Chinese Foreign Minister, Yang Jiechi, in Washington, Beijing showed no sign of backing down. Its military chiefs accused the unarmed US Navy ship of being on a spying mission.

Well, this could turn out to be Obama's big test.

That is just escalation of problem. Chinese were wrong to mess about American soldiers since people on ships had to take emergency action - which in itself could have caused accident.

However, this reaction by Obama is just unhelpful, aggressive and could prove dangerous considering Chinese are buying off America debt.

Public condemnation by Obama, or a complaint to Chinese authorities would have been sufficient. Chinese authorities would have dealt with this in the manner that is appropriate.

Sending heavily armed ships in South China sea is not very diplomatic or mature. And Obama's inability to be diplomatic and not hot headed in the most crucial of moments may cost Americans.
Responsible leaders do all is necessary to reduce possibilities of harm to the country and people they lead.

Like, ok, so he might be right in the eyes of the UN and international law, but given the chinese obviously don't care about those things... Blah, where is Orwell when you need him.

During the campaign and beginning of the $ crisis he showed his ability to remain levelheaded; he is now trying to prove to the country (and world) that he can stand up to other nations. This was most likely motivated more by domestic politics than by relations with the Chinese.

Its hilarious for anyone in the USA to invoke international law when USA has repetedly broke it, has ignored UNSC and continues to ignore it.
American administration should be ashamed to utter words UN, or international law. Particulary those who have been involved in administration for the past 30 years.

I agree. I think he is trying to show that he can cope, and considering what he has inherited...
I watch CNN and he is constantly under fire for various domestic reasons.

My personal opinion is that he shouldn't have done that. However, from the perspective of Obama, I am sure if he had acted in proper manner he would have come under attack for ''kneeling'' to Chinese.
Its a lose-lose. But that is the curse of being US president...amongst other things.

There are probably more cost effective and less invasive ways of collecting "data" than what was being done. I shouldn't say, "probably" because there are. I'm referring to Satellites and the like. Those may sound expensive, short term, because they are. But, long term, they actually cost less and are more effective concerning the intended target of evaluation. (Depending on the evaluation goals.)

This could also function more diplomatically.

However. I don't think we need to be doing too much spying to begin with. I mean...why? Are we that scurd?

I would rather spend that money on domestic problems.
