Seriously though, classic versions and we assume peak. Therefore it's not only plausible but inevitable that Thor could and would use that tactic, which essentially makes it a 2-on-1. And yes, Superman would be trying to hinder it, but Thor wouldn't go down as quickly as a powerless Juggs, and he also wouldn't be able to stop the hammer once it is thrown.

That was when the writer tied his invulnerability to his FF. In a later issue where they fought Thor didn't try that tactic and he had plenty of time. Also Classic Thor could only do that for 60 seconds.
No mental attacks or BFR means Cain can't be stopped here.

He could only do it for 60 seconds because separating from his hammer that long meant he would inevitably turn back into Jake. There's nothing stopping him from repeating the process.
