Best setting in a horror movie?

So then peeps. What's the best place you've seen a horror movie set in?

I guess the tension levels could be dependant on what you're afraid of on a personal level. Some people are afraid of horrors set in realistic and relatable surroundings...camping in the woods ala Blair Witch...Leafy suburb ala Halloween.

Personally, for me, it was the Danvers state lunatic asylum from "Session 9" that creeped me out more than anything else. The long curved tunnels and the paint flaking off the walls with rusty wheelchairs laying around. It was a truly inspired choice of locale.

I like the abandoned bunkers in Outpost and The Bunker. Shame the execution of those films wasn't the best.

MildPossession
I was going to mention Session 9, definitely Psychiatric Hospitals for me when it comes to Horror film settings.

Look at the West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum in Yorkshire, I think the buildings are down now unfortunately, but the photos they have of the place are amazing, they filmed Asylum(not Horror) in the actual Hospital. It had a new name later but I can't remember it right now, but stuff still comes up using the original collective name.

Here in Britain anyway, they tend to knock all these beautiful buildings down, they are gradually knocking down the old one down the road from me that was right opposite my High School, could see it from the class windows, shame. sad

The one where they set Session 9 is beautiful too:

Röland
The Thing: Antarctica, totally isolated and nowhere to run.

deathbycorn
Wolf Creek and movies set on islands like The Wicker Man and Dagon etc

One of the reasons i'm looking forward to Shutter Island...even if it's not technically a horror.

MildPossession
Shutter Island also has the Psychiatric Hospital setting. smile

As a matter of interest, has any of you seen the 2007 film "Catacombs" set in the Paris catacombs? If so, was it any good?

I like the idea of a horror being set there and I have an interest in the place.

It's also a great location for a horror.

http://www.boreme.com/boreme/funny-2007/lost-in-catacombs-p1.php

That'll give you an idea of how freaky a place it can be if you go off the tourist guides and into the unmapped deep areas of the catacombs.

MildPossession
It's complete rubbish, they had a wonderful set as well, failed miserably putting it to use. Think they filmed a scene from the French series Engrenages in part of the catacombs, if I remember right.

jaden101
I'll be giving that one a miss then....Hahaha.

That ACDC Chick

Try not to be generic though. Name specific places from specific films that were used in horrors...Like the above mentioned Danvers

Feel free to also add ones you'd like to see used. Something near your home for example.

For me, I think Dunnottar castle would be an amazing location.

Even my old school is quite an imposing place (or it was before it got destroyed by fire and rebuilt)

The fire pretty much totalled the school completely except the east wing as you can see on this pic.

It's basically the shell of the old building bolted on to a brand new interior now.

Fettes college in Edinburgh is similar and would also make a cool location

The Nuul
The caves in Decent was creepy.

Selphie
Day of the Dead's army bunker scares me a bit. White walls everywhere, underground, winding hallways, etc.

28 Day's Later's locations are all pretty creepy too. A totally desolate city, scary army mansion, etc

Agreed with the Descent, I'll never want to enter a cave now

MildPossession
That is a gorgeous college in Edinburgh!! I adore architecture like that.

BackFire
Personally for me to find a setting scary I need to be able to imagine myself being there, it needs to be a place that I think I could find myself in, so thus I'm always fond of suburban settings or city settings.

Dr. Leg Kick
I liked the settings from Silent Hill. That's one of the reasons why I thought so highly of the film.

MildPossession
I loved the streets with ash falling everywhere in that film, wonderfully creepy.

jaden101
Yeah they did a great job in silent hill of recreating the look of the games. I wasn't 100% approving of the story though but the atmosphere was nigh on perfect except for the hotel (I just didn't think it fitted)

Kris Blaze
I like the setting in abandoned towns and frozen wastelands.

Parmaniac
anyone remember the subway from creep? It also had some kind of hospital in it pretty ****ed up, imagine a deformed freak tearing apart people with old rusty instruments while 5m beneath hundres of people going to work and worrying about the smell there. laughing

EDIT: I also found the Castle of Castlefreak REALLY Creepy

MildPossession
The setting for Creep was good, shame about the rest of the film, thought it was quite rubbish.

hm yeah but have you looked at the DVD extras? Theres a scene almost impossible to describe it it seems that the Creep is tearing through a human body or something and is stitching a teddy bear into a wound or something

MildPossession
There were no extras on the rental dvd I got, but I don't think it will add much to make me think again about Creep.

hm strange I had it rent and it was there, hm nevermind, but this scene was really something outstanding I never seen anything before I'll check Youtube if I find the scene I'll post the link here smile

MildPossession
Yeah a lot of my rentals here in Britain don't seem to have many extras apart from trailers and commentary. Will check out the video if you find it.

If you like Christopher Smith films(Creep) then he has a new one out soon in October called Triangle.

CATMANEXE
the Monroeville Mall from Dawn Of The Dead and of course
Camp NoBeBoSco from Friday The 13th.

Went to see this tonight...Odd film. Nice premise but no executed particularly well.

wicker_man
Anywhere which you'd think is safe and you'd have gone to in times of an emergency.
Although, one of my favourite places in a horror movie has to be on a boat in the middle of the ocean a la Jaws.

Kris Blaze
A prison could be good.

Can anybody recollect any horror movies set in prisons?

Alien 3

MildPossession
Malefique is one set in a prison

Gothika(well a psychiatric hospital for the criminally insane)

Dante 09(Space prison, Sci-Fi/Horror)

Could probably find a lot of them during the 60s/70s prison exploitation films era, those silly Ilsa Nazi films for example.

I can't even find Dante 09 on the internet. Gothika was fairly disappointing, I'll check out Malefique.

jaden101
Shutter Island looks promising for a prison/mental institution based horror/thriller.

Session 9 is outstanding for the same type of location.

MildPossession
I didn't think much of Dante 09, not missing out on much. Not a prison film, but another French sci-fi/horror worth seeing(mostly sci-fi) is a film called Eden Log if you haven't seen it, there is a topic on the film somewhere in this section.

That does look like a promising film, the book is excellent, so hope it follows it close.

The Alien films are Sci-Fi/Horror.

Kris Blaze
I saw Eden Log, decent enough.

Blinky
Secluded ancient European castles.

Like the castles in Bram Stokers Dracula, both versions of Nosferatu.
